TBF I think we have known this, especially with Cook. Morrison's injury is less specified, which means it is indeterminate how long. We definitely need a CB. If nothing else it frees up Fox to play LB. If we are to get ANYTHING for Paal he needs to be sold now. The same applies to Dunne of course, but I am sure he is going NOWHERE even if we lose him for a free next summer.
With regard to players loaned out- can we recall Larkeche and Kellman?

JCS subbed 60 minutes - returning from injury (Ashby)
If Marti was to do this, he would create the exact same left-footed imbalance that caused us so many problems at Swansea. So I wouldn't recommend this unless the game is out of sight (reach). I agree though that JCS needs minutes (in fact I don't think he should have gone from 0 to 90 to 0 - I would have thrown him on for the last 15 v Norwich), so would put him on either directly for Fox, or for Paal and move Fox to LB.
Really though, it is less about personnel and more about attitude. If we get stuck in like Norwich (x2), Watford at home and Preston, we will be fine and at least a draw. If we go out all insipid and passive then we will get beat - simple as.

TBF he brought them straight back up again and won the Cup in '77. Loved Gordon Hill, was sorry it didn't work at us.

Gosh that brings back memories. Think the natives set fires on the terraces too if memory serves?

For the 'Nourry Out' brigade (I'm ambiguous either way) this loan was a Masterstroke.

There are always going to be 'unexpected' results in this division. The key is to achieve any semblance of consistency and one defeat in 9, with a crippling injury list, indicates that we are doing that. Too many draws of course, which - as Nix points out - is not great for points, but good for morale.
When we were 5 points adrift in November, I genuinely thought we would be out of sight at this point and our position would be irretrievable. We still haven't played well with any manner of consistency, but we have put ourselves in a much stronger position.
We will need some loan reinforcements in January - did Hayden get a club? Maybe not a striker (which sound weird, but with Frey back and Kolli stepping up) unless we can recall Kelman. But definitely a LB and CB. Still lots to be done, but feel we will be okay.

Budgies vs Rs Match Thread

Is not clapping happily what we SUPPORTERS are supposed to do? To be pleased with a battling effort, that was light years better than the Swansea game? To take the positives from a game that before kick off had all the hall-marks of a hammering? To focus on things we did well rather than only looking at what we did poorly?
If not, what's the point?

Two thoughts/queries re Swansea
at 10:51 28 Dec 2024

1 After the Milwall horror show, twelve months ago, Kakay and Dozzell never saw the light of day for the QPR first team again. Given our current injury woes, will Marti be able to able to do anything similar after the Swansea debacle? The likes of Paal and Fox are obvious targets, but like I say, defenders are in short supply in the moment - perhaps it depends on the window?
2 When Paal replaced Ashby at half-time v BC, things improved significantly down the left hand side. This is according to people on here who were at the game. When Ashby replaced Paal at half-time v Swansea, things improved significantly, again according to eye-witnesses. So how does that work? Is it an actual improvement, or is it a perception by those watching based on how dire the first half performances by the incumbent was? Or is it the fact that Chair improved the whole situation down the left when replacing Saito?

This. And it is actually that easy. We will never know if it would have changed the outcome of course. But you don't play your only available right-sided CB at RB. Last year Marti got Swansea spot on with his 4 CB's in defence. Yesterday he got it horribly wrong. Of course the players have to stand up and take ownership of their performance too. The defence was left completely exposed by the midfield and Saito was really poor for the 3rd consecutive game.
We all know that we got away with results against Oxford Cardiff and BC despite poor performances. Yesterday we got what we deserved. Now we need a reaction against Norwich who will be really up for 'revenge'

Brilliant preview Clive. I was particularly taken with your views on live versus screen. You are absolutely right that you only get to watch on screen what the camera allows you to see. Sounds obvious as the camera will always follow the ball, but of course there is so much more going on than that. The Bristol City's keeper's dash to the half-way line is a case in point. On screen we were watching the corner being cleared, while any of ye at the match could see the whole scenario unfolding in front of you.
As for Swansea, it is anybody's guess. Will we start on the front foot or go back into our shell. We will get a clearer picture of the extent of Cook's loss v Norwich more than today I would say. Would hope for a draw but we could just as easily win or lose 2-0

We've been battling relegation all season. They have been top 6. Marti has never managed a top six Championship club. I think we are safe enough.

Was Prestons goal totally against the morals of the game
at 09:28 22 Dec 2024

From a slightly different perspective, I was a little disappointed with Nardi. Perhaps he was a little distracted by seeing his captain go down in obvious agony and had one eye on that. But the shot was low and straight at him. It effectively went through him. For such an excellent shot-stopper it was unlike him to concede such a straightforward shot.

Wouldn't work here though as we pronounce ewe as 'yo' My nephew is an Ag Advisor and spent years working with sheep farmers around Aberdeen. Came home just before Covid and took a fair bit of stick for his 'posh' pronunciation of 'yo'

QPR v Not Preston again Match Thread

I disagree with you slightly Brian. Winning while playing badly is the sign of a good team when it happens OCCASIONALLY. However, since Norwich we have been playing consistently VERY poorly. Like you I am delighted to post the 4 points from Bristol City and Oxford. But to continue to perform like that is not only unsustainable, but unacceptable to the paying supporters, especially those in attendance and even more so when they travel the length and breadth of the country to follow them.
I feel Preston, like Oxford is absolutely a game we should be winning and probably need to win. But if we play as we have in the last couple of games, we will not. If feels like a 0-0 to me.

The flip side of that, Clive is that we have earned points against other relegation teams (Cardiff in particular) whilst playing very poorly. I think (as per your glossary) it probably evens itself out over the course of the season

Just back!
at 23:20 15 Dec 2024

Andersen's form has been disappointing for sure, but hoping that's all it is, loss of form. He was a fine player last season, so doesn't become a bad one overnight. Got off to a flying start against WBA, then got that weird injury and hasn't really been the same since. Shame as with all the injuries and new signings he was actually one of our more experienced Championship players, despite only playing in it for a few months!
Certainly wouldn't be inclined to bin him off - we are a tad to quick too do that imo, not just with him, but several players. In Andersen's case, surely his efforts last season alone has earned him our respect and a little loyalty? We are supporters, I sometimes think the 'support' bit get lost, often when a player needs it most.
