I stand corrected, by myself, he has played a season in the Champ for Peterborough. They were relegated, but he was their player of the season apparently. He then had two seasons in League One. So some experience. But he is only 21!!
I wonder if there is a view to a permanent signing with this one. Loaning. 21 yr old centre half to replace you 34yr old, vastly experienced captain isn’t like for like.
Won the EFL Trophy with them too last year. Agree he's very young but he's played nearly every game for Peterborough in the last 3 seasons including 55 appearances in 2023/24 - at 21 he's closing in on 150 competitive appearances including most of a Championship season. More to the point he seems to always be fit and god knows that in a squad like ours availability is a quality all of its own. Seems like a good one to me - he's clearly keen to play and good enough to be ever-present in a recent Championship team which finished in the L1 playoffs last year, and not interested in sitting and rotting in Southampton's reserves.
He'll either now be rubbish or do his ACL in the first game for us, but I'm hopeful it works out. Don't think we'll get to sign him permanently (So'ton paid £3m six months ago and he's probably next in the pipeline for when Bednarek moves on or one of the other young CBs they have is sold).
The sad thing is this possibly means we might not see Cook pull the jersey on again, Morrison out long term (again) and JCS has reverted to his brittle self.
There’s the cloud for your silver lining.
Welcome and good luck young Ronald
Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal
In what universe is Southampton our rival next year? Our highest finish in the last decade was 9th. Our average league position has been 15th.
And even if we are “rivals”, what is the concern? That one of the eleven southampton players is incrementally better in the two matches we’ll play them next year?
If qpr don’t sign him, someone else will
None of us have seen this guy play. Not sure why we’re assuming he’s going to suddenly get a starting gig at soton on the back of a few random appearances at qpr. It’s not uncommon for these prem loanees to end up flopping and playing at a lower level - look at Joe hodge now on loan in league one
I’m generally not a fan of these loans but could care less abt how it helps or hurts southampton
Peterborough fans, who do know him, are saying he's a great signing for us.
I'm sometimes accused of knocking the club unfairly, but find it hard to credit some of the negativity on here re this proactive, impressive loan. He can obviously play, seems very fit judging by his appearance record (120+ appearances by the age of 21 is some going), will add competition for places, and he's unequivocally needed - especially if it means we don't have to play the likes of Fox and Ashby. Come the summer, who knows what will happen? I know some here can't bear to credit Nourry and the recruitment team for doing a single thing right, but the club should be applauded in my book for taking some decisive action to address a clear and pressing issue.
The extreme pessimism on show also seems medically baffling re Cook. Although the club comms is a moot point when it comes to the injury bulletins, he's out for, probably/hopefully, some weeks (according to Marti anyway) with a soft tissue foot injury, and he's 33. He hasn't done his ACL at 36! Thinking back to the likes of Richard Dunne, I could see him playing here for a couple more years at least - and hope he will.
The interview was certainly not in the Isaac Hayden league of positive first impressions but ultimately it’s about what he can do on the pitch and seems he has some Rangers in the family so good luck to him. We’re short at the back so reinforcements needed. Do worry about the lack of leadership with Cook out but hopefully he does well.
Have been speaking to a Posh fan about this guy. He says Edwards is the best player he's ever seen at Peterborough and an obvious England international down the line. Can only be a good short term signing.
I never get any inside info normally but mate of mine messaged this to me yesterday morning, Ronnie is a friend of his niece and told him he's signing for us this week
A genuine ITK 😉
Looks like a good signing and done as early as possible: well done the club.
Pretty damning of our summer transfer business that we've had to do this, but heh ho. If its view to a permanent then great, but I can't see it.
Not really - we can't legislate, nor do we have the resources to legislate, for injuries to three centre backs, plus two full backs. Full marks to the club for taking proactive action on the first day of the window with a quality new recruit.
The guy could be class, I have no idea, but this team needs more Championship experience and game management nous, especially with Cook out. We should be looking to bring an experienced head, IMO. Another signing with no Champ experience doesn’t scream “learning our lesson”.
He got plenty of Championship experience with a Peterborough team that beat us three times in the same season, don't forget, and swept the boards at their end of season awards.
Played for England in the same Under-19 and Under-20 team that had Morgan Gibbs-White, Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer in it, if memory serves me correctly.
Comfortable on the ball and with a nice pass on him as well, plus we got it one very early doors for once- I would suggest this is actually a very good signing indeed.

Reggie Cannon sounded like he'd win us the champions league in his interview....
