⚽️ Swansea City v Cardiff City : The derby day thread
at 10:33 26 Aug 2024

We started with an incredibly high press, maybe expecting Cardiff to do the same. When they didn’t, Williams had two choices - slow it down or go for broke and hope we scored enough goals by half time to cope with the inevitable tired legs and substitutions. He went for option B and we were unlucky not to get a couple more. On another day, when this team has gelled more, I think we will. But Cullen - a great servant to the club - really is only capable of scoring one type of goal. We either needed Zan to start or a number 10 who can shoot from range, because Eom and Ronald weren’t managing to get enough crosses in for Cullen to score again. After 40 minutes we were running out of steam and they came back into the game. Second half they turned on the high press and we had nothing left in the tank.

To be fair to Darling, I thought most of our attacks started with him (whereas Cabango generally passed back to Vigy). Darling did make a couple of errors and went down rather easily when defending, but going forward he showed real leadership.

And while I agree that Grimes slows down our attacks, at least he and Fulton didn’t revert to their usual tippy tappy game when Jay came on.

Is there a problem with the settings on here? I’ve selected the football-only threads option but this seems to be a chat about how great On The Buses was.

Anyway, I never rated him as a pundit. Or as a footballer.

Swansea City v Rio Ave : Match day friendly

Fair play, there were some good passages of play there, JT showed a lot of promise during his fairly brief time on the pitch, as did RP, and Grimes and Naughton took their goals really well. Eom looks like a good addition to the squad too. And Vigy inspires confidence. All that passing backwards worries me though. Fingers crossed Williams has a master plan and the new recruits bed in quickly.

Groundhog Day. Endless passing between midfield and defence until the 'keeper is closed down and makes an error. Very lucky not to be 2-1 down.

The Summer Transfer Rumours Thread

Well I'm feeling a lot more positive about this coming season with a new striker in and talk of two more imminently. Lacking depth, of course, which is a bit of a worry given how injury-prone we seemed to be last season, but at least Williams et al are recruiting to fill the obvious gaps, which is a a refreshing change on some recent managers.

Gutted not to have been able to get down for the game (first home derby I've missed in while) but family circumstances prevented it this time. Looks like most regulars on this forum were there, judging by how quiet it is today.

Anyway, I thought they were all immense today and they all played with the passion we expect from a derby game (and which would be nice to see every game, quite frankly). I did gulp when Fulton and Cooper came on for Allen and Paterson but they were great too.

Darling was MoM for me. His reaction when Cooper secured the free kick in extra time said it all. He has grown on me. And what can you say about Cullen - he's a JB to the bone.

Williams got everything right today, down to inviting a supporter in to the changing rooms to explain why derbies matter.

Were 'The Belgians' really Belgians or was that an error based on Flemish and Dutch being basically the same language? They used to regularly show up at away games when we were in the lower leagues.

And that 4 point cushion could very easily have been 0 if we’d conceded against Sunderland or Blackburn instead of hanging on for the win by the skin of our teeth. Two very good first halves of football which show what we are capable of, but Williams needs to work on his second half tactics and think hard about Fulton and Yates.

What a difference our wingers make. And thank God we have made up for Martin’s catastrophic error in getting rid of them.

Pleased with that starting line-up. I know Cullen gets mixed reactions on here but I definitely prefer him to Yates. And Allen to Fulton. Just hope Wood and Cabango have another good game, and Williams gets his substitutions right.

Great analysis. I really hope you are correct. I must say that after the excitement of the first half, those second half substitutions had me worried.

Didn’t see the game today but from the commentary it sounded like Naughton and Ronald formed a partnership today the likes of which we haven’t seen since the glory days. It would be wonderful to think that we could hold on to both for next season and see a real Naughtonaissance.

A full back and a winger playing with purpose and understanding. How long has it been since we had that - one of the keys to our past success.

I like that line-up a lot, given what we have available to us. Would have prefered Darling to start over Wood but let's hope he plays a blinder and proves (yet again) how little I know.

Option 1 Start with Allen, and then sub him for Patino
Option 2 Start with Patino (anyone got any idea why he isn't getting more game time?)

I would love to see Fulton playing as a DM breaking up opposition attacks with Grimes further up the pitch supplying the ball to our forwards, but the reality is that when they both play the only attacks that get broken up are our own.

Totally agree about Key. And Darling. (I used to think he was a terrible signing and he's still liable to make errors but I have warmed to him this season because of his workrate.) Be good to have Lowe and even Ginelly for a few games too. Basically our injuries this season have been terrible and without them we'd have been a lot stronger.

But we knew the deal with Williams was always going to be 'they'll score against us, but we'll score more', and the problem is we are not delivering on the second half of that equation. He must have thought we had the capability of scoring for fun when he signed his contract, but for the life of me I can't see what he saw.

Anyway, thanks for the relative positivity on this thread - some of the negativity on Swans forums in recent days has been getting me down.

Can't blame them for that view. While I didn't see the Ipswich game, it sounded like we had enough about us to trouble most lower table teams, and that's who we mostly have to play for the remainder of this season. Although we only have three points to show for it, Plymouth, Hull and Ipswich seem like decent performances on the whole. Only Leeds was an absolute embarassment.

Having said that I am baffled by so many things at the moment, including:
- Why he persists in playing Fulton and Grimes together
- Why does Grimes persist in showing flashes of his potential (it's the hope that kills you...)
- What happened to Wood?
- Why do we surrender against 'big' teams?
- Why does Yates get time on the pitch (he's a bottler)?

I want Williams to succeed and I liked him at first but his refusal to take responsibility reminds me of a previous manager. I kind of wish we'd stuck with Sheehan til the end of the season TBH

I've gone for 'comfortably mid table'. I reckon we'll get at least 60 points come the end of the season.
