Devils advocate ... What's the difference between using the term p*** (short for Pakistani), or say taffs.? I'm not defending bovi as he comes across as a bit of a knob. Language loses its power to offend if its contextually understood ? I've always found this odd really. I accept that words like ni*ger are deeply hateful due to the treatment of blacks as slaves. But Pakistani people have not suffered to the same degree at the hands of the whites ? If I'm honest I don't know many Indian folk really , though I have had good west Indian friendships. This type of reasoning always comes up in these threads. It is not for those of us who are not offended or affected to decide what is acceptable. If it is degrading to a person's race, ie treat them as sub-human then it is racist. It's the whole point of the N-word or Golly as a label - it's to deprive them of their status as a human being and put them on the same level as animals. It is the same with the term 'paki'. 'wog', 'spic', whatever really and yes plenty of Asian races suffered at the hands of the white man.
As an aside did you know that Chinese people think we all stink of milk and cheese. Is that racist of them, even if it's true and offends their senses or is it racist of me to make that sweeping generalisation? I'm never sure really. Good valid point . I think the base nature of a lot of people in general are confusing racism (colour) , with an ideology (Islam) there is a difference. If I was to make a sweeping statement like ' I don't like Muslims ' , it's not that I perhaps didn't like the ethnicity of the majority of Muslims (Asian), its that I just don't like the power struggle (ideological ) chain reaction its setting off. I detest coronation street , but I imagine the family in question are not shown praying to Mecca in every episode
