I would be interested to know if the following football programme is the only survivor from Saturday, 13th August, 1960.

It was left in the Referee's changing room at Layer Road and is stamped 'COMPLIMENTARY'.

Maybe there are a few others floating around.

This is for a TRIAL MATCH and is The Blue and Whites versus The Reds.

Blue and Whites

1. Ames
2. Laidlaw
3. Fowler
4. Parker
5. Milligan
6. Hammond
7. Williams
8. Hill
9. Langman
10. King
11. Wright ( P ).

Reds

1. Wright ( J )
2. Marshall
3. Rumney
4. Millar
5. Woods
6. Hunt ( RM )
7. Blake
8. McLeod
9. Hunt ( RR )
19. Miller
11. Howe

I had quite a few connections to those named above..

Four of the Blue and Whites appeared in 'Made in Colchester', ( Derek Parker, Cyril Hammond, Peter Wright and Martyn King ).

Percy Ames lived near by.

Ronnie Hunt was my physio for several seasons.

Edgar Rumney was a formidable cricket opponent.

Sammy McLeod was a good friend to my Dad.

Bobby Hunt is a good friend to me and also appeared in 'Made in Colchester'. Bobby and l played cricket together and he made me cry laughing during play on several occasions!

I have spent a few hours in the loft so possibly more to follow.

Football programme.

Single sheet printed on both sides in blue.

Saturday, October 6th, 1962

Layer Road Ground, Colchester

FOOTBALL COMBINATION

Colchester United Reserves

3. Miller
4. Harris

10. Wright
11. Mildenhall

This match in 1962 kicked off at 3.15pm along with all the other first team and reserve fixtures back then.

Thousands of people used to work on Saturday mornings in Colchester at the time in factories and hospitals and this would have been replicated across the country.

There was only 10 minutes allocated for the half time interval.

5. Jefferson
6. Smith ( Peter )

Something from a few years ago.

I had purchased some art at auction by Peter Collins.

His speciality was female nudes and there were around 26,000 drawings in about 120 lots.

I bought about 8 lots which was around 1,800 drawings.

Mark Stacey ( Flog It etc ) who was living in Brightlingsea at the time purchased a good selection of oil paintings and there were about 20 of us buying.

Anyway, a few years after the sale l had a visitor up from Bristol who was possibly the first person ever to buy anything by Banksy. He bought doors and shutters that Banksy had stenciled and tagged in Bristol.

This was around the early to mid nineties.

Out of respect to him l can't divulge who he sold them to but there are political connections at the highest level.

Anyway, he bought a selection of the drawings l had and then we entered into a wider conversation.

He was selling a bit of dope around London while he was between jobs and was supplying one particular female who always fascinated me.

He became quite involved with her over a long period of time and even to this day is loyal and discreet.

The female was Christine Keeler.

I asked him quite a few questions about their relationship, some he answered freely, but discretion prevailed on certain issues ( non sexual ).

I wanted to write about some of what he told me but he rightly wanted to protect Miss Keeler's son.

One thing l can share though is that Christine Keeler had kept all the newspapers relating to the Profumo Affair in a box or suitcase under her bed.

She also had a tattered copy of the image of her on the chair.

I am working on a piece which is set in the time of the Profumo case but l have centred it around Doctor Stephen Ward and another female who was part of the scene back in 1962.

This has been prompted by contact l have had over the past few days with Sworders Auctions who have work by Banksy and Doctor Stephen Ward in their sale that starts tomorrow morning.

The piece l am writing is in draft form and I'll put it up in the next day or so.

Stephen Ward was made a scapegoat by the British establishment and took his own life as a result of it.

He was a talented artist and Keeler was loyal to his memory right up until her final moments.

When l started watching football many years ago the midweek matches actually took place on a Monday evening with a 7.15 kick off.

It would be quite normal for the same eleven players who had represented the club on a Saturday ( for a full 90 minutes ) to play on the Monday evening - injuries and form permitting.

