| News Comment | How Many Of The Southampton Squad Will Still Be Here After Transfer Window at 16:41:33
Hard to know what the squad will be at the start of the season, just hope we can clear out the deadwood, keep some of the younger talent and bring in some experience. Loyalty bonus's for a pathetic season performance and going AWOL when we needed them for a relegation battle, really sad to see where this game has gone. |
| News Comment | Stuart Armstrong Seeking Transfer Move To European Club at 14:21:24
SA was a great player for us, my favourite player since he has been at the club, yes people will say he was inconsistent and only showed glimpses, Sadly I would put his time with us as disappointment, but I totally put that down to the mangers and coaching staff which he had to work under, but in fairness you could add another 20 players to that list. Still think he has a few more seasons in the premier league, Brighton would be a great team for him. |
| News Comment | Saints Said To Have Completed Move For Ex Pompey Loanee Keeper at 13:18:25
Bazuna has played 10 times for the Republic of Ireland so at least his has some experience playing at a high level. I've seen him play regularly and is a good keeper, he was man of the match when Ireland lost 2-1 to Portugal, he saved a penalty from Ronaldo in that game. i think this would be a good signing for us. |
| News Comment | Saints Already Planning Central Midfield Transfer Strategy For Next Season at 16:03:03
Good article summing up how we can survive in this league, our owners don't have billions, so selling high / buying low is probably a solid approach. Yes, it’s frustrating and sends out the image of a selling club and lack of ambition. Unfortunately, this world of football is heavily controlled by player & agent power so when players want to move on its hard to win the battle to keep them (Lallana, Lovern, Van Dyke), cash in and reinvest can be the best of a bad situation. Have many players really advanced in their careers after they leave us ? Must disagree on the only blip being back in 2017-18, I would say it was over a 3-4 seasons, what we did learn from this period is how paramount the recruitment will have to be going forward with black box system. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Tottenham Hotspur The Verdict at 04:05:20
Absolutely immense, we all know Spurs get the luck in this fixture, what character to come back after that and win it, a couple years back we would have crumbled. I seriously can’t remember a better performance from a Southampton team. I always felt Ralph was a great manager and was perfect for us, tonight is a reflection of that, we have to remember the constraints he had to work under, hopefully the ownership will back him this summer and who knows what can happen. How could you pick a man of the match after that, everyone was brilliant, just have to mention how fantastic S Armstrong is, what a bargain, he has to be the first name on the team sheet. So glad we kept Moi and hope we offer him a new contract. Doesn’t look like it Højbjerg has progressed since he left us, just another name added to the grass and greener list. It was brilliant bringing on Theo at the end to wind up the Spurs fans. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Crystal Palace The Preview at 17:10:24
Have to disagree with two things in this article 1. A central pairing of Jan Bednarek & Mo Salisu is not strong, Bednarek was been poor for a long time, the Arsenal game is evident of that, Salisu & Lyanco have to be our partnership going forward with Small and Simeu making the breakthrough this or next season. 2. There is no such thing as a free hit, it creates a defeatist mentality. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Leeds United The Verdict at 14:07:33
Very good performance, every player put in a shift to get our first win of the season, added bonuses were a clean sheet, the return of Stuart Armstrong, not giving points to a bottom half team. Yes, i have been critical of Redmond in the past but I'm only too happy to see him putting in a great performance like that, the frustration with him over the years is we know he can do it, but the lack of consistency makes us a little impatient, hopefully he can build on this. Apart from the Wolves defeat i think it’s been a decent start to the season, with some winnable fixtures coming up hopefully we can start to climb up the table. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Chelsea The Verdict at 17:00:50
Sorry to hear about your accident. Hope your feeling better. Yes it was a disappointing result after been level right up to the 80th minute. Holding out with the champions of Europe for that long is no easy feat, yes they were all over us in the first half and we got a couple of VAR decisions go our way. At the start of the season 4 points after the first 7 games would be a realistic and a acceptable return considering the opposition, the real challenge for Ralph will be the next 7 games, with some winnable fixtures coming up anything less than 9 points and serious question will be getting asked, i like Ralph but this period will be crucial. i hope he get its right and turn things around. The big concern is the attacking, creating chances and scoring goals, we just don't have the creativity in the current squad, i really question why we bought Theo, Redmond doesn't create enough (evident in the past 5 seasons), jury is still out on Djenepo, Elyounoussi needs more consistency. This should change when Stuy comes back. I would like to see Tella get more time and see Tino tested on the wing. A Armstrong and Adams will work all day but without proper service its going to be hard for them to score goals. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Manchester City The Verdict at 14:35:06
Great result and performance. Everyone played, special mention to Romeu who was immense, Pep even praised him in his interview. Salisu and Bednerak would be my first choice CB pairing but Stephens is in the best form in a saints shirt and was making that CB position his own, he was unlucky to get injured. The defence has been pretty solid this season, utd, city & west ham have scored 32 goals so far but all only managed one goal against us which is a credit to how well we have defended as a team, it’s our attacking play and goal scoring which needs to improve and start putting the ball in the net more often. A fit Ings was probably a 20 goals a season striker, this is an area that saints will have to spend £40m+ to get a striker on this stature, I think lack of goals will be our Achilles heel this season, based on the games so far it won’t be the defence. |
| News Comment | Southampton V West Ham United The Verdict at 20:02:39
Good result but looking back we should have won it. Excellent defensive and goalkeeping performance, credit to them. JWP hasn't had a great start to the season, even his set pieces haven't been up to the standard we have come to expect from him. Redmond should be used as an impact player if we are chasing a game, he offers too little to last 90mins (yes he played well against Newcastle but his not a player who capitalizes on a good performance), Tella must be so frustrated seeing Redmond constantly been picked ahead of him. Djenepo's unpredictability would be a good option against City, their defenders may find it hard to read him. Bora Looked good when he came on, hope we see more of him. |
