On the basis of pre-season/the current squad, where will we finish this season?

If our strikers can score loads

No evidence of that yet, so top half

If the varane deal CTN, are we going for Hayden? Not sure which is the cheaper option. But Hayden it would seem a “safer” option as he did well for us, loved being here but his current contract and wage might be the stumbling block, and his age - not a develop and sell prospect?

We could use some experience and familiarity with the league, Hayden will hit the ground running

Captain Dunne
at 12:06 21 Jul 2024

Chair was captain in Girona for the Santa Coloma and FC L’Escala friendlies

Dunne might be vice captain or 2nd captain so in chair’s absence he steps in

I think Cook will be an ideal choice as captain but most clubs I would imagine have 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th captains as would national teams

To further add to this, Gallen, Crouch, Austin, Wells, Sir Les are fundamentally strikers

I don’t think Sinclair can be classified as a striker. His skill sets indicated otherwise. The most lacking are goal scoring instinct, positioning and the ability to head the ball.

Is he a false 9, a decoy forward, or just a quarter hour bully?

Also, I am pretty sure the scouts at Bristol City probably have a few forward position they think Armstrong can fit right in and develop him for. But defo not as a central striker IMO

Players leaving
at 08:06 21 Jul 2024

Nil games for Everton in 4 years and now no games for Nottingham Forest for 2 years after his transfer

Amazing in 6 years Josh Bowler never made a single appearance for the senior squad of his parent clubs, not even in “minor” competition like the league cup.

How is this a good career move in the sense of personal development and improvement for the player himself?

I bet Everton never made any profit on Bowler and now being hoarded in the Forest without seeing the trees.

Lower league clubs are constantly losing their young players through such channels but you could say they are probably not good enough (for EPL) in the first place.

What did Ange Postecoglou say of his compatriot our own Aussie Daniel Bennie?

Very positive that Alfie Tuck and Bennie got good minutes in the preseason friendlies

Would you send them including Kolli out on loan this season to develop or have them around the first team as squad players?

One important point to note is that this friendly against a top 6 premier league team, Marti used 6 development players or u-21s; Morrison, Tuck (u 18?), Talla, Bennie, Kolli, Lloyd, and at least 5 of them were on the pitch in the last 20 minutes of the game

In our last preseason friendly, against Oxford United, we could count Gubbins from the dev squad, with Richards and Kelman, who were basically squad players

We have certainly pushed forward a long way since then.

Now now guys let’s not get carried away by a few minutes of goal clips to start saying you could keep goal for a Swiss super league team and than those clubs have non existent defending that allowed opposition forwards to bag a sack full of goals.

If you would have seen a clip of Armstrong goals and assists for QPR (not many by the way), would teams like Bristol City actually would have bought him? The answer is of course no. Clubs now used a wide range of tools to acquire players.

Same, if FC Lugano fans watched Armstrong goals clips, they would have thought he wasn’t any good in the goal department and surely would not be an ideal replacement for the departing Celar.

You cannot guarantee every transfer acquisition is a success, I get that. Even top teams spending tens of millions like Man city, Man U or Chelsea have one successful transfer for every failure.

I think Marti sees, like we do, young, pace, raw strength, power, athleticism, emotive enthusiasm, monster of a threat to defence

But to coach him in offside runs, shooting at goal, tactical play, goal instincts, big match temperament is not going to be a season or two thing. It comes with intense coaching, willingness to learn and experience

Which upon his departure there isn’t time for that, and that refusing to sign an extension or renew with a year left on his current contract make all what Marti sees in him completely moot and redundant

Sad to see him leaving if only because he is a young player we could develop

And this is exactly the situation before where club tried to keep players up to a point they ran down their contracts and club got nothing and fans got incensed

No longer

Well done my club

He had just finished with Slovenia a few weeks ago so he is still conditioned and would get up to speed quickly for pre-season so this is fantastic

Is there a reason why a “developing player club” like Bristol City never get into the EPL promise land?

Armstrong as he is would never get into Leicester, Ipswich or Southampton promotion squads last season or would be just a bit part role from the bench. There is a reason why Bristol City are known as what they are and stay where they are in the championship

The deal is fantastic for QPR

Mismanaged or not, we couldn’t send him on loan to L1 or L2 last season as the first team needs the utmost priority

Who could tell even if we did would he flourish?

So if Bristol City got him to improve would they send him instantly to the lower leagues to improve and gain experience? Doubt so, as Bristol is a “developing club” and you don’t develop players yourself by sending them away to improve.

However you look at it, it is a win win situation for both our club and Armstrong

If he became the player we thought he would be at City and get a 50 million move to the EPL, we will have our sweet 25% selling on

If he just went into the sunset, well, we wouldn’t get our add-ons but we have had our sweet and ate it so all good

If he became a “Manning” or a “BOS” who like his last year at QPR refusing a renewal, we wouldn’t get the sell on but neither would Bristol and they get another “Conway” in their hands that might go for free

Long story short - excellent business by QPR and well done the player too

England manager should be English

Big footballing nations should have their own coaching the national teams

Spain
Brazil
Argentina
Germany
Italy
France

The England coach should develop an English way of play and the coach should ideally be English

Even if I don’t make much sense you must know what I mean

Isn’t 40 million reported for 18 yo Archie Gray of championship club Leeds by Spurs with “potential” being one of the valuation factor?

So 2.5 million for a 21 yo striker playing for a championship club and an u-21 national team with “potential to grow” doesn’t seem far fetch innit?

You may not agree but if it is true I wouldn’t argue too much, take the money and send the player by express post thank you very much

Time to move on.

There is no doubt our offer wasn’t attractive to him, but more of a manifestation of what is now of a player that is injury prone and not really interested.

That he got AN offer and jumped at it tells us a lot

Not other interested party saw the value that he and his agent/dad saw in him tells the whole story on the other side of QPR

Transfer rumours 2024

Not sure if Wolves would get their targets right though

They did try to lure Beale after a good run of form that saw QPR topping the table

But then again they did unwittingly avoided a lemon under certain circumstances orchestrated by Beale himself

Perhaps because he is out of contract and no longer a QPR player he could not travel to the camp in Girona?

Appreciate he is trying to negotiate the best deal with the club

Was Leon Balogun still under contract with us when he travelled to Austria? Recalled he was off sharpish during the camp once Beale came calling…this is what wiki says : “He returned to Rangers on 12 July 2023, a year after departing from the club as a free agent.” So technically he was an out of contract player that travelled with the team (on Ainsworth invitation - with a view for a new deal?)

If so, wonder why Willock couldn’t do the same (if he has the heart to stay with us), that being
- keep himself physically ready at the start of preseason- even it is may not be with us
- keep himself in sync with marti, the coaching team and his team mates with tactics, team play etc whilst he is negotiating with the club

Maybe the club wouldn’t allow a non contracted player to join the camp, unlike last season (with Balogun for example)

Or maybe Willock thinks it is not his priority or in his interest to do so (if given the opportunity to join the team camp) and would rather spend (extra) time in family vacation

Whatever the case, however one speculates, it is not going well with the fans - his commitment, his dedication to the club or unto the best interest of himself for himself, if it is not already is.

Would the coaching team or the club wants a player like this? It is preseason already, he got the whole post season to craft a contract with the club and this is still hanging in the air?
