A mate at work is a Barnet season ticket holder, and he sent me a message last night after we’d beaten Hull.
He said Ronnie Edwards is a fantastic player, and he’s a massive signing for us, albeit on loan.
He’d been with Barnet from the age of 7 until he joined Peterborough when he was 16.
My mate also said that the Barnet chairman did a deal with Barry Fry where Ronnie Edwards moved to Peterborough for nothing, but Barnet receive 50% of any sell-ons. They’ve already received £1.5m from the sale to Southampton. As far as I gather, Peterborough have a percentage of any future transfer from a Southampton, and Barnet have 50% of Peterborough’s whack.

This is how the transfer system SHOULD work. Should be mandated by FIFA or whoever is in charge nowadays.

It wouldn't work because of the Bosman ruling. If the player leaves Southampton on a free then Peterborough and Barnet get nothing.

That would have been the case here too if the timing was different so not sure it would make a difference to the point I was making.

Edward’s could have sat on his contact at either Barnet or Peterborough but not sure it would have done his development any good. As has been said recently, all about timing but mandating a % fee of all career transfers into the origin club will encourage the Barnets to grow more of their own players.

Imagine a scenario whereby Eze gets sold in the summer and we use some of the money to buy Edwards

Good as he is I would not want Edwards in the team ahead of our own players as soon as they are fit.
Giving a player from one of our probable rivals next season decent minutes over our own lads makes no sense unless we have an agreement to buy him which I think is incredibly unlikely as Southampton have only recently signed him.

The least impressive thing about him is his ‘Barnet’.

Did I ever mention that I was in Minder?

Strangely, watching match on my phone yesterday, Edwards looked like a certain Terry Fenwick to me.
Maybe it was the camera being so far from the pitch, that I need glasses and it was on my phone, plus Edwards slight mullet from a distance haircut.

He does look a class act. But he does like to get handsy at corners doesn't he? Watching the highlights back he's literally clinging on to one of their players for the corner they nearly scored from. I know it's the kind of thing that happens at every corner but he's very blatant about it .

To have all five fit at once would be a luxury that we rarely experience. As things are we can ease the others back in from the bench and rotate later in the season when/if all remain fit.

I agree with this, I think (the not necessarily playing him above one of ours bit - though it's a quandry if he's adjudged a better starting bet than Morrison or JCS, say), but it's not improbable Saints could entertain offers in the summer. Whether we'd be able to compete to do business is another question, however. (It was still stupid to put him in at Leicester, though.)

Poll: Keep our 12 game pts return going, and it's a 73 pt finish! Playoffs?

I would much rather have an in-form Edwards play at the moment than risk (further) injury to one of our own. Send Edwards back completely burned out.

Like Hayden, you never know how well a player settles in here and wants to stay for another loan stint or even permanently.

Hold up - put the cheque book and credit cards down ! Step away from the vehicle….

We’ve seen him play twice plus a late cameo at Leicester.

Let’s wait until we see him against some better teams where he’s under more pressure and has to perform as we have seen others do, then we can compare and contrast.

I think he’s got potential too but 2 games against bottom three teams isn’t the right measure of a player.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

You do enjoy arguing in the face of indisputable fact, Haddock. Of course it makes a difference to the point that you were making. It completely obliterates it.

You moved away from Ronnie Edwards per se by stating that "This is how the transfer system SHOULD work". Were any governing body to introduce such a rule it would be very simple for clubs, players and agents to circumnavigate and abuse. It's nonsensical to think that an origin club should receive a perpetual percentage of all fees throughout a player's career. Moreover, with young players readily changing clubs at early ages, it would be difficult to define the origin club. Look at Eze, for example. Despite this raw diamond undoubtedly being polished at QPR, there are a whole host of clubs before us who could stake a claim for being his origin club. You'd also encourage clubs like Chelsea and Manchester City to hoover up all of the best young talent, even those they have no intention of developing, just to create an origin revenue stream.

Don't get me wrong, G. I love the idea in principle but in the majority of cases it just wouldn't work in practice. We live in an age of Bosman frees and pre-agreements. Players increase their options and attract healthy signing-on fees and higher wages by running down their contracts. It's an ugly truth but the truth nonetheless.

Played poorly at Leicester, played a luxury role at Hull who weren’t great against us - I am still not decided on him!

When hull were attacking in last few mins and he ducked out of the way of the ball - it had red flags everywhere

I hope he’s good but I also can’t wait for Morrison and cook to be at full fitness

It must have happened but I can't remember a single time a ref has done anything apart from walk over, have a stern word, signal for the corner to be taken, have another stern word, watch the striker get suplexed into the ground and award a free-kick to the keeper.
