Improved train service for the Cardiff area on 14:04 - Jun 8 by felixstowe_jack | Yes correct the Welsh government and Tfw are not interested in any investment outside Cardiff. New Station around Swansea should be a priority and a half hourly service to all stations like Llansamlet, Skewen, Briton Ferry, Baglan and Pyle would ease road congestion. |
The stations already exist and are not well used. There's no reason to go into the City when we can go to Cardiff shopping instead

Improved train service for the Cardiff area on 08:54 - Jun 8 by Boundy | Therein is the problem of why s Wales will only ever prosper in one area the s East, creating the wealth in one are by creating the jobs there and in doing so allows Cardiff to grow even bigger whilst the rest stagnate. Over 80% of new jobs created in s Wales is in Cardiff , what a statistic . The exodus to Cardiff each working day from Swansea and its environs is palpable and because of this and in doing so is denying the city's growth. Why not create the work where people live instead of expecting them to travel at least 2.5/3 hours a day from say Bryncethin ( as its stands atm ). The best we can hope for is a mono rail to Amazon Warehouse and the University ( of which the students are more that adequately served .) More should be done for s West Wales instead of this drive to making Cardiff bigger .IMO of course. |
Re SW Wales I read about a possible crumb of comfort - not sure if this is definitely going ahead. "Grand Union is proposing to launch its new service between Carmarthen and London as soon as it is able to secure the necessary rolling stock. The planned start of 2025 is not currently achievable with the long lead times on new build trains, and Grand Union is exploring various options to deliver this important service as soon possible. A new parkway station is proposed to be built at Parc Felindre close to Junction 46 of the M4 motorway, but initial services will call at Gowerton and bypass Swansea thereby reducing journey times from further west to Cardiff and London by around 20 minutes." http://www.granduniontrains.co.uk/

But the problem that I can see is that the new line will bypass the City and therefore the Pembroke/.Carmarthen passengers will potentially stop at Cardiff instead of Swansea to do their shopping

Swansea has alway been a terminus station. There is no through track. Shoppers just need one change to visit Swansea alighting at the new Parkway station. This is not likely to put off too many people,

Wouldn't the existing services still be in place to allow shopping trips from Carmarthen to Swansea? The way I saw things is that Grand Union Trains is an add on that improves connectivity from South West Wales to points further east.

Currently you can get trains from West Wales to Cardiff bypassing Swansea. The Carmarthen to Port Talbot stretch it only stops at Llanelli when it bypasses Swansea. Strangely you only save 5-8 minutes because the track is poor and has restricted speed limits.

I used to think Swansea was the end of the line as they was nothing of any consequence west of it. It why High St had buffers Swansea should be the focal point for south west Wales,a not insignificant area.

No mention of GWR there who carry far more passengers to Swansea than TFW, who are mostly rural lines who have been hit hard by Cardiff commuters working from home since the pandemic.

Well logically cj you'd only see people using it if you just happened to be passing just before a train arrives for the passengers to get on. If that's once an hour for example how likely is that. Not your best argument.
