I'm fairly certain the closing credits say something like
"this film is dedicated to the fifty"

Many thanks SJ, I had forgotten that dedication at the end of the film.
To me it's still a tiny dedication about the 50 men who were murdered, when taken from the camp in very small groups by the Gestapo and shot. To many people, the dedication the way it is written wouldn't have meant much. If those 50 had been American POW's ... You would have had all their names scrolling up on the screen.
You can tell the film was made by America, all the American POW airmen were removed from the camp when the tunnels were only half built, but they did keep watch on the early tunnelling.
