What business is it of the police if it's not a crime?
We all they are investigating non crime and if you are found not guilty of a non crime it goes on your record that you have been investigated and so appears on any disclosure and barring check done on you in the future.

How can they investigate a non crime, or a non event, when there's nothing to investigate? You also can't be found not guilty of something that didn't occur. It's as if they are abusing any authority which they think they have. Police have no authority over anyone unless a law has been broken. This is one of the reasons that I don't have much time for them

That is the disturbing thing: there is the possibility that the mere investigation of an alleged non-crime, even where no "hate speech" was found, can disadvantage the accused person in future.

The driver for the investigations is linked into guidance from issued by the College of Policing who are the Home Office’s proxy for all things policing. The original article states the “Government guidance says that NCHIs are only supposed to be recorded by police when they are “clearly motivated by intentional hostility” and could result in further escalation.” Which is sensible, but it’s clear objectivity is being lost in the real world.

I think there is clear subjectivity here, particularly around the words ' could result in further escalation '. Imagine having your life chances affected by someone's subjectivity when you have not committed an offence.

I agree with you. Police forces are being caught between a rock and a hard place, if they don’t record the incident they’ll get hammered by HMIC and get accused of “cuffing” with the inevitable accusations they’re potentially missing out on catching the next Wayne Cousens character and at the other end of the scale there’s the risk of potentially criminalising people.
