100% agree with your observations. Brexit has been handled poorly, party issues and political dogma have been put above the national interest. We won’t go back in the short to medium term and you are right if we did it would be on much worse terms. We had the rebate and while the EU weren’t happy, the veto we held ensured we could torpedo any attempts to remove it. We’re out and staying out and we have to put our energies in making the best of the hand we’re holding, like you I’ve got kids making their way in life and I want them to have the best opportunities they can and do well. |

We’re not in a great place, current lot are leaving a lot to be desired and the last lot are proving that they were a shambles in government and a shambles in opposition. Our politicians are poor. |

This whole process was started over 2 years ago by Cleverly at Truss’s behest, the consultation should have started at that point and, given the potential importance of Diego Garcia continued at regular intervals during discussions. We’ll never know what’s really taken place as it’ll be expert from FOI and wrapped up in secrecy for many years, but I think it’s another example of our governments coming up short again. |

Not sure how we’d have saved £24bn this year because in the last year of our membership our hate contribution after getting our rebate was around £12bn. We now have to pay the “divorce bill” which is reducing from £9bn per year to around £3bn per year. |

From where I’m standing it’s hard not to see a whitewash and the wooden spoon. France, Italy and the Jocks away, Ireland and England at home. Our best chance of a win is against Italy and that’s not going to be easy, if we pick up a few injuries against France it’ll be curtains. |

Agree with you, we can all see most aspects of it have been poorly executed, but that’s not the narrative we’ve been fed up to now. Putting it right will be a challenge because Brexit means different things to so many people. |

It looks like the Conservatives!!! In a key speech earlier today ( which unsurprisingly is not being reported by some of the more traditional papers on the right) Kemi Badenoch has laid a lot of the blame for the Conservative Party under Theresa May and Boris Johnson as it had failed to plan for Brexit and that they had also promised low immigration but instead allowed the numbers to rise. “I will acknowledge the Conservative party made mistakes,” Badenoch said. “We were making announcements without proper plans. We announced that we would leave the European Union before we had a plan for growth outside the EU.” It’s a political speak for saying it’s been a cluster xxxx - which to be fair most would agree with. Badenoch still voted for it mind you. We’re stuck with Brexit and have to make the most of the hand we have. People who are advocating we reverse Brexit are being unrealistic, it’s not going to happen because there isn’t an overwhelming majority in favour of a return to the EU and even if there was, it would take years to sort out. Now that it seems some of our political class have realised Brexit has been poorly handled, let’s hope we can get some action which will move things in a positive direction. |
| Forum Reply | Minimum Unit Pricing at 21:10 15 Jan 2025
If it can be proven to have worked I’d be more inclined to support it, but there’d have to be changes because as things stand it doesn’t see any extra cash go in to treatments etc, it’s my understanding the additional revenue goes to the retailer. There needs to be proper evaluation. I’ve not seen anything concrete which supports minimum pricing. |

There’s no promise of any additional funding at this stage which is not surprising, but at least it’s been recognised that our railways have been underfunded in “recent years” Maybe we’ll get some more investment in the future and see an improvement in local services. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c9d5pjpqwwyo |

100%. It’s complete and utter hypocrisy from Badenoch, her government rejected the request for a Public Enquiry and said any issues could and should be dealt with at a local level. If Badenoch had come out, offered apologies admitted her party got it wrong, etc etc it would give her requests some support, but she hasn’t. Why did they welcome the last report, say they were going to implement this that and the other but in effect do f…. all about it for 2 years? Labour have been in 6 months and have already started implementing the recommendations. It’s the same with Jenrick, he was out and about bumping his gums off last week until his actions , well let’s be honest his inactions as a minister at the Home Office were pointed out to him. He’s gone quiet now. I’m all in favour of holding people to account, but I really don’t believe a huge overarching public enquiry is necessary. It’ll take years, cost a fortune and most likely achieve nothing. If there’s going to be an enquiry, it needs to be at a local level where people can be held to account and their feet held close to the fire. I wouldn’t be averse to a criminal enquiry if it could be proven there’d been misconduct in public office - that’s a very open ended piece of legislation that could be very effective. |

The NI Troubles Act is “illegal” and looks dead in the water, I suspect the same principles, even if applied in some kind of new legislation will still fall foul of of the NI High Court ruling. We Gould change the HR Act to address other things we aren’t happy about, such as not being able to deport criminals etc. |
| Forum Reply | Commitment to Human Rights Act may mean IRA terrorists are paid damages at 11:07 15 Jan 2025
From what I can see it’s more complex than the headline suggests and the headlines are half a story with an anti Labour twist from the Telegraph. The government’s hand has been forced after the Northern Ireland High Court ruled that the 2023 Northern Ireland Troubles Act was incompatible will the Human Rights Act following legislation which was initiated in the Northern Ireland Court. There are several historical cases which have lead up to this (mainly lost by our government) which eventually resulted in the last government introducing legislation which wouldn’t stand the test of scrutiny. I’m not for 1 minute in favour of paying Adam’s and his ilk or the loyalists on the other side any compo, but I do believe in the rule of law whether I like the decisions or not. It’s time to revisit the HRA and tweak it so it can’t be abused. |

A modicum of good news - Inflation is down - albeit by 0.1%. Now the economists are talking about an interest rate cut in February. That said, with many commodities priced in dollars we could see increase pressure from fuel costs. |

Thanks for flagging this up, I live down that way and am tamping about the prospect of a 9.75% rise. I’ve completed the online questionnaire which highlights the options, but in truth the costs and changes they’re putting up for consultation are minimal and certainly nowhere near the scale of £18m. £160 over the year is a fiver a week, but it’s not just the giver everything else is going up and people are feeling the pinch. |
| Forum Reply | So Who Would You Like To See In Charge ? at 18:32 14 Jan 2025
Don’t think he did. I think his stint helping out a few years ago was enough for him. He’s got a lot to offer, even if he didn’t want to manage he could still coach the players to improve their skills etc etc. That can be very rewarding. |

Bangladesh is a very corrupt country and when they have a change of regime allegations against the previous crowd seem to be common place. It looks like Sir Laurie Magnus (appointed by Sunak after Boris left the Ministerial Standards job vacant) has (according to her letter of resignation) stated she has not breached the ministerial code and that there is no evidence to suggest she’s acted improperly, however what isn’t clear is if something outside the scope of the Ministerial Code has happened. As I said earlier, Bangladesh is amongst the most corrupt countries, worse than Pakistan and much worse than India . Not sure if we’ve heard the last of this. |

That’s the why I read it too, but then I read a second article which stated that they hadn’t worked the detail out yet and kind of implied it would lead to a 100% increase in the current tax rate of 10% to 15% of the property value which pushes it up to around 25% of the property’s value. That’s still a huge chunk of wedge mind. |

The Spanish are also looking at closing the Golden Visa process which allows anyone with a bit of serious wonga to buy their way to a passport, other EU countries have the Golden Visa scheme too which has enabled all sorts of people including some seriously dodgy ones to secure EU passports. The U.K. closed its Golden Visa scheme in 2022 after the Russians invaded Ukraine. The only people this will really affect are Mr and Mrs average who’ve squirrelled some cash away for a dream holiday home, the wealthy and super rich will be able to afford the tax. |
