Great news. I really thought he was a gonner. The other side of me worries that the reason he’s signed now is that there’s a release clause in his new contract.

As long as it’s around £6/ £8m then all good

Have to say I’m not a massive Dykes fan but I appreciate his commitment on and off the pitch and I might even go so far as to I’m feeling positive - potentially.

The thought of Armstrong, Dykes and wee Paul Smyth - not sure if we’re putting a forward line together or a team for the Wacky Races but saying that I’m enticed.

Really not sure about this .
Full of respect for him and the effort he puts in especially after being so unwell , but he has long dry spells in front of goal , ok if other players are weighing in but they were not last year and we could yet lose them this summer .
Personally I am feeling good about this season , but to go in with Dykes , Kelman , Armstrong and possibly Martin just doesnt cut it IMO

Your assessment of our forward line is not relevant until the close of the transfer window.

Dykes , am happy about.

Kelman and Martin - nothing has been decided as yet.

Armstrong, likewise, could be loaned but I think it be more positive if he is here.

Who is to say we dont get a decent loan and another forward brought in also,

But Dykes confirmed definitely a positive move.

Completely forgot about Kelman. I think for Kelman it'll be a case of see Charlie Owens.

I take it you did'nt watch us much 2nd half of the season.

If we can get our 2 or 3 of our no 10's around Dykes the way the likes of McGinn, McTominay, McGregor play-off him, hopefully we have a Championship level attack at least sorted for next season. Just a Full-back, Centre-half and complete Midfield to sort now.

In his last two games for Scotland he's shown facets to his game which his detractors at ours regularly argue he does'nt have, including;

1) Superb control + lay-off on weaker left foot plus great awareness to tee-up McLean for 2nd goal v Norway
2) A poachers instinct + no lack of pace to score the 1st goal v Norway
3) Attacking near post + causing chaos + a weak clearance for McGregors goal v Georgia

Lets see if he can do this more often for us with hopefully quicker ball into the box and our other attacking players getting closer to him.

Probably worth reading the Dickie / Dykes comment again as I think you missed the subtle joke 😁

Well my flabber has been well and truly ghasted.

A footballer showing a bit of loyalty. Even if he goes now, at least we can negotiate a decent fee.

Take note Chrissy Willock

Why do you think it has anything to do with 'loyalty'? Dykes will have talked to his agent, assessed what offers (if any) are on the table, and, most likely, decided which side his bread is buttered.

Interesting that Ainsworth is telling us 'he'll only get better' - this is player who'll be 28 in October, when he should be his playing prime! If I were being a bit mean (but only a bit), I'd suggest he's not exactly starting from a high bar and that that ship has pretty much already sailed. Personally, Clive, I'll agree here and now to donate a tenner per Champ goal for every one he scores over 10. I'll be pleasantly surprised if I end up losing money, but I'm also not sure we've got the players right now to go direct in any case than we have to go, uh, indirect. And I don't want us to turn into Wycombe or Wimbledon or anyone else not in this club's DNA.

I guess it's a big 'harrumph' for me right across the board. Needs must!

But I would think the release clause is more than we would get if sold now and a great deal more than if he ran down his contract I

I take your point that it is early days , but we couldnt afford a striker last season , we had no one to come through when Dykes fell ill .
We have other positions to fill and its generally acccepted that we have no FFP headroom .
I will be pleasantly surprised if we sign anyone to challenge Dykes for selection .

Suprising,but a good news!!

Yes,we all know he has his limits, but his attitude always 100%. Of course we still need another senior striker to compete with Lyndon, but i have a feeling that GA thinks Dykes as a main man upfront

That's exactly my worry.

Should suit the kick and rush style and with our budget we probably won't be able to get anyone in who's better than him

Add me to the list of people thinking this is positive news.

I've definitely been critical of Dykes's ability, but I respect his work ethic and industry.

Glad to see the club haven't panicked and sold to the first person waiving a cheque. This feels very much like the Eze extension, so now we just need to fatten the pig for market (to borrow Clive's phrase).

I appreciate we won't get anywhere near as much if/when Dykes moves on, but it puts us in a better position should we choose to sell.

Hopefully this encourages Willock to do similar.

For the many of you that don't like him, consider this... by signing a contract we will get more money for him if we chose to sell.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

I am really surprised. I rate Dykes' contribution to the team and was resigned to losing him for a fair few quid less than we'd like, so having him sign up for another tour of the Preston area is very welcome indeed.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

Personally, I think he’s been a bit of a donkey in front of goal for us.

But, I was really impressed how he conducted himself around his illness, I think he always works hard for the team and because of this I really want him to succeed, even better if he can succeed with us.

Maybe our style up until now has not suited his game, and now that our style is maybe changing, it may bring out the best in him.

I really really hope so.

Go on Lyndon!

Fair enough, but Gareth will have to find a Dave Thomas type winger to hoist over some decent crosses.

Simply, we would have not replaced him with any better for the fee we'd get for him with just one year left on his contract, so I am in the pleased camp. Is NOT going to be a prolific goalscorer, but will win his fair share in the air, will be available more often than not and IF we can get Smyth, Armstrong and some other pace running off him, it just might be enough to keep us up.

I think that the club knew that they can't replace him within our budget, so have supplemented his wage with some of JoJo's salary. Hope that they have left some in the pot for the 10 or so signings they will need.

Now for some wingers / full backs who can actually cross a ball...

Can we go out yet?

It might simply have been the best offer on the table (for Dykes) taking into account that a buying club would have had to pay a transfer fee making their total cost over the length of contract much higher than ours at the same salary.

Not going to play with no. 10s.

Just another reason why Willock has to go - he is not a striker and not a winger.
Similar to Chair; love him, but he is not a winger; he is a free roamer up top, so no place for him in Gaz's team. Hoping for big money for the two of them to free up funds elsewhere...

'Might just be enough to keep us up ' - wow, let's just take a moment, people, to note our complicity with the 'managed decline' of our lovely club (best London club in the top division not so long ago) such that we're now aspiring to stay in the old Div 2 with an under-par Scottish striker, a non-scoring rookie, and, uh, another non-scoring rookie.

With Dickie and Jojo's departure, we're going to need a minimum of least six new players to make us competitive next season, as far as I can see - inc. two strikers, a midfield playmaker, an enforcer, and a centre back/full back. And then, with the 'bedding'in' of new squad members, our institutionalised injury issues, and our usual dollop of rank misfortune, I'll be crossing everything!

Gulp and double gulp!

Great strategy - sell our two best/creative/playmaking players, and hope for the best out of the remnants. Just out of interest, what's your position for our final placing?
