Why are you and others banging on about Batista all the time? That was decades ago, it's hardly relevant when discussing the merits of a dictator who has been in power for as long as Castro.
Castro molded the country how he saw fit. If you're going to praise him for a good healthcare system then you better believe I will hold him accountable for all of his downfalls, of which there were many.
I'm totally disinterested in how good or bad Batista was.
Its relevant because Castro took over from him, the lot of the Cuban people as a whole improved, America did not like it that their puppet was gone and persecuted the people of Cuba via sanctions, even against that backdrop Castro still did well.
The issue going forward is Castro just like the old Labour party in Blighty both might have become victims of their own success with people wanting more, having attained a certain level they want to go onto the next level forgetting their roots or how they got there.
Educated, healthy, home owners some with businesses etc and the ones that are doing ok [only because of the revolutionaries/founding fathers] all of a sudden want more, they become Tories, in Labours case they all became Tories, so watch this space in Cuba. Its probably a cycle of rich get richer and poor get poorer and more exploited until there is a peasants revolt and socialism takes hold and fairness is introduced again until the wanabees start wanting more after a period of improvement and the whole cycle starts again.

Him and his side kick were mass murderers. I wonder how many of these people from around the world who see him as a hero, would actually want to live under his regime. The nutter nearly started a nuclear war. No better than that man child from north korea

Aspiration bad; violently imposed penury good.
That's the Bolshevik credo in a nutshell there, Tramp. Well done.
An idea isn't responsible for those who believe in it.
A professor puts the British Broadcasting Corporation straight.
Oh come on now Trampie, a mere PhD (or her countless visits to Cuba, encounters with Cubans there and in other parts of the world) doesn't give Dr Baden any kind of authority on this.
Not when the PS "intelligentsia" have fox news and sky to tell them the REAL truth.
Excellent post Trampie, I may not agree with all you say but you're bang on here.
Each time I go to Bedd - au........................
It was said that the Yanks wanted the Brigade 2506 to hold the beach head for a few days, maybe a week and then the Yanks would try and spin it to the World that they were ex pats trying to take their country back from a dictator and the Good Old US of A was going in to help the freedom fighters, but it didn't work the Yankee backed force was well beaten.
The Brits tried to tell the Yanks that British intelligence had gathered information that the Cuban people were solidly behind Castro and would fight for him and their country to the last [perhaps they told them that they knew Welsh guerrilla tactics and not to go there, lol].
Castro was said to have voted Glyndwr as the greatest person of the millennium, don't underestimate the influence Glyndwr tactics had on Castro.
Yeah I have heard that the one thing old Fidel loved is a good vote. Favourite Welsh leaders of the dark ages, who would win in a fight between a giraffe and an ostrich, top ten characters from the final fantasy series. He was always voting on the important issues of the day.
The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

When a keen, incisive mind of that calibre propounds on moral philosophy all must kneel in deference, Bryn.

So Castro was buying vehicles from the evil empire?
What a sellout. You would've thought he could've at least bought great cars from other communist regimes such as Russia, who's car industry is second to none.....
Instead he supports the American capitalist system, and a company that has a storied history with the American military no less.

I don't think you understand, Cuba is famous for old American vehicles, there are loads of American cars in Cuba from the 40's and 50's because of the embargo [pre Castro reign].

That broken-down useless lump of metal is a Russian UAZ.

First to put a rocket into space, a satellite into space, first to put a dog into space, a man into space, a woman into space, a man to perform a space walk etc etc.
Being first into space and being first to put people into space clearly constitutes winning the space race.
