Sam Field 11:22 - Jan 19 with 2732 viewssdm1508

Just wanted to give him a thread to say I remember not so long ago when his formed and dropped dramatically and we did wonder if he would last in a Marti team. Slowly but surely he is becoming a more well rounded midfield player.

I know his finishing still has a lot of work but now we are seeing him make those runs. Spot the opportunity where as before he wouldn't be there. I know having Varane there really helps but he was tasked with developing his game and slowly but surely he is.

Even is distribution is improving and he is more confident on the ball. Little turn back and moves to retain position to then allow him to make a progressive pass.

Despite now playing in a more box to box role, still always has the energy to make that block, last man tackle or clearance off the line. He reads danger so well

I know he has said in interviews he hasn't seen himself as a captain but he is a natural leader and does so much talking on the pitch. I think when the time comes he is Cooks natural successor.

So well done Sam Field. So glad you are at my club. West Broms stupidity was our gain

Marti did one of those quick fire interviews for social media for the coaches voice. They asked which player he has managed that would be most suited to management. Without hesitation he said Sam Field

Field has been so good although he really should have scored at the end yesterday

His game has really improved he's so much ore than just a holding player now

He is our Barbet, Hill, Gillard, Wilson of this particular era of players.

Mr consistent, very rarely less than a 7 out of 10, but a players player, does his job with the minimum of fuss and on occasions his own structured element of flair.

He is getting more and more chances also and that's from his learnt understanding of the game.

A player who is consistent but at the same time always learning and nearly always available as well.

First on the team sheet not necessarily because he is the game changer but because you know he will do what he is asked to do.

Adaptable too. Was very good when played centre half one game this year.

Any managers dream man.

And an all round decent man as well and of stable personality also. You know he won't go off the rails like so many we have had in recent histories.

Ferguson had so many talents in his Manchester Utd squads through the years but when pushed to name a crucial player in his reign and other players also would have chosen, the name Dennis Irwin came up. In our particular circumstances, Sam is that man. All about the team.

Definitely a forever R in the mould of a Derry and a Hill.

Very grateful Sam will have the bulk of his career in W12.

Top man.

I like that he runs and tackles, but he can't pass. Can see Morgan taking that 6 role as he has Fields attributes, but can move the ball forward.

I think his passing is improving but it's more about his intent. He is now trying to make passes he wouldn't before. The more he tries them the better he will get at them. I quite like the set up in midfield as it is

He’s so much better in the box to box role. There was a period when it was so frustrating watching him play. I got the impression that it wasn’t a question of form but an instruction to play a certain way. Anyway, I like Field.

I think the 3 of Field, Varane and Morgan complement each other very nicely at the moment, and their positional play seems to be excellent. I know we have all had a beer, but reminds me slightly of Michael Carrick in there. A very calming, underrated (by some) influence on the team. Always happy to see his name on the team sheet in that midfield 3.

I think it says a lot about what happens when you instill confidence and belief in someone.

Obviously you need the basic talent and a positive attitude but Sam is thriving under Marti. Sam has always been the right sort and one of my faves but he's gambling more going forward and is more vocal.

He was the human shield for so long in our team but with Varane there and a busy Morgan plus a more solid defence and proactive goalie the burden is shared more evenly.

Love the bloke.

Just get him practising those 12 yarders with just the goalie to beat, though! Yesterday’s was exactly the same as the Preston one!

He only scores in pairs… wasn’t enough time for him to get a second - can’t blame a guy for wanting to maintain his record.

On the thread on my way home from the game I mentioned the role that Varane is playing not only for the team but for Filed and Morgan.

Varane allows them to be more box to box players, and Varane is essential now to our style of play

Banged on for a couple of years now how Field would always be the first name on the team sheet for me, though Jimmy is pushing for that spot

Hopefully Field will be a QPR player for a few more years, and our permanent captain. The guy is a model pro for me. Does his job and more for the team.

Great play to find the ball and room to shoot but anything to the keepers left and it was in then cue pure bedlam behind the goals .
He scored a beauty into the corner a few weeks ago with great touch not net bursting power which he went for yesterday.
He appears to be the midfield captain organizing the kids so add that to his impressive resume.
Serious player long may he run injury free and suspension free

Has done well to stay injury free since he joined us but does miss odd games due to totting up yellow cards.

Appears to have a great attitude and happy to fill in for us in different positions. I hope he stays with us for a good few years to come.

