'Outstanding' Bolton 11:09 - Aug 25 with 3832 viewsJHoop

I went yesterday and thought Bolton were very poor and that we didn't have to get out of second gear to pick up the points. So did I really just hear Dougie Freedman say,'we were outstanding in the first half'? Wednesday were a better team than Bolton, by quite some way!
On that showing, Bolton are in for quite a long season....

I felt they were lacking a consistent rhythm to drive them forward throughout the game, although Wheater was lively. Perhaps if Beckford had scored they would have got going. They were also missing Chris Eagles.

We were fortunate to play them missing Eagles and Pratley to be fair. The latter is very much their key man from what I've seen and would certainly have given us problems.

I thought Bolton were awful and we were slightly better in that we didn't have to defend much considering we were the away team. Our keeper made 2 saves the whole game and as mentioned Wednesday gave us more problems the other week. A draw would maybe have been a fairer result but we carved out the only decent passage of play which led to a chance all game and put it away.

Freedman was referring to some small passages of play in the first half.

In terms of performance, they were the weakest team we've faced this season, but they are missing several key players and they're probably still adjusting to the way Freedman wants them to play and they need to do some work on their diamond formation as it didn't have the right balance.

That might just be because they're missing some players, but there were elements to like in there, especially when they did find Chung-Yong Lee on the ball in the hole, and you can see how Pratley and Eagles would add to that system. They didn't get Lee on the ball enough in those dangerous areas, as he looked like he could find the inspiration they were looking for.

They should be disappointed with their own deliveries from wide areas too, as Marc Tierney should have done much better with a couple of his crosses and they've got to marry up the style with the strikers they have. If they're going to put it in from wide deep, then it has to be a type of cross and a type of run for the strikers, similarly if they're looking to get players on the ball in the hole, then they need runs like Craig Davies provided for the through balls to be threaded in.

If they're going wide to Tierney, they need to get Jay Spearing on the ball more as he liked to play simple balls into those areas, but Spearing wasn't really a focal point either.

I'd say the same when they hit us on the break, from a couple of poor corners we conceded possession from as they were great opportunities to exploit, but thankfully for us it always landed at Beckford's feet rather than someone with a bit more game intelligence about them. They've got to look to get the right men on the ball in those situations quickly.

Going the other way, they were poor defensively in wide areas and allowed us to overload too often down both sides, of which we eventually scored from. Having said that, Tim Ream and one or two others did make some very decent tackles to stop us in our tracks when we were on the attack, but I did find it odd to see us with so much time and space, and if you're going to let Clint Hill burst forward and overlap you at the other end of the pitch, well, then you only have yourself to blame. They didn't play at the tempo that they needed to.

Had a peek at one of their forums, and a few of them were purring over their performance.

Either we're spoilt, or they're easily pleased.

Great result, shit game

Bolton are missing some important players at the moment.

Eagles, Pratley, Holden and Mark Davies. Their whole midfield really.
Good time to play them yesterday.

Was a poor game, poor quality from both sides, no atmosphere...12.15 KO's just dont work.

Bolton were awful, the worst of the 4 sides we have played in the league so far and Huddersfield were bad!
