Johnnie Walker RIP

I knew Johnny a bit (and Tiggy). A real gentleman and just as lovely in real life as he was on air. He'll truly be missed. Rest easy.

Clubs have deliberately moved on players with issues forever - and, usually, all concerned are acutely aware of the facts.

The 'seller', for want of a better term, will emphasise on-pitch benefits for a low, low price ('I'm cutting my own throat here, mate...'). The 'buyer' thinks they can 'fix' or simply tolerate, the off-field issues, reap the on-field benefits then cash-in quick off the back of a successful period.

We shifted Joey fcking Barton to Marseilles, for crying out loud. You cannot tell me Marseilles weren't aware of his utter bellendary prior to his comedy Frenchman routine. We only bought him in the first place because we thought we could fix / tolerate him off the field and reap some sort of benefit on it. Ditto players like Armand Traore or Kieron Dyer (whose issue was physical).

Sometimes it pays off - Sam Field or JCS had injury trouble but, with the right handling, have shown more here than at any of their former clubs and we wouldn't be without them.

I think Numpty's point was more about the human side of football. I agree with your point - we cannot know what is actually going on and, in many ways, it would be inappropriate for us to do so. I took the piss earlier, and maybe that was out of order, I don't know. Richards is a better player than I ever could have been and, as out of condition as he is, he still makes me look like Jabba the Hutt's obese lock-in brother.

But to address Numpty's wider point, I believe he is correct - sometimes what we think of as harmless can cut deeper than we intend. I see the 'player' is a commodity to be traded or judged against others based on an arbitrary scale defined by the needs of a specific team or formation. However, the 'person' is not the same thing. Richards the player is a cartoon; Richards the person is a brother.

Apologies if I went off on one and misrepresented either of you. I will resume my unending barrage of nob jokes.

If we are naming the Storm, I suggest Storm E-Daniels.

The look on Donald Trump's face...

(Side bar: my daughter's suggestion was Storm Zee. Huh. Kids, eh? No concept of real comedy).

This Chair is a better option than Madsen, at the moment.

I am making no comment on the game itself as I was AWOL but, on the subject of the result, I am actually very pleased. The Swansea game was, frankly, horrible and the teamsheet for today didn't fill me with any hope when it popped up on my feed. So to come home and see a 1-1 scoreline was an extremely welcome piece of news, completely against my expectations.

Well done you Rs.

I was thinking something similar yesterday but I went for:

Nardi
Dunne, Field, JCS
Ashby, Varane, EDB, Paal (illness permitting)
Kolli, Chair
Frey

Out of possession, Field takes the central CB role. In possession he moves up into the base of midfield. Went for EDB over Morgan to start but only because I think Morgan is better further forward.

Saito to cover Paal / Chair; Smyth to cover Ashby; Fox covers JCS; Madsen or Morgan covers the centre and Lloyd to cover Kolli / Frey. And that's it. We've only got Santos left and, frankly, no-one needs to see that.

What do we know, eh? This is why Marti gets paid the big bucks. Well bucks, anyway.

In my opinion, the injury list is made slightly more awkward because of our squad balance.

Our defence on paper was: 4 × CB (with 2 providing FB cover); 1 × LB; 2 × RB.
Our defence in practice was: 3 × actual CB; 1 × LB; 1 × Jimmy Dunne; 2 × WTF? (Fox and Ashby) and 1 × Santos, who is, as far as anyone can tell, a piece of surrealist comedy.

So, in effect, we were only ever 1 × injury away from a disaster scenario involving having to play Fox, Ashby (out of position) or, heaven forfend, Santos at some point. And we lost Fox, JCS and Paal together. One decent LB option solves that- just - because Field can drop back if necessary.

Midfield recruitment has given us options (losing Chair last season would have been disastrous) but, up front and in defence, we are short again.

Losing a player to injury is a statistical certainty. Buggering up the squad recruitment isn't.

From Marti - '“We have to move on. I prefer to lose one game 3-0 than three games 1- and hopefully today is just a bad game..." (West London Sport)

I'm with him there. Not a fan of getting thumped, but I'd rather it was a one-off than a trend. Yesterday was just awful but the second half was an improvement and showed that we can change things even with a weakened First XI.

Same article says that Morrison is a few weeks away. We're stuck with that back line (if they can keep it running). Remember that time we ended up with Kakay and Gubbins...? Injuries are not our friends.

Drank the sherry after I ran out of Pernod. And Ouzo. And Domestos, diesel, WD40, homebrewed 'tizer' and cooking oil.

It was a tough first half.