I'm a big admirer of Sam Field. Always available and almost always plays to high level.

One small thing I find a tad strange though is he always kicks the ball with the side of his foot and never the instep of his foot. But, as long as he maintains his excellent performances it matters little.

From what I observe, Marti has changed tactics over time, and this has improved some of the players.

Now Varane sits deep to receive the ball as our outlet to beat the press and as playmaker out of our third into the middle.

Field's job has been higher up the pitch in the past to press the oppo as he's so good at tackling and hopefully with the ball in their third. So, he is mostly ahead of Varane. If we are under pressure or there is an oppo breakaway, or as he's tall enough, Field is useful defending as well. What Marti has also added to his game is getting forward into the box, hence his goals against Oxford and Watford.

Morgan then adds even more as he's useful for beating the press as an outlet, dribbling in the last third (unlike Madsen) and making short passes. But Morgan also gets back (unlike Madsen) and puts in a few tackles now and again. These three, when they run (not like Swansea) and press hard, make it very hard for opposing teams to combat.

They are imperfect, as opposing teams find a way through, but then they come to our defensive line where Cook, JCS, and Dunne play. This is tough for the oppo if these three are on their game, which they usually are. Hence, they often, as you have seen, target Paal. Then it all comes down to whether Paal fancies it today or not.

Also, something else Marti demands is that wingers get back to double up on oppo wingers and help out the fullbacks. I often see Marti screaming about that. He wants to force the oppo to play through the middle against Varane, Field, Cook and JCS. Saito on the right seems to be able to do this, but Smyth has the pace to stretch teams ahead of him, and Chair gets more assists and goals on the left, so Saito is struggling sometimes in some games. In others, he's very effective. I think he just needs more mins over time to get used the the champ as something that surprises players is that its so dynamic, tactics will change game by game and that surprises some players.

For example, QPR has started having two players for our corners; this is a new tactic, which I am not sure about yet. But that is new. Just like the first goal against Watford, with a short free-kick into space for Morgan to cross for Frey. Where did that come from? New that from Marti. So, the champ is very dynamic and can surprise players.

It took Frey a long time to come to terms with it, Andersen is now struggling to adapt, or his body has gone, and Madsen has improved but only very little and not enough to get into the team.

zzzzzzzzzz

He remains what he's been for years now, the best player without the ball and the worst with it. Unless Fox is playing...

But he's committed, brave, works to improve, and as a team that does well creating by winning the ball on the press, he's an important part of how we play.

He does though need to start scoring goals when he's 10 yards out with a free shot at goal - credit for getting in the right positions, but chances like that can be the difference and it's not an isolated incident.

Superb player. Also, thought he was doing well earlier in the season when he was playing deeper and being criticised for not affecting things further forward. Ditto Smyth. Loved him earlier in the season also even when he wasn't getting to the by-line so much.

Surely you'd take that. He's played around 150 games for us in 3 years, I think - absolutely phenomenal!

I still think he needs to curb the backaward/sideward passing which sometimes slow us down and makes our build-ups more ponderous, but his eye for goal is widening, I think, and he looks good when he steps up the pitch a bit.

Overall, definite captain-in-waiting.

Poll: Keep our 12 game pts return going, and it's a 73 pt finish! Playoffs?

If he could spray 30 yard passes round the gaffe, finish from 12 yards consistently, and kept all of his defensive attributes - he would not be playing in the bloody championship for us.

I don’t really know what anyone on here could want more from Field. He isn’t Faurlin on the ball, fine, but name one player in the league who has Field’s defensive quality and that sort of ball playing ability.

Well said mate. Field is excellent. Look at him in tight situations. His timing and execution of the tackle is excellent and he can get us out of very tight situations. He is an excellent player. Probably our best outfielder if you look at his marks out of ten over the course of this season and the last three. I'm not having this criticism of the fact that he's not Akos Buzaky further forward ....

I am usually sat in the ground when the team come out for their pre match drills and it is noticeable that the defensive players are never involved in the shooting drills and I have commented that if our style of play now has defenders in shooting positions, then it would be sensible to have them practicing shooting scenarios.

The grass is always greener.

Usually 2 groups of 3 around 20-25m apart firing the ball at their opposite inumber for them to control and accurately return it quickly to the next player. They don't appear to head the ball much during the drills and I wonder if this is related to the awareness of the long term damage that heading causes.

The grass is always greener.