One such example was in 1971 when Colchester United played flat out in a pulsating 4th Round F.A. Cup tie at Rochdale on the Saturday afternoon that ended in a thrilling 3 - 3 draw.

I bet those players couldn't wait to get back on the pitch for the replay at Layer Road on the Monday evening ( which by then would have been a 7.30 kick off ).....it was Colchester United 5 Rochdale 0.

Those players under Dick Graham would have been more than capable of playing on the Tuesday night too should there have been a match.

When l hear of players being rested after an hour or so because they have a match on the Tuesday l can only conclude that they are not fit enough to be professional footballers.

Multiple substitutions have ruined the game for me. I don't want to see three different teams playing against one another for 90 minutes plus another 10 - partly to allow for the changes.

Additionally l wonder if the lower divisions should be regionalised as they once were. Eight hour journeys are xxxxxxx ridiculous with the state of the motorways and A roads.

I would like to see three named substitutes only. This would reduce squad sizes and save the clubs much needed revenue. If the leagues were regionalised this too would make a huge saving.

The recent Colchester United business model is utterly unsustainable. I doubt it will continue much longer.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION re. Vehicles on the road.

I just looked up some data on this and road traffic has tripled since the early seventies from around 13.5 million to 41 million.

I took the dog out for 25 minutes tonight and counted over 60 Deliveroo / Just Eat etc type riders / cyclists around the East Hill / Town Centre / North Hill and Cowdray Avenue circle we walked.

This began in lockdown and seems to have grown.

The roads are xxxxxx and so are the pavements. Had an e - scooter crash into me on Cowdray Avenue pavement on Thursday morning. The rider did apologise and appeared to be texting while on route to McDonalds.

Nandos has some kind of a hatch in Head Street where the food deliverers collect from which requires some pedestrians to step in the road into traffic flow as the pavement is over flowing with e - contraptions.

GHOSTS OF BERLIN

This piece referenced David Bowie.

David's different coloured eye appearance was due to a blow he received from his close friend George Underwood over a dispute involving a girl.

This occured when they were about 16 years old.

David was treated at Moorfield's Eye Hospital in London and the different colouring is actually an illusion.

George was a close collaborator with David throughout his life and in his capacity as an artist worked on the sleeves for Hunky Dory and Ziggy. The reason for David being in a phone box on the reverse sleeve of Ziggy is that it started to pelt down with rain and Bowie ran into it for shelter.

So many things occur by accident.

Anyway, so after coffee in Fenwick's it was time for some lunch.

My friend said 'l know a good place in the High Street where we can have the full monty for free'.

That sounded like the deal of the day so we took a left a few hundred yards down the road and sure enough enjoyed a special serving ( and special service! ) at absolutely no cost.

Around 3pm we parted ways - l trotted off to Riverside Estate and my associate headed to a location not far from where Colchester United will be playing tomorrow.

Met up with a friend yesterday who has just been released from prison ( six years ).

We went into Fenwicks for coffee.

I ordered two cappuccinos and spotted a couple of speckled sausages rolls in the display unit.

I said 'Do you want one of those?'

He went over to a student at a table and asked to borrow her plastic 12 inch ruler.

He then proceeded to measure the sausage roll through the glass and established it to be two and a half inches long which he estimated to be two bites.

It was £4.70.

He said 'We'll leave that, I've got a better idea'

To be continued.

Bit of an update on this ....it is my assumption that the litho plates for the print run ( that was given a red light by The Bank of England ) would have been collected for safe keeping by Banksy. Or possibly destroyed with him present.

The negs / CMYT separations would have needed to be destroyed as well!

The information at Pest Control Office ( run by Team Banksy ) that relates to the number of signed proof sheets looks correct.

A few samples were cut to size from the proof sheets. Maybe less than twenty?

I searched for one in a friend's loft in Colchester recently - but to no avail.

Just to give an idea of the value of the proof sheets ( signed ), one sold for £94,000 at auction in the UK.

Another for around £60,000.

Banksy and his former business partner had a serious fall out and l always wondered in the issues surrounding the £10 notes had a bearing on that.

