Actually, Clive's analogy attracted up arrows. Again this shows the importance of reading carefully before responding!

In a word, raw. He's young, inexperienced, and has been rather thrown into the deep end. The fact that he's featured belies the lack of options up front. If QPR can get 1 or 2 strikers in during the summer, a loan to L1 will help Alfie's development.

Whilst perhaps Saito could and should have scored, it's not a howler and he certainly didn't "bottle it". He anticipated the cross back in and made a dash towards the 6-yard box. He's flung himself at the ball but unfortunately is unable to make a solid enough contact to divert it into the net. Them are the breaks when you're only 5' 5" (5' 6" with the Beatles mop). Koki's then had another late attempt but unfortunately didn't quite get the connection needed to trouble the keeper. At least the lad was trying to salvage something from the game, one that we played without a recognised striker.

The OP states: "Manager not the problem-let’s admit it it’s the players."
That's very clear and is a lesson to some in getting beyond the first sentence before reacting.

6 posts later the OP states: "Manager is great, best we have had in years" yet some folk are still under the impression that the thread is anti-Marti and a call for his sacking.

It's not. It's merely a disappointed fan who recognises that the manager is not the reason why this squad was unable to sustain the good run and challenge the top 6. It is currently short in some areas, particularly up top.

Frankly, this is hardly a revelation and doesn't warrant much reaction other than "No shit, Sherlock" and let's see what business the club manages to do in the summer.

Yes, it's astonishing how many responders have misunderstood the OP.

The OP is criticising the quality of the playing squad and praising the manager. Frankly, I'm inclined to agree. You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

If the board want to hang on to Marti, recruitment will need to be decidedly better in the summer.

Never is the lack of firepower more apparent in this current squad than when the opposition goes down to 10 men.

Before I'd read a single word I saw Gary Bannister and wondered what Marti could achieve with players of his calibre.

A squad heavy on number 10s managed 10 shots with only 1 on target. Sensible summer recruitment that targets the areas of need is required to take this team to the next level. In the meantime, we've found ours.

The Morgan - Varane - Field midfield
at 14:58 25 Feb 2025

Morgan has been deployed more in the 6/8 role than the 10. I may be mistaken but I can only recall Kieran in the 10 role once. In any event, QPR have enough number 10s on their books, there's no need to shoehorn Morgan there.

I agree that at some point the team has to play in the club's vision but only when the manager has the right tools for the job. As things stand, the current squad has proven time-and-time again to be far more proficient at pragmatic than expansive football. It'll take more windows and good recruitment (particularly in midfield) to get to the latter.

I think we're crossing wires because you're confusing different conversations. I realise that it's difficult for your bored mind to comprehend so allow me to summarise.

I spoke only of the aggregate payroll figure, something which you dismissed as idle speculation. I went to the trouble of pinpointing the exact figure in the report yet you continue to deny its existence. Bully for you.

I agree that the report doesn't quote exactly what each individual earns. I never claimed that so take that up with whomever did. That particular point is therefore redundant for the purposes of our specific conversation.

My point is very different. Now, hopefully you live in the real world and you don't need to see payslips in order to appreciate that football players command generous salaries that dwarf that earned by club physios, doctors, groundsmen, ticket office staff, youth coaches, retail staff, caterers, turnstile operators, drivers, receptionists, etc. It's not a stretch therefore to presume that the first team squad account for the lion's share of the aggregate payroll figure (a point which you agreed with). As a result, the figures are enough to get a sense of the average salary of a first team player.

Now if you find this emotive, I apologise, but it's the world we currently live in. It may be unpalatable for some but getting to grips with the figures is vital to meeting P&S rules and ultimately achieving a sustainable model. Pretending otherwise would be foolish and counter-productive.

The Morgan - Varane - Field midfield

I'm not so sure about home performances being that impressive. Our home form was shocking to begin with, the first win didn't arrive until 7th December. For me, the recruitment of too many number 10s left the squad unbalanced. The desire to accommodate them all has seen Marti experiment recently with Ilias in a central position, with Morgan seemingly sacrificed. Kieren can feel somewhat aggrieved as his form was excellent and he was a key factor in the team's resurgence. IMHO he didn't deserve to be dropped.

However, I agree that the poor form of Madsen is another key problem. We're desperately short of tough but creative central midfielders who can dictate proceedings and play incisive passes in behind. We've had to compensate for this shortfall by packing 3 in the middle. It was less pleasing to the eye but enjoyable nonetheless as we started competing and winning games. When we revert to a midfield 2 we struggle to exert control, and make players like Barry Bannon look like Zinedine Zidane.

Goodness me, gazza, it's not rocket science.

On page 19 you'll find section 4 "Particulars of employees". There it states that 176 staff cost £23,783,000 in payroll costs.

You have been informed by senior club officials on the finance side of the club. Lee Hoos himself presents the report on behalf of the Board of Directors and signs off the financial statements contained within.

The payroll information is there for all to see on page 19. It doesn't take a mathematical genius to analyse this information. Now, if you prefer to bury your head in the sand, that's your prerogative, but keep your weak criticism of those who choose not to to yourself (especially when you can't even be bothered to take a look at the accounts).

Whilst I have a lot of time for Marti, I do find it a little frustrating that we abandoned what worked well at the back end of last season for a more expansive approach that ultimately resulted in a nightmare start to this. We then reverted to a more pragmatic approach that brought a remarkable up-turn in form only to tinker again once comfortably mid-table. Though we've only an outside shot of making the play-offs this season, it would be nice to give it a crack by sticking with a winning formula, even if that's at the expense of Cruffyian principles.
