Funny that, an British friend who lives there was complaining this morning how that now China have more Golds than the US now NBC changed the way they calculated the medal table overnight ...so US stayed top.

Not sure if this is true, but according to a couple of the papers this morning, the Commissar, sorry, Director General, of the BBC is unhappy with the focus on Team GB and wants the last few days to focus on other teams. Seem the Guardianistas aren't happy with the patriotism and national pride the Olympics have delivered. |  |

I've got no problem with total medals being the criteria for the order of the table. Don't see what the fuss is about. The Olympic ideal is simply to compete right? It's an incredible achievement to get any sort of medal. So what if Russia are 3rd. We have bragging rights if you need them. More golds and only 43% of their population. Sorry.. Whole heartedly disagree.. Who cares about 3rd? Who came 3rd in the 800 meters last night? And why should we treat his medal as special as rushida's amazing gold ?
Nah for me i watch the olympics to see amazing athletes being the best and winning .. I dont mind seeing the odd person come last but thats no what its about or they wouldnt have any standards to qualify to compete

Nobody is saying you should treat Rushida's medal the same as his countryman Kitum's. It was an astounding feat, a true Olympian. But you surely don't require a medal table to make that distinction, it's simply implicit understanding. The margins between places are so fine I don't think we should simply disregard competitors who fail to finish first - seems like a very dodgy philosophy to me. A lot of fine British athletes have managed a silver or bronze. What about Gemma Gibbon's incredible silver medal in the judo? Or had you forgotten about her already? | |