There was a Colchester printer re-producing £10 and £20 notes in a large garden shed some years ago - got caught - went to prison.

Some followers on this Forum will be aware - he was involved in local football.

There is a massive British Art Sale coming up at Sworders Auctions next week.

It includes the infamous reproduction of the £10 note that featured Princess Diana in the position previously occupied by The Queen. As far as l know the negs, plates, colour separations etc were produced here in Colchester.

Sworders have attributed the date of production to 2004 - which may well be accurate, but l was given to understand that Banksy and another individual were on site in Barrack Street, Colchester several years later when the project was being discussed with The Royal Mint and The Bank of England who would not have given permission for a print run of 100,000 ( 1 million pounds of counterfeit currency ).

If 100,000 counterfeit £10 notes were distributed at venues such as The Reading Festival and Liverpool Street Station circa 2004 l wonder where they all ended up?

Quickest ever player to represent Colchester United?
at 14:42 23 Sep 2024

Brian was ahead of his time.

He scored several goals by picking the ball up in the left back position, floating a pass about 40 metres forwards ( to himself! ) chasing the ball down and even going round the goalkeeper to score.

He favoured the open end for this incredible feat.

We trained together in the summer pre-season - he was at Chelmsford City by then and he taught me simple methods that he had learned while training with Mansfield Town.

I thought it worth mentioning a very simple training routine that was as follows -

Put two cones down 50 metres apart on flat grass surface. Walk at good pace from first cone to second. Turn, jog back to cone, turn, sprint to cone. Repeat for 10 minutes.

This was so simple. It may not be relevant to today's high octane levels but doing this as part of the basic training twice a day would build the lung capacity that mirrored the activity you might get in match conditions.

Everything is relative but it should be remembered that many of us played football Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning throughout an entire season.

I can remember playing five times a week towards the conclusion of some seasons and into June

One Colchester Sunday League season stretched into July.

I wonder if this may be Owura Edwards?

Others that come to mind include Perry Groves, Brian Hall and Jimmy Oliver.

Either way, Owura Edwards is an exciting player to watch and his pace could be a real asset as Colchester United begin to create a new identity.

'Knee caps' does actually come into the equation with this saga.

A Director of a club currently in Division 2 was set upon twice. The first attack occured in front of his daughter and he was in hospital for two weeks. Baseball bat to the knees. Reported to local police.

Following this attack there was another. This wasn't reported to the police but serious injuries were sustained by the same individual.

These attacks have a paper trail over to Waterford.

They don't have any link to Colchester United or Maldon and Tiptree F.C.

A Colchester resident was employed as a body guard to a board member at the football club concerned.

The situation eventually calmed down.

The Colchester resident l refer to features in several interesting books that have been released in recent years.

Something else l learned while being detailed on this was that the Director of Football at the club concerned would often pick the team and leave the Head Coach to take the flack post match on numerous occasions.

The Director of Football's line up would be written on a paper napkin during a light lunch taken at a casino in Park Lane in London around mid day.

This would be for home matches played about an eighty minute drive going West.

You won't get anything like this through media channels.

A little more about the signing of Yassine En - Neyah.

Yassine is featured at Florence Park in an interview with Colu TV. This was on September 1st, 2023 which was the day the transfer window opened.

It is clear from the interview that he was going to Maldon and Tiptree on loan and in just a matter of a few hours he is being interviewed for Jammers TV.

As l understand it, Yassine had a very short training session on the 1st September and having not played any competitive football for several months ( from what l can make out ) was selected to play in an F. A. Cup qualifier at Biggleswade within 48 hours of his arrival.

The result of that match was Biggleswade 8 Maldon and Tiptree 0, and this against an under strength Biggleswade side.

Just to join a few dots up here, Yassine had played for Waterford F.C. in Ireland while Mitchell Cowling was Chairman of the club.

At the time of Yassine's arrival at Maldon and Tiptree he was able to reacquaint himself with Mitchell Cowling who was General Manager at The Jammers.

So maybe his Colchester United one year deal was orchestrated by Mitchell Cowling - or perhaps not.