| News Comment | Southampton May Yet Make It 9 In The Transfer Window ! at 15:28:32
I would like to see a retired experience CB to come in as a coaching role, not sure who is available out there with coaching experience ? Cant see us playing the wages for a player to spend most of the season on the bench. We should be ok for cover in midfield with Stu & Smallbone. If we were going to make another signing i would like to see a Goalkeeper, i don't see the McCarthy/Forster rotation working (it sends the message we don't have faith in either), keep one as back up and either loan out & sell the other, however i don't see this happening since we probably would have to take a risk on unproven keeper based on our budget. We Could always take in an older keeper for a couple seasons until we get this position sorted, i thought Tom Heaton would have been a good option. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Newport County The Verdict at 15:06:44
I didn't see the game but very happy with the result. Yes it was Newport but 8 goals away from home with most of the first team missing is still impressive. Good to see Broja get off the mark, KWP get his first competitive goal as well as Tella & Redmond scoring. I was hoping to see Simeu in the line up and get a run out. Happy for Elyounoussi, i still think we have a gem here, hopefully his hat-trick will get him more opportunities in the fist team, compared to the chances Redmond & Theo have been given its time for Elyounoussi to get his. |
| News Comment | Southampton Make 8th Signing Of The Summer at 14:48:13
Not too familiar with this Lad but happy we got a 4th central defender in, i would agree an experienced central defender would help not just Lyanco but the whole defense as a whole, i also agree with highfield49 that bringing in a recently retired defender would make more sense. I wonder if the club has ever consider a Michael Svensson or Claus Lundekvam type option, an ex club player & legend who would definitely be popular with the fans. Or maybe Fonte when he retires ? |
| News Comment | Is Stuart Armstrong Heading Out Of St Mary's at 16:22:05
Hopefully just rumours and he stays. His been the most exciting transfer we have made over the past few seasons. His our best attacking option from midfield and we don't have a suitable replacement of his quality ready. I would put his absence down to injury since his such an integral part of how we play i cant see why Ralph would leave him out when his available, we are such a better team when his playing. |
| News Comment | Saints Bring In Defender From Everton at 15:51:59
Another great addition this season, good to see our recruitment back on track and getting young prospects in. I hope we get to see Small & Simeu feature in the first team this season (just look at how good Tino is doing) and not held back as i believe we are doing with Tella. I'm happy we gave Ralph time because when he came he couldn't build his own team straight away since there was so much deadwood that he was never going to use, looking over the past five seasons is clear that we cant just get rid of players straight way, how long did we have Classie, Hodet, Lemina, Carrillo, Boufal before we could get rid. |
| News Comment | Wesley Hoedt Joins Anderlecht at 13:23:39
Hoedt had the potential to be a decent player for us but it never worked out. I put it down to poor attitude, as you might be correct to say he was no worst than Mya & Jack, he didn’t have the same heart and dedication that they had which counts for a lot in today’s game. I don’t agree that fans singled him out more than any other player but as you mention on 60,000K a week we would expect a bit more in terms of commitment. its not just at Saints where there was problems, a pattern of the same issue occurred at the other clubs he has been loaned out too and if I recall I he had a bit of a reputation for poor attitude before he joined. This is the best outcome for club & player, so I wish him well and hope he can get his career back on track. Just another repercussion from the disastrous era of Wilson & Reed us Saints fans still have to endure. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Everton The Verdict at 14:32:55
Disappointing result but i think we are slowly making progress. Some good performances in Armstrong & Dejenpo. Bednarek is a decent defender but RB isn't working out for him, thought the defence was ok but defending as a team from free kicks was awful, we really could have got punished. I don't like to single out players but Redmond was just terrible, when we are struggling like this we cant have players who contribute so little, was hoping Tella would have started since he looked good when we came on. This may be an unpopular choice but do we keep the like of Hodet, Lemina, Elyounoussi, Long when they come back from loan, at least for squad depth ? With the lack of youngsters coming through and if we don't have the funds to invest in the summer it may be worth considering, i would rather get these guys off the books and move on but we are so weak after our first 15-17 it may be worth considering. I don't think we will get relegated, there is a few wins/draws still left in us this season, my concern is the summer and probably lack of investment to strengthen the squad for next season. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Leeds United The Verdict at 14:29:42
Very frustrating time for Saints Fans. I still think Ralph is a good manager but i will criticize him last night for not starting his strongest 11. I don't get all this bad owner/need a new owner hype, while i would agree the owner is not a football fan we are still suffering on 3-4 years of atrocious recruitment (for crying out loud Carrillo was our most expensive player at the time and he played 8 games). To quote SaintPaulVW “£40 million of players out on loan†this can’t happen at a club like ours, we just don't have the pockets & we are still carrying this burden which is reflected in our current squad. Nick has noted plenty of times on this site that we have seen teams who have invested millions, even hundreds of millions to break into the top 6 and hasn't paid off. Not getting RB/LB coverage is a mystery and we are suffering from it, Ralph doesn't rate Valery but we should be stating Ramsay in that position & if Ralph doesn't rate him we should have at least kept Valery who has some PL experience. Our lack of goal scoring is a concern, looks like Adams is a 6-7 goals a season striker, Ings is off form, I don't know Redmond's statistics over his 4 years here but i would assume not good enough for the amount of ball his receives, looks like Minamino could end up one of our top goal scorers at this rate. While i think we finally got our defense problems addressed (back 4 of Bert, West, Salisu, KWP) we now seem to be struggling at the other end of the field |
