Just off to bed. Taken a day's leave and stopped up all night - what a saddo I am!

As it stands, it's looking like there might be a very slim overall majority for David Cameron - oddly enough, quite a difficult scenario in which to govern and rather more uncomfortable than the big majority he had during the coalition. Ulster Unionists possibly holding the balance of power.

Pleased to see an increased turnout, with Danczuk back in Rochdale with an increased majority, largely (as throughout the UK) at the expense of the Liberal Democrats.

Interesting times ahead, with both Scotland and Ulster having increased leverage over events at Westminster.

Yeah, it makes me laugh. They want to force electoral conditions onto trade union members regarding strike action that most of them wouldn't pass when it comes to General Elections . Tory hypocrites.

And how many years of being in government have Labour had, to introduce electoral reform?

Hypocrisy is worst coming from those who accuse others of it.

But only 38% of the 66% who bothered to turn up voted for the Tories. That means 62% didn`t want them, so it`s hardly democracy is it? This is what happens with the first passed the post system, it suits the two major parties, so it will not change. Proportional representation is a far fairer system, New Zealand, have had it (MMP) for about twenty years now and in my opinion it does what it`s meant to do; stops one party from dominating, so anything that they want to bring in has to be agreed upon by two or more parties as no party since MMP`s inception has ever got more than 50% of the vote from memory. It has its faults, as any system has, but it`s fair more democratic than first past the post.

No, it does not mean 62% did not want the Conservatives. It means 34% don't want anybody (all parties), or don't care, or don't know.
As for NZ and MMP, since it was introduced NZ politics has been dominated by personalities (Mr Helen Clark, Mr John Key). We have been lucky in my opinion that they had strength to unite when a coalition was in place, and get something done.
My fear of PR is that the mish-mash of parties and subsequent squabbling leads to repetitive elections, and little progress. I am not a political expert, but I offer Italy as an example. I am sure there are others.
Repetitive Elections. We are a long way away DD, but do you want to read again, all the childish backstabbing bullsh*t we have had on our media over the last 2 months?

Cameron plans a 40 % threshold for striking- yet he was elected by 24 % of the electorate. What do you call that if it's not hypocrisy ? I'd have thought you'd have more sense than to try to defend the indefensible.

I have, and I'm not - it really is that simple.

One could argue that Cameron is standing up for workers rights, i.e. the rights of the 60% of union members (if your figures are correct) who didn't vote to strike.

If David Cameron made the electoral rules for general elections, he could be accused of hypocrisy. As it stands, he can't. Nor can I. I'd have thought you'd have enough about you to figure that out before posting.

Well, having elections every three years as it is in NZ and Australia certainly has you thinking, "Oh no, not again". Yes, they keep bringing up Italy as an example that Proportional Representation doesn`t work, but with a tiny population of just over four million, it does and can work as long as the pollies want it to. MMP only came in because Kiwis were sick of Muldoon and his despotic rants (he was PM and Minister of Finance at the same time). It would be fair to say that of the half dozen or so options proposed at the time, MMP wasn`t exactly an overwhelming choice from memory, but, in my opinion, a far better option than first past the post. I do agree with you of the mish mash of parties though, but don`t forget any party has to get a minimum of 5% of the vote before it can claim a seat in Wellington through the party listing.
As far as I can recall, the only politician in NZ who has any charisma is Winston Peters, I assume he`s still an MP and still winding them all up at the Beehive as he always has?

Winston still winds people up. Useless politician, as he just wants to be the centre of attention. Bit like the Danzcuks I suppose.
