Striker Snapped Up Early
U's bring in Conor Wilkinson

"The striker has been signed from Scottish Premiership side Motherwell for an undisclosed fee, having been with the Steelmen for the past six months.

Wilkinson started his career at Millwall as a fifteen year old, but was signed by fellow Championship side Bolton Wanderers three years later.

After four years with Bolton, he spent two years at Gillingham, Orient and Walsall before heading north of the border last summer.

The twenty eight year old, who celebrates his birthday later this month, is expected to go striaght into the U's squad for the game at Swindon, subject to all the usual paperwork ratifications."

Sammie Szmodics
at 00:54 1 Dec 2023

Sammie Szmodics celebrated signing a new contract by helping Blackburn Rovers to victory against a resilient Birmingham City in an end-to-end Championship fixture at Ewood Park.

The Championship's leading scorer, who on Tuesday committed his future to Rovers until the end of the 2025-26 season, took his tally this season to 13 goals with a double strike during a white-hot second half in the Lancashire cold.

And in case, like me, who may have missed this on YouTube last year - take a listen to Frank Nouble and Mika Mandron interviewing "Mr Essex, Mr Colchester" in the words of Mandron, or "the special one, the chosen one" in the words of Nouble!

Nice mention and quotes from former U Robbie Reinelt whose goal kept Brighton in the Football League in the 96/97 season:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65101524

Had he have stayed at Colchester, could could have scored an important penalty at Wembley instead of Karl Duguid missing one. The whole story could have been different.

All the best for Sunday GOSBTS

Description
A bespoke stadium clock to be installed in the North Stand, a nod to the Clock End at Layer Road.

Location: North Stand

Proposal Target: 5k

2) Billboard Advert

Description
A bespoke billboard advert promoting the U’s matches and prices for next season in a high traffic area e.g. the train station.

A larger budget will allow the advert to run for as long as possible to maximise its impact.

The advert should be clear and simple in order to show clearly how cheap it is to come and watch the U's.

Proposal target: 3k

Football & climate: Which EFL clubs are the most sustainable?
at 20:33 29 Mar 2023

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/65085346

Safe to say we are not in the top 20 and like our position in the whole of the football league I wouldn't be surprised if we were 4th bottom!

Remember when the stadium was being built/planned the talk around sustainable travel with discounts in the car park for 4 or more travelers and of the course the infamous shuttle buses (sorry to bring them up again Noah!). Anyone you know cycle to the matches?

Anyone know what Col U are doing about single use plastic reduction, waste efficiency, clean energy etc???

Why is sport and in this case football way behind in the battle for a better climate? They seem to want to be the World leaders in everything else!

Michael Folivi
at 18:37 20 Feb 2023

This one's for Durham............

Former Colchester United striker Michael Folivi has joined Chelmsford

The 24-year-old, who scored six goals in 13 starts for the U's in the 2020-21 season, could make his Clarets debut in their National League South clash with Tonbridge Angels tonight.

Folivi was due to sign a fresh contract with Colchester in the summer of 2021, having played his part in helping the U’s stay in League Two under Hayden Mullins.

But the former Watford striker suffered an Achilles tendon injury while taking part in off-season fitness work, a day before he was due to sign a new deal at Colchester.

Tommy Smith & The All Whites
at 23:09 31 Mar 2022

Tommy Smith played the full 90 minutes in the All Whites 5-0 demolition of Solomon Islands to qualify for the inter-confederation play-offs against 4th placed in the CONCACAF qualifying Third Round, Costa Rica!

The play-off is scheduled to be played as a single match in Qatar on 13 or 14 June 2022.

I saw this interesting post on the Official Col U messageboard:
"Interesting fact about Tommy Smith also. The reason he is able to play for New Zealand, despite being born in Macclesfield, and having no parents or grandparents native to there, he grew up for a few years there, so he holds duel nationality with the UK & New Zealand."

So, I looked him up on that well trusted site of Wikipedia and low and behold the above is true, but also "he has also represented England at U-17 and U-18 level. Smith played in the 2007 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Korea during September 2007 despite not playing a part in England's qualification for the tournament." "He also went on play every minute of New Zealand's World Cup campaign, which achieved a historic three points at the tournament." (the only team to go unbeaten in the tournament )

Although Costa Rica are ranked #31 in the current FIFA World Ranking and New Zealand #101, there is great optimism over here that we can qualify. Especially now that the play-off is a one off match in Qatar where the All Whites have been playing for the last couple of weeks and even before that they have played a few friendlies in UAE & Bahrain. Previous inter-confederation play-offs against Peru (2018) & Mexico (2014) did not go so well especially away from home with the big, partisan crowds in central and South America!

Fingers crossed for an All Whites win. Be good to have 2 teams to support in the World Cup (3 if Wales qualify - gotta keep the ol' man happy )

Would Tommy Smith be the first contracted Colchester United player to play in a World Cup?

Up the Kiwi U's!

Reading: Championship club deducted six points for breaking EFL financial rules
at 18:54 17 Nov 2021

Reading have been deducted six points by the English Football League for breaching financial rules.

The EFL determined the Royals lost £57.8m between 2017 and 2021 - the EFL's limit for that period is £39m.

A further six-point deduction is suspended until the end of next season, provided they comply with a business plan which includes player spending.

Reading drop from 16th to 19th in the Championship, on 16 points, four clear of the relegation places.

The Berkshire club have been under a transfer embargo since the summer as a result of their breach of profitability and sustainability rules.

Reading are the second Championship side in as many days to have a points deduction imposed on them after Derby were docked a further nine points for breaches of EFL accounting rules, taking their overall deductions this season to 21 points.

Any more teams heading for administration? Do we still want a new chairman?
