Westmonster and Wales on 09:36 - Feb 17 by Catullus | While I'm at it Kilk, how do you think an Indy Wales will do in rejoining the EU considering we'd have to answer the same questions Sturgeon has trouble with, the CFP isn't such a big issue really but we'd have to have a hard border with England and join the Euro. Now tell me, how does Wales manage a hard border with England? There would be chaos. How much of our trade is with England? |
The concept of a real border between Wales and England seems strange. But chaos ? Probably half the countries around the world have a land border with neighboring countries. I'm not aware of chaos where that applies. And they also manage to trade perfectly well with those neighbours.

Westmonster and Wales on 09:38 - Feb 18 by Catullus | You do know that if we went indy we'd have to take on our percentage of that debt? We'd be over 100 billion in debt from the outset. PS, on the previous post, we are not 100% aligned with EU rules, some of our standards are higher than the EU, workers rights for one. Once Brexit negotiations are done we possibly won't be aligned on so very much, how soon do you see Wales going Indy? More or less than 10 years? |
So the people who did not incur the national debt pay the debt, really ? Anyway some comfort ....

China is the biggest exporter of water and ice at US$649.1 million per annum. Do you really think Wales has the potential to export 11x as much volume compared to China?

The national debt is incurred by all of us in the UK. It's the UK governments debt. Wales has a share. The average market price of a litre of water is actually 0.1p so we'd be much better off, around Β£6000 per person, assuming the Welsh government nationalised water. Also assuming the English didn't respond by building a few massive reservoirs. Of course from that 6000 per head you need to pay wages and running costs so it wouldn't be quite the windfall you might think. Still it could make indy a financial possibility. I'd still prefer to be in the UK than leave and try to join the EU though.

That doesnβt make the distinction between what services are available for βfreeβ. If you defined universal healthcare to the same standards/services available fron the NHS that map would look very different.

Β£6.4 billion a year is less than half what the Senedd gets from devolution. Forgive the pun but itβs a drop in the ocean.

Another thing that I ponder, is the fact nearly everyone of these Welsh Nat's/independence lot seems to belong on the Corbyn side of the fence. Very left-wing wanting higher taxes! Now punishing taxes will hit the very middle class that belongs to the elite of public service provision i.e. doctors, dentists, specialists, clinicians, consultants etc. Not only that there are many other talented professionals in the upper echelon of civil engineering, science, technology, private sector, big business etc, etc, etc i.e. Individuals extremely hard to replace. If there were to be a Corbyn-esque devolved Wales raising taxes to punishing levels way above that of England? It would be only natural to assume that there would be large scale movement out of Wales. That would cause a tax revenue deficit meaning even higher taxes to be paid from the very people least able to afford to do so. And not only that, staffing shortages in vital services the people of Wales can least do without. The trouble is England is only a bridge/short distance away as opposed to an entire ocean.

Not really ... Indy Wales will be in the EU. Just like a free Scotland and an united Ireland. Sadly England has Brexited. Therefore no Freedom of Movement betwern the Celtic nations and England. Clearly there is a deal to be done on the 4 freedoms. It will be agreed and working by the time Wales gets there. I suspect many will want to work in the EU and england will face the brain drain. Wales will have EU workers rights and environmental standards. Wales will have the huge EU market to access. Wales economy will boom and the tax take will go up. This means more investments in high quality public services. Many small European nations are hugely successful.

Will Wales meet the Copenhagen criteria? We probably won't meet the financial criteria alone. I guess if Scotland goes Indy we will get many answers that will help us make a more informed decision.

That being the case, why are so many remainers up in arms at the thought of a hard border with the EU?
