Well he is partly right in that they are run using free Market consumer-driven principles with big remuneration for senior managers. Few students or staff are very politically motivated. What is seen is over amplified views from a small number of politically active students who tend to be involved in student unions and the NUS. Most degrees are either accredited or have increasing vocational leaning. Certainly all our big ticket degrees have to meet defined curricula (medicine, dentistry, vets, engineering, chemistry, law) all have accreditation. I struggle to see where this idea of politically motivated teaching comes from beyond the usual suspects. Beyond human and animal health issues related to poverty and issues around animal welfare I can’t see where any political opinion could be involved in what I do. And that would be a comment that laws in the EU, Japan and currently the U.K. protect public health and set down welfare standards for animal production that are lower or absent in places like the US , China and Australia.

That's not really what he was suggesting though, Prof. Its just another lefty blaming the right while a righty blames the left when the truth is there is a fair mix of political views.
As far as it goes I have seen with my own eyes evidence of left wing views being espoused in a primary school by one of my sons former teachers.

And that is a fair assessment Cat. I also felt teachers imposed their religious beliefs of me. Since Trampie called me a Red Tory and Pikey a Marxist in the same week says more about the extreme headbangers than the more centrist views of most. Whether that falls to the right or left side of moderation usually still means a lot of common ground and common decency

I think it's pretty obvious that left wing ideologies are promoted in schools and Universities. Your story doesn't shock me at all.
From small children to impressionable adults, if you are in the education system then this will be pushed on you. Some examples being far stronger than others of course.
From a child being made to change her hero presentation from the then President of the United States because the teacher didn't agree, to CRT being taught, to one sided race relations, to cancelling speakers and events that don't toe the leftist party line.
I have seen it first hand, been told about it happening to others and read about it almost weekly.
That's why when they enter the real world many tend to have a breakdown at the very thought of somone disagreeing with them and explaining why. Then It's a simple ''fascist!'' ''racist!'' ''x,y,z-aphobe''... you name it and a swift exit, or a poorly rhyming chant with blocked ears.
Sadly I despair at the state of this generation who have without a doubt been shaped by politically biased media and learning establishments.

When did I called Pikey a Marxist ?, I doubt i called him that unless it was in jest as he strikes me as the opposite. When did I call you a Red Tory ?, where you fawning over Tony Blair or something like that ? as I don't recall.
Continually being banned by Planet Swans for Porthcawl and then being reinstated.

So you are giving US examples. There is a larger degree of local political mores on schools. The teaching of creationism and other fairy stories. Banning of books. Now let’s get back to the original point. It’s a trope repeated with little evidence. It’s out-of-date. Ideas built on the ‘young ones’ or ‘The History Man’. Students are no more interested in political causes than any other young people. Many are more concerned the campus has a Starbucks. Funny how most attacks come from those who have never attended university and certainly not in recent years. I teach specialised guest lectures across two other universities (John Moores, LSTM) external examiner at two others (Lincoln and Surrey) and have a child at Keele. All are focussed on their main customer (undergraduate students) and providing a service the customer wants and expects. And that’s not politics. Employability and entrepreneurship rather than Engels. Research income and work with business rather than Marxism. I am sure there are a few smaller post ‘92’universities Where politics is a bigger thing, but for the big players it’s down everyone’s priority list.
As for Andrew Laurence, I find him deeply unfunny as equally I do many left wing comedians. Clearly he has a chip on his shoulder. Perhaps he thought he was in with Kate Middleton and lost out to William. Or perhaps it’s rage that his middle class upbringing and opportunity (Grammar School and St Andrews) still left him short of the real toffs. Or perhaps he is just bitter that he never quite made it, just falling short. A journeyman comedian consigned to diminishing returns on the circuit, enlivened only by the odd bit of racism on Twitter

That’s what the video is about.
I disagree, the youth of today are far more engaged in politics or indeed political ideology than at any time in my lifetime and I would have thought many peoples lifetimes. The Trump era brought about a huge groundswell of political interest be that one sided, partisan and pretty uninformed or otherwise, but interest none the less.
My partner has just finished her Masters in University over here (2 years ago) and it was the same there. Social justice, white privilege, CRT (thankfully now abolished from many universities) and starting from a base not agreed upon in order to learn.
We have lecturers thrown out of campuses or forced to leave via intimidation for sharing non left wing ideas, pressure groups formed by students to stop anyone sharing a view on campus that they don’t find acceptable, such as there being only two genders.
Queer theory, gender studies and all these other “academic” pathways opened up for students to become further indoctrinated to this left wing nonsense that is killing society. Cancel culture, fear of free speech, the refusal to share ideas, the shutting down of debate and safe spaces.
These have been created and pushed forward by these establishments, there is just no getting away from it.
Students are becoming like Westboro Baptist Church children where they have no idea what they are saying or what the words they are uttering mean, it’s a mantra. Racist, fascist, transphobe - the second you ask them to expand or give a specific they have a meltdown simply because they don’t know why they are saying it.
Social media also has a lot to answer for. When students are talking about politics on campus (usually in the 2 mins prior to meltdown) you can see them trading on eggshells, looking around for approval hoping they don’t say something wrong knowing they will get cast aside by their peers.
It’s a very sad environment for creative thinking and learning. Incredibly destructive.

