The only German cheese I have any truck with is Bavarian smoked cheese. Either the classic orange cylinder/torpedo or one of the fancier hockey puck-shaped varietals. I'll often wander of an afternoon to the fridge and carve off a couple of slices to keep the spirits up.
Your fancy stuff sounds decent too, if more of a commitment.

Have you tried any smoked red dorset cheese Bklyn? My local cheese deli does a very nice one.
