Trust chair steps down.
at 11:11 25 Sep 2024

I think you've really hit on something there TS

No better time for a review of how the Trust should operate in conjunction with the club whilst representing fans interests. The "community" aspect does provide an opportunity for revision, as does the prospect of anyone being able to step forward in the role just vacated. It's possible there's no-one who could do that, with time being the biggest element

Perhaps that's what should happen first, rather than just jumping into a new Chair and hoping the projected Trust meetings achieve what was intended - there's already some issues around that

That's a really good way to get back on track

There's a bit of a gap starting to open up between the playoff places and the rest, even at this stage. We've clearly got what it takes to be up there, just need to take that further step against opponents determined to sit back at the COA

Not having Sassi or EEL in the side hardly hindered us

Seconded

The quality and tone of the Trust comms whilst George was heading things was remarkable, and a very high bar for whoever's able to take over. It's clearly a role that demands a great deal of time, patience and diplomacy; managing that alongside a career must be a real strain

I suspect that JM, reading this, will take the opposite view. It can be read two ways but he'll put himself in the position of the Bristol City manager, except that he's working with players who are nowhere near Championship standard

There lies the idiocy

There's two aspects to this, although they're intertwined

The coaching mindset that says you should always seek to play the ball out puts the fear into a defender that if he doesn't, even when under severe pressure, he'll lose favour with the manager. That should never be the case, just as it should never be the case that a player is criticised from the dugout for taking a shot on goal

The other aspect is the rationality of playing the ball out quickly rather than allowing the opposition to settle. That will rarely involve a long pass downfield unless a forward has made a run which would put him in the clear

A "hoof out from the back" may well be the only rational option when under severe pressure. If there's a rationale that says otherwise, it's nonsense. I'm not sure JM knows that, even after a long career as a defender. It's putting our young CBs under pressure they don't need, and it needs calling out

They'd know something was wrong, but in order to understand what and why, it's important for those in the ground to express themselves when appropriate to do so. It's a different form of support - one that's seeking to put the club on a more sustainable trajectory

References to this forum or other media would then become irrelevant

That would be the way things should be done, and by preference of all concerned i expect

When the manager was awarded an extended contract giving him three years during the summer, those who're making the footballing decisions at the top of the club were clearly indicating they supported JM to the hilt. In short, that's not going to happen at Dale with at least one of the co-Chairs - the one who's being relied on by the new owners to make the right decisions, when it was precisely his inability to make the right decisions on the footballing side which saw us slide out of the EFL with barely a whimper

I very much doubt the Ogdens are going to wish to upset the financial arrangements which occurred when they invested in Dale, which could happen should they take the initiative on the football side, with which they're entirely unfamiliar

We are where we are, and yes we have a club which now seeks to become community-focused. The first people in the community they should be focused on is the regular fans, and we need to make our views known on this

I'm pretty sure a new instruction of "your first duty is to prevent the opposition scoring" would be easy enough to understand

Simple, but revolutionary...

But under the instructions of their manager

I'm pretty damn sure they wouldn't be doing it otherwise, but neither do i 'feel sorry' for them. They're not 'victims' but very well paid young men

It's time for crowds - the people putting their time and money into being there - to make their views on this much more loudly

One or two boos could be heard in the Huddersfield example. I couldn't give a stuff for the 'feelings' of those engaged in this anti-football stupidity, least of all the managers who insist their 'defenders' put themselves in the firing line

The reaction, the disapproval, should be made known by the crowd and in their thousands

"But we're there to support the team" i can hear some cry (e.g. James)

Bollocks. We're there to support a team which takes our time and financial input into account, which shooting yourselves in the foot by instruction clearly doesn't

Can anyone think of a better or faster way to change things? Apart from not turning up at all, which wouldn't since the manager wouldn't know the reason

He's grappling - for the first time in his career as a manager, with having choices to make due to a larger squad - and i don't think he's come to terms with it yet. That's not to say he won't but also why he remains insufficiently tested

Sassi is almost certainly being selected due to being slightly more adept with the ball at his feet than Ferguson, and it's already been discussed why that matters (too much, imo) to JM

"Imagine" is an interesting word

Imagine we signed midfielders and wingbacks who could actually play

Imagine getting the ball into their feet, and if the move breaks down higher up the pitch - not on the edge of our penalty box - we work to win it back

Imagine the players who've been schooled to create since boyhood getting the ball into the forwards or a cross into the box

Imagination is free; it appears to be more difficult to free your imagination

The bottom line is this: JM's reversion to having a CB as playmaker will not fulfil the Ogden agenda of getting more fans into the ground and have them coming back

We saw, and heard, the precise opposite against Solihull

I'd go as far as to suggest if we'd not gifted them two goals but scored at the end, the utter futule boredom of watching the first 80 minutes would've induced the same reaction among the less-than-diehards. People just won't waste their Saturday afternoons doing that

Employees who don't follow their employer's agenda - which isn't about our status but about our sustainability, remember - shouldn't feel secure in their jobs. Has JM any other tactics in his locker? We started to think so, but i remain far from convinced

Regarding the point about squad size, which the two statements take contrasting views on:

There's not much logic in justifying a larger squad than would otherwise have been the case just to cover for this competition

A larger Dale squad this season means we may have more cover for injuries, suspensions etc but also means a certain amount of juggling to keep the whole squad match-ready

By all means justify a larger squad for those intentions, but not to allow us to participate in a meaningless competition

That is, of course, correct

The fly in the ointment is JM finding a solution to home fixtures where teams come to defend then hit us on the break (or accept gifts)

That, for me, is the difference between a manager and a good manager. There's no doubt JM can manage... but can he crack the home form that would take us to the next level and have the crowds coming back, as per the Ogden agenda? The club have shown confidence that he's not just an average manager; he has still to justify that confidence

Agreed

There has to be some distinction imo between promotion/relegation within the EFL and entry to/exit from the EFL otherwise might as well just call the NL League Three and forget about other entry requirements such as ground capacity

Needs to be thought through by all clubs, not just Dale, but there's not much wrong with existing arrangements

If there's a financial arrangement been made which at least covers any deficit in hosting these games, that'll go a long way towards positive participation

There's no reference to any financial rewards for progression. That would've been useful, in what is otherwise a statement with welcome clarity