If local media are announcing and interviewing the arrival of players then perhaps it should inform the public when players are released. It's fair to say that it usually does but in this instance information appears to have been suppressed.

That is only my take on things and l stand to be corrected.

Either way, Yassine is now back with Truro City in The National League South who can pull in ten times the crowd
that he would expect to play in front of at The Jammers.

Remember him?

Signed on a one year deal to Colchester United ( deal or no deal or sham? ) on 1st September 2023.

Loaned out to Maldon & Tiptree before the ink was dry.

Zero appearances for Colchester United ( from what l can make out ).

And...surprise surprise...he is back at Truro City.

What did this cost the club?

Some football content for my never ending thread is long overdue.

I visited Deia Sakal, daughter of Peter Sakal who died recently and was the owner of GFM who are located in Hawkins Road, Colchester.

Deia is currently running Peter's 12 companies and the purpose of my visit was to explain how 'UK Holiday's in The Sun' came into being and the work we did before this in a hectic 10 year period.

During the conversation the odd football snippet surfaced.

Here is one such example.

Peter set off from his home in Pebmarsh early on a Saturday morning on route to a butchers in Halstead ( l think ). He had his son Ben with him in the child seat. I think Ben must have been about two years old at the time.

As l recall, Peter collected the large beef joint for the Sunday lunch but rather than returning home, and purely on a whim, decided to drive all the way up to Carlisle where Colchester United were playing with a 15.00 hours kick off.

So the beef and Ben had a massive round trip.

Deia liked this story. This was several years before she was born.

On other occasions Peter and l would often take turns in driving to the likes of Hartlepool, Darlington and Wrexham.

At Hartlepool we came across Martin Battle who used to play football for Colne Lodge. He had moved up North from Colchester. We lost 2 - 1.

The Darlington trip was the 2 - 1 victory with Robert Scott wheeling away arm raised as the Colchester fans who occupied an entire side of Feethams raised the roof in celebration.

At Wrexham we led 2 - 1 with minutes to go but lost 2 - 3. Ben Sakal came to this match too.

I remember Deia when she was a week old being held in Debbie Sakal's arms in the kitchen over at Barn House in Pebmarsh.

As l was best man at Peter's wedding there will always be a powerful connection to the family.

I listened to the match in my garage between around 3.30 till 4.30. We were leading 3 - 1 and l thought it was game over.

I went indoors to frame some art ( and made such a mess of it l had to start again ). At about 5.45 l switched on the TV to check out the results on the text.

It said - Morecambe 3 Colchester 3. I had to look again. We were up against 10 men who didn't sound much above National League North level - if that.

It was quite a shock. I was fully expecting Morecambe 1 Colchester 5. That is what it should have been.

I attended the recent Brentford match and enjoyed the evening and the football but as my interest in sport has drained away in recent years sides of Morecambe's calibre are unlikely to entice me back to The Jobserve later in the season.

I like what the Cowley's are about but was rather perplexed when Danny described Division 2 as a 'brilliant league'.

I don't rate the league much and would be looking to win it.

LETTER TO THE DEAD

Dear Sharon

I learned of your passing this morning.

I don't think l ever thanked you for introducing me to the works of Charles Bukowski in 1975.

You were ahead of your time.

And even further ahead of mine.

You were always intellectually stimulating.

Something that l didn't fully appreciate at the time.

I was too busy being involved in sport at the weekends and all these year's on, l cannot believe that l subjected you to 'Match of the Day' on a Saturday night.

You would be reading your books and took no interest in most mainstream television.

You were right.

I was wrong, and l only weened myself off of that xxxx around the nineties.

You got your dream job at the BBC.

The commute from your house share in Lexden Road was short lived.

Your small flat in Maida Vale was a miniature library.

I wish now that l had borrowed some of your books.

But rest assured, it being almost fifty years further on, l am trying to make up for lost time.

I always wondered if you had children.

You would have been a good mother.

Sending a kiss and a hug to your resting place in heaven.

Thanking you for teaching me about the important things in life.

Ray.
