Vividly remember the Bridgend v All Blicks game
This saw JPRs face ripped apart and repaired by 30 stitches from his dad . This you couldn’t make up.
In those days, the Precious Ones did whatever it took to sneak a win.
It was appalling and rather a sickening watch .

Poll: Christmas. Enjoyable or not

And the grounds were filled in those days not by people who happened to work for a certain company or receive a ticket as part of a commercial jolly or there to show off a daffodil hat and get plastered but by true working class fans who could afford to buy one and who truly loved the game and knew its nuances intimately . The game has changed so much off the field as well as on it , I sometimes fail to recognise it now from the golden era of the seventies it is certainly less thrilling and less enjoyable . Or perhaps we were blessed in knowing and living through what was and will forever be the greatest age for Wales in rugby and as a result have been spoilt rotten .
RIP JPR - You can tell the measure of a man by the messages left for him and reading the Daily Mail's tributes there were almost as many left by England , Scots and Irish fans as Welsh , truly remarkable and shows the high esteem he was held in by all - Here is one from Winston Smith -" I am English but growing up in the 70's JPR was my favourite player by a mile. A true legend of Welsh, British and world rugby. RIP Sir. " ......That comment says it all.

He was a great player and extremely brave. He has done a lot for charity as well quite recently.

But... ..... The 1974 tour was controversial quite rightly as it was in effect a tournament for "whites only" and I certainly would not have gone as a teenager. He was in his 20s and well educated.

He does not seemed to have apologised because Welsh people have cut him a lot of slack. All he had to worry about is people like me commenting on his death.

No regrets in this BBC documentary. "We did more good than harm" is a matter for debate.

You want to denigrate his memory , fine but start your own thread to do so . Regarding you believing that he would worry about the likes of you ,really

Just statement of facts. I made no judgement just stated I would not make the same decision.

He justified his decision on the BBC with another player giving a different view. There are very many like me I suspect and they wisely perhaps stay silent.

Why you call it denigrating is a mystery.

Shouldn't really be on this thread res, a bit like Builths comments.
Tbf , you've raised this quite a few times in the past, so no real need to bring it up again on the day the man has passed away.

Many went simply to play rugby
At that time, we were playing against Russia and her filthy, corrupt eastern bloc chums

The terms and conditions of the 1974 tour were as follows.

a) The teams will be open for players from UK and Ireland (The Lions) v South Africa (The Springboks).

b) No people of dark skin can play for South Africa. (as determined by the SA department of race assessments )

c) Players of Dark skin will not be given a visa from South Africa to tour.

The Rugby board of South Africa would appreciate cooperation from the Lions Committee not to pick dark skinned players from UK and Ireland.

Russians were only proven to be cheating over the last few decades with new advances in science.

To be fair to him JPR defended himself on film and accepted these notional terms and said the tour helped end apartheid.

I have not seen any comments from 'people of colour'. I am a white freckled , once red headed with blue eyed oddball and am willing to take on the mission.

WRU and the rugby players are royalty in Wales see butt. Show some respect!! .

No Sir. No blanket free pass.

As Treforys Jack has already said - JPR won the 1966 British Junior title in Wimbledon , not the Junior Wimbledon title.

How do know there are not "people of colour" passing comment on here??

Why would you need to say what colour skin you have, when passing comment on here??

I am talking about social media in general. I have read reams of praise on Facebook and other places which have not mentioned the controversial decision to go to South Africa.

I have highlighted his decision was questionable. He was of the view that the tour was good overall. I put over his case and was lambasted despite the fact I have not directly criticised him.

It will be argued they were different times. I was a teenager then and had the same view. WRU and Welsh rugby players are treated like royalty in Wales. Media people have to be careful what they say. The unwritten rules of being Welsh.

You do the math, some of us have already.

His School chummy went on a mission to Qatar to help educate them and to encourage them to bring their wealth over to the multicultural land of the Welsh Dragon, anyone seen any evidence emanating from that little Senedd Jolly Boys Outing???

Drakeford does not even like football. My school mates say he was a clarinet player at school. Music was his thing. He is re-reassuringly boring and is not going to get mashed up in the Holiday Inn bar.

I am hopeful the Qatar airways will return to Wales's national airport. This would be good for all of us.

Drakeford was elected to improve the lot of Welsh citizens not promote LGBT + causes Arabia. Effectively that is none of his business.

A Tory or two was sent with him to make sure he did not go "off script". I do not know who was in the team but like to think a woman or two went along.

Like I said it was a Jolly boys outing, with nothing factually achieved, apart from him enjoying the attention of him being seemingly important.
