I believe we should be looking at free-agents, and surprised it's taken until now to do so... It's obvious that there is very little money available at the moment, and I'd say there re some gems to be be had on the free agent market. I like the look of Jozo Šimunović, and at still only 26 he has potentially a lot of football left to play... Yes, he may have had injury problems in the past, but with time away from the gam they could now be behind him? I would actually seriously consider both of these players; give them a contract until the end of the season and see how badly they want it.... |

I still think we should try and tie Cedric down to a new contract (2 or 3 years) he's still only 28 and arguably at his peak age for a player. Surely a new contract for someone performing well at the moment is better than spending £10/£15m that could be invested elsewhere?
On another note, do we not have any other RB options from the U-23's that we could blood into the first team? |

I agree wit Ralph; as we currently only have 1 fit full-back for each side; and the clubs probably looking to offload Cedric in January in order to get some money for him (instead of losing him for nothing in the summer) - It would be good business to get £2m for Cedric and then bring in a quality replacement till the end of the season (and possibly longer).
Ralph said in the open-forum recently that the sale of Targett paid for Djenepo to be signed; so it's obvious that money is tight and we need to accumulate before we can speculate (so to speak!) |

SaintMark makes a good point, we can only sell these players if clubs come in and bid for them - The winter window is notoriously difficult to try and prise players away, so that does go in our favour that we'll be actively open to getting them off the books, and alot of clubs will just be looking for 'fresh faces'... I would suggest that we'll probably look to bring loans in for the remainder of the season (especially with the threat of relegation hanging over our heads!) - I'd like to see the likes of Cahill, Lallana and a Target Man brought in on loan once wages are freed up.. I think those 3 areas would transform our defence, creativity and cater for the need for attacking focal point we've been crying out for since Pelle was sold. |

Of all the names mentioned, I think Flores has the strongest background - He has won honours at numerous clubs, and I remember Watford playing good football under him... We were successful with the last ex-Espanyol manager we hired ;-) |

I'm not sure we will see one of our CB's sold - At the end of last season we played with 3 x CB's under Mark Hughes, so to have 5 in the squad means we have TWO backups... Sensible if you ask me. |

I'd like to see Gordon Strachan, he has the sort of character that would invigorate the players, with also the stern battling qualities to motivate them until the end of the season. We were in a similar position when he last came to the club, and we saw an immediate turn-around in results, attacking football with players fitness also benefiting. |

Dare i say the issue is also the solution... We buy young promising players, that will ultimately (and hopefully!) play well and provide a nice profit in years to come... But as previous posters have suggested - Are they team players, or just out for their own agenda? I would like us to buy more players from the lower divisions, as gems are definitely there (Dele Alli springs to mind!) where the step up gives them a point to prove... Also, maybe a few more 'characters' - All of our recent buys seen to be sculpted from the same 'perfect professional clone machine' - I don;t see many born leaders in the squad... |

Daisy_Cutter, I'm all for looking at young, enthusiastic, upcoming managers; but Sherwood has only managed 56 professional games and I feel he doesn't have the experience necessary.
Do we think that Everton are still interested in Silva, would they try and get him in the summer? Surely keeping Big Sam would make more sense for them moving forward? |

From what I heard, we as a club were happy to let him leave - He'd fallen out with a number of players, and was not embracing our ambition to utilise youth in the first team... We offered him a new contract knowing that it would never be accepted (and he'd ultimately leave). |

I doubt VVD would be considered for the Dutch team at the moment anyway, he's been out for too long and hasn't even kicked a ball in anger for 6 months... I honestly don't think we'll sign another CB unless VVD goes... The club have high hopes for Jack Stephens, and Yoshida has proven to be a worthy 'backup'. I'm not the biggest fan of Florin Gardos (simply because he's been permanently injured) but he has a contract to see out, and who would come in for him? I don't think we'll be about to sign another CB when we have 4 currently to cover two positions... |

I think the staff/management believe that with VVD in the squad we will have enough at the back... And to be fair Stephens and Yoshida didn't pay bad at the back end of the season. The fact of the matter is, Stephens has all the attributes to be a top player in time, Yoshida is a very good backup (and they're aren't many players in the Prem that are willing to have that tag) Gardos has been out for so long, who realistically is going to come in and bid for him? And we know that our club thinks long and hard over signings before making them - Only signing players they believe are good enough, so they have to stand by these players in question or they go against their model and the process would look flawed... |

A few weeks ago there were rumours of us going for Zlatko Junuzovic of Werder Bremen, a typical Number 10, creative player with a skill for taking free kicks... Agreed he is about to turn 30, which is not inline with the Saints recruitment policy, there could be some truth in our interest for him... I think if Tadic does end up going, we'll look to get a like-for-like replacement (who is slightly more consistent!) ;-) |