Yeah, of course you all know better from videos.
Name me one U.K. university throwing out staff for political views?
Sadly we only do boring degrees. It’s also easy to come up with commments like gender studies.
Of 164 universities and HEIs in the U.K. a grand total of two offer gender studies as a combined honours degree. Brighton and Swansea. At most a couple of hundred out of a million students.
It’s a lazy trope.

There is a big wide world out there where this ideology is sweeping like wildfire, that I can assure you.
I remember it wasn’t that long ago you were calling me racist and I think you said “a piece of dirt” for giving you a fact surrounding Planned Parenthood and their origin. It was rather shocking.
I doubt you would have jumped to such a knee jerk reaction 10-15 years ago, I fully believe that was a product of the current environment, maybe you haven’t noticed it creeping in.

Because it, beyond a small number of isolated cases, does not happen. I comment on issues around Veterinary Public Health and welfare as they were governed by EU directives, but the future of regulation is uncertain and we could deregulate like the US (which from a neutral standpoint has greater problems with foodborne zoonotic disease and lower welfare which is entirely based on the data) and some areas around Millennium Development Goals. Neither are left/right issues for most, just the extreme.
Cat seems to have been unlucky, as I was with an RE teacher who told me my parents were evil for divorcing. Monitoring of schools is much stricter and if anything governors, who tend to be wealthier professionals, are less left wing than most parents. As I pointed to yesterday more students take accredited and professional degrees than anything else. The US system is very different, as undergraduate degrees are at a lower level than those in the UK (any professional would go on to a graduate school) and tend to cover a range (Major and minor subjects) whereas we concentrate more on specific areas.

Where does this fella think industrialists and engineers are going to be educated?
Not at St Andrews like him.
I like doing lectures in the School of Engineering building-brings out my inner child with the flight simulator, marine aerodynamics tank and the solar powered racing cars. Still wonder why I became a biologist.

It never used to, but the political climate has changed now.
There are social consequences for not toeing that particular line and people want to outwardly be seen to be having the “acceptable” opinion.
I just read an account of what it was like as a Trump supporter at an Irish University who described himself and others as “imprisoned by liberals” and went on to say what I touched upon above with certain speakers getting banned by pressure groups.
U.K. is naturally behind the US, it always it when it comes to social trends. But without question it’s trending that way. The US education system is a disaster zone for indoctrination of left wing ideals, it’s horrific to see the reports coming out of some of these places.

No- The US education system is a disaster zone. Not because of politics but systemic underfunding and political interference from multiple sides.
You have read and seen videos. If you attended or worked in a UK university you may see a truer picture of increasingly professional and market-driven education. The demand for 'Mickey Mouse' degrees has long gone. We fill medicine (350 places) Dentistry (125), Vets (190) Engineering (500 across various programmes), Law (200), Nursing (120), Business and Management (200) with little effort. People don't go to university for the social aspects and politics, they go to get educated and develop a career.
Again, it's lazy rubbish. If you were expecting a left wing training camp you will be sorely disappointed.

Well that’s another reason, but we both know the reason I am calling it a disaster zone, the culture that is bred there.
I have read, I have seen videos, my partner has recently finished University and I have friends that are in University. My partner is in public health so she has close working relationships with Universities. Not sure what gave you the impression that it was not an informed position, like most things I write, it is.
Limited offerings of courses in left wing centric subjects doesn’t mean that left wing ideals can’t be spread there. I know someone doing a medical degree who joined an on-campus protest to stop Avi Yemini from speaking to students in Melbourne, a position supported by two lecturers.
Nothing is lazy, you just simply don’t agree. Shouldn’t be jumping to conclusions regarding my views and the information bases on how they are formed though, we have been down that road before.

Exactly then, you know better from a video because you don't live in the USA either.
We are talking about the UK because, with a few exceptions obviously, that is where we are. it is only a few posters who keep turning the debate towards the USA. Whatever is happening politically Stateside is mostly of very little interest on here.
The story about my son, while true, it was only one teacher and now he's in Comprehensive the problem has vanished although he does regularly call some of his friends snowflakes!
