Rugby League World Cup. 17:06 - Sep 30 with 9130 viewsDiscodroids

England have just Announced their Squad. Looks to me just about the weakest England squad of players i can recall going into a world cup.

The St Helens Quartet of Jonny Lomax, Alex Walmsley, Mark Percival and Lewis Dodd are all injured , while Gareth Widdop, James Roby, Luke Gayle and Jermaine Mcgilvery have all retired from international duty. Josh Hodgson and Liam Farrell both missing as well. Really leaves us light imo.

I think we look weak in every department other than our forward pack although Walmsley is a huge miss. The halves and hookers look terrible. Can't believe Shaun Wane didn't pick Jackson hasting at West tigers. Jake Connors omission to me at least, is shocking.

I watch half a dozen NRL games a week and was dissapointed to see Canberra Raiders Ryan Sutton omitted And wests Oliver Gildart as well albeit after a difficult first NRL season. George Burgess seems to have fallen from the face of the earth at the Bulldogs.

My tips are New Zealand, they have the best forward Pack by a mile and superstar backs in Joesph Manu, Dylan Brown and Jerome Hughes. Canberra Raiders Joe Tapine , Penriths James fisher Harris , Sydney Roosters Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Melbourne Storms Nelson Asofa-Solomona are the best props on the planet.

Samoa, Tonga and possibly even Fiji, all look stronger on paper than England to me.

The Kangaroos don't look as strong as in previous years especially without Tom trbojevic and ryan papenhuyzen. They still have Latrell Mitchell and James Tedesco, who are in my opinion, the best rugby league players on earth and have some brilliant halves in Cameron Munster and Nathan Cleary, As well as the worlds best lock in Penrith Panthers Issah Yeo, so will still go close.

Still Can't wait though. Rugby League, Love it.

Hastings injured, DD, George B in legal trouble I think. At least they’ve got Farnsworth and Radley back.

2008 was worse surely, Paul Sykes! England would kill for either of Keary (Ireland) or Moses (Lebanon) in the halves.

I thought Hastings made himself Available a week or so ago?.

As for the 2008 squad ; Morely, Mcguire, Sinfield , Burrow, Peacock, Ellis, Graham, Gleeson, Hock, Pryce, Roby, Senior, Wellens and Westwood!. I suppose one or two might have been getting a bit long in the tooth.

But Worse than this Squad! C'mon Mr Sheen.. You Jest squire! ;-)

Unfortunately rugby league in this country is run by morons. This IMG report that has come out needs to be implemented in full, immediately, or there will be no sport.

The squad you see here, easily the worst in my lifetime, managed by a troglodyte (watch them win it now :-) ) is a product of this.

This World Cup should have been this sport’s South Korea moment in this country. When Hiddink took that job on pre 2002 he did so on the proviso that EVERYTHING would be geared towards the World Cup. Look how that went, and what’s happened with South Korean footballers and football since. Look what tournament success has done for womens football in this country.

It should have been a reduced season, with international breaks and games built in, to prepare the squad and build momentum and coverage. Wane has been able to manage the team for one match in 3 years. What sort of build up is that.

Instead they did a season with loop fixtures (I’ve seen Hull FC play Wakefield and Hull KR 6 times), magic weekend, several bank holidays where teams had to play twice. They’ve introduced a match review panel that has run riot, banning multiple players for multiple games. Squads have played too much, too often, busted up. For the final Hull derby of the season there were 30 players ruled out between the teams. Hull kr named a short bench made up of three kids.

It’s left him picking what’s left from an already diminished pool. Getting Radley in sums it up. And the amount of players from the worst Warrington team in 30 years.

That’s before we get to the opening game being priced at minimum £30 upwards, leaving them with 16,000 unsold tickets.

It’s tragic. I love RL so much, but fck me is it badly run.

I actually wonder whether this might be the one where one of the South Sea Islands goes v close. Since they stopped throwing their hat in with NZ Tonga have been good, and Samoa’s squad has 7 NRL grand finalists in it. Looks unreal.

It’s actually great for International RL (though not for us short term), and bad for Union to see the islands rising.

Looking at the squad ,it's the best i could come up with. I thought Chris Hill , Mike Cooper , Ryan Hall and Kallum Watkins had all Retired.

1. Tomkins
2. Makinson
3.Farnworth
4. Bateman (out of position) would have selected Gildart/Toby King or Hardaker )
5. Young (would have selected Tom Jonstone at Catalan if fit)
6. Welsby (out of position but no jake Connor)
7. Williams
8. Thompson
9. Mcllorum ( Would have selected Daryl Clarke, Kruis Leeming or sam Powell )
10. Burgess T (No Liam Watts so Burgess to start rather than off the bench)
11. Whitehead
12. Batchelor
13. Knowles

14. Radley
15. Mcmeeken
16. Oledzki
17. Ackers to cover Mcllorum

Quarter finals Job. If Welsby or George williams get injured, we're all done before that. The only other option in the squad is Marc Sneyd!.

Oddest thing in League is players can seemingly swap countries back and forth like the way sone of us change our clothes.

Anyway Australia to win just because thats what they do.

Hope NZ win it though did look and see about seeing a game but none in London for NZ and didn't look convenient enough.

How's ticket sales gone?

Very little about it I've noticed in Media on the whole? What TV Channel?

Dark horse ( but no so much) Tonga.

Turned it on just before half time. Is there anyone involved in this who isn't from the north?

(Apart from Jonathan Davies.)

(And the other countries obviously - though I notice even the Ireland captain is from the north of England)

Ok, so there's one.

Difficult name to say - parents didn't need to choose Michael there. Bit of a Boy Named Sue rugby story I'd imagine.

Sorry - Basingstoke?!

Plenty of glee in Australia it seems, to see the Penrith boys take such a hiding. Can’t remember To’o having so little impact in a game.

Wonderful performance from England.

Samoa hampered by a couple of injuries to key players during the game leaving them gassed in the later stages and they were rigor mortis rusty. Not so much undercooked for the Tournament but Bloody red raw. England were magnificent.

Elliot Whithead after a terrible seaon at Canberra raiders was my man of the match.

I love this Game Moonpie!.

I’m glad I wasn’t on the pitch squaring up to the Samoans before the game, never seen anything like it on a field. No good if you can’t back it up though.

Very disappointed with Samoa. A World Cup where it's just Oz v NZ and England, and everybody else folding like that, would be terrible for the sport. Samoa should have been way better for the players they had out there.

Stood my ground in Mabel's and said it should be left on in the face of some Barbour jacket chinless fckers who wanted Bristol Bears vs some cnts on BT putting on instead. Then very, very determinedly sat there and drank my beer right to the end of a blow out.

I only saw some of the match (a bit of each half), but Tongo against Papua New Guinea looked a hell of a match.

Far better than most of what I've seen in Super League this season.

PNG were robbed tonight. Had a try disallowed, should have been awarded a penalty try, and saw Tonga score from a massive forward pass. Great game though.

6’5” and 16-and-a-half stone at 21! Have to admit I’ve never seen him play. Where’s he going in the NRL?

Gone rather quet on this thread, what's everyone's thoughts?

When all is said and done have there really been any great games in the group?

Mostly one sided affairs so far to be honest

Groups a bit of a non event, not sure if getting smashed helps the game much, same goes for the Women’s Union and League cups.

Anyone else going to the semi at Arsenal, day of the Coventry game? NZ perhaps? Still grieving from Sinfield’s missed tackle. Completely forgot about it, found the ticket in my Junk file.

England had a really strong team in the last world cup and took Aus all the way in the final. Sadly this time I don't see anything other than an easy Australia win.
