Our credentials for a top seven position will be tested today against the league leaders under Matt Sadler who were threatening to run away with the title but recently have been reined in somewhat. The loss of Nathan Lowe who has returned to Stoke City is a big blow for the Saddlers but they have brought in Ellis Harrison and Jamille Matt is likely to be fit today against the U’s.
They will still offer our stiffest challenge however despite their recent stumbles in the league.
DC also has a dilemma with 6 loanees in a team where we are limited to 5. Our recent transfer day business was very efficient but included predominantly loanees.
Anthony Scully, 25 loan from Pompey (again) – injured still Michael Forbes, 20 loan from West Ham Kyreece Lisbie, 21 signed for 2.5 years Kane Vincent-Young, 28 until end of the season Ken Aboh, 20 loan from Norwich Jack Tucker, 25 loan from MK Dons Tyreece Simpson, 22 loan from Stevenage
Retaining Samson Tovide was a great bit of business. This injury though is keeping him out at a vital time for the team.
Weather today at the JCS will be 8 degrees Celsius light rain and a gentle breeze. By contrast currently at home in Durham we have 4 degrees Celsius with a gentle breeze and sleet showers.
I don’t envisage a great deal of change in DC’s team selection today. He is likely to go with:
Macey
Egbo Kells Flanagan Iandolo
McDonnell Bishop
Anderson Payne Edwards
Taylor Subs: Smith Tucker Thorn Read Lisbie Simpson Gordon
As this game is the ultimate test it is important that we do not show them any fear. Respect the league leaders yes but take the game to the Saddlers. After all, three points today sends a message to those teams around us that we are chasing a top seven place.
Likely to be a decent crowd with Walsall likely to bring 1000 so perhaps 5,500 at the JCS.
I’m going for a 2-1 victory for the U’s in a tough encounter.
Enjoy the game. Up the U’s

Good write up, and think I agree with your line-up and bench Durham. Scully clearly isn't going to be on the bench for a while, and Aboh and Forbes a bit too green right now. I would imagine there will be some who'd like to see two up front, given our deadline day transfers, but one up front has been working well recently, so why change it now - particularly against the league leaders.
Grand stuff Durham, thank you. One of my first games as a little lad was a 5-1 home win in division 3 v Walsall. If my memory is close I think we had two very quick goals courtesy of a goalkeeping error and were 4 up by h-t. Jimmy Oliver had a rare inspired game. A repeat would roll back some years.
Will young Lisbie feature? I'm unsure if he's ever played other than u21 stuff? As such he may be a punt on his future - I expect the twin to follow from Braintree in the summer. Thus, possibly the Norwich lad could be on the bench if rules permit. Oh how I'd like to see Read in for Anderson too! I'd be delighted with a point today and a performance that does us credit. Since mid November I think our league record is roughly w6 d8 L2 which is terrific - turning around this failing juggernaut is no mean feat. Long way to go still.
Up the upward peeping U's

Early results.
0-0 at half time, and not much in it, but the U's have probably had slightly the better of it. Time to push on second half. Commentary has finally returned too - it's all looking up.
HT. and an air of confidence in the ground. Anderson should have put us ahead and 60%+ possession suggests good control. Walsall without Lowe looking fairly ordinary, hardly in our half.
I’d bring on Thorn for Anderson and add a tad more pace and height up front. Three points are feasible.

Lakin has sadly put Walsall ahead.
But Teddy Bishop deservedly equalises
Come on the U's

Outstanding result Outstanding performance
Top seven here we come.
Yes, that's the pinnacle of the season.....so far. Very well done all and reward for the lot of them clearly working together at last. It may be that the patient is not so sick any more.
We can even dream of a top half finish or even better now. Splendid!

Tackle of the season by Kelleher in the first half, goal of the season by Edward’s for the winner, Roy of the Rovers style. The key was equalising soon after conceding , which then gave us belief and momentum. Two great goals for the U’s , three great points . Anything is possible now .

Terrific team performance. Everyone contributed but I think two must be singled out. Bishop was the fulcrum for the whole team and Edwards grows in confidence each game, and what a finish!
Up the U's!

I recall a conversation about a year ago with a coach from a Championship club who lives in Colchester.
He said one of Colchester's problems over about four season's was that they couldn't find a good left back.
Quite simple that. But now we have one and it's made a huge difference.
As for the Samson Tovide non movement in the transfer window l am curious to know what actually happened in the last 48 hours of that window - apologies if l have this wrong but it is my understanding that a fee was agreed with another club.
Surely you can't be flinging figures around in the final few hours ( minutes?? ) of that window?
Or can you?
And back to the conversation with the coach. It was his opinion that Colchester United's defence set up was flawed - and that over a long period of time.

We've had Iandolo since the beginning of last season. He's been badly missed when he's been injured or suspended. Was probably one of the reasons Garner lost his job. Now 27 years old and approaching 60 appearances for the U's. Definitely worth another two year deal in my opinion.
