Vale vs Dale Match Fred on 21:47 - Aug 16 by isitme | Thompson did okay when he came on. We weren't creative enough to deserve victory but again paid the penalty for not defending set pieces properly. Camps should have started over Tanser and I'm not sure what Odelusi brings to the team. |
If you're looking at Joey T to change a game it only highlights the enormous problems within the squad,he should be a player to throw on when you're 2/3 up to save the legs of a regular starter. Some of the choices made from the bench and even the starting 11 is more than strange..

But it was very very poor again last night Rocky. Too many players under-performing for this early in the season, and weaknesses down the left side once again cost us. In reality, with their missed "sitter" from the first half, plus the missed penalty, we could easily have lost by 3 goals last night, despite us having a couple of half chances (and that's all they were...half chances) Annoyingly, Port Vale were also poor until half time, when they upped the tempo and we went noticeably worse especially once the subs were made. McNulty really isn't good enough to play in L1 at full back, and McDermott & Camps are nowhere near as effective as last year; they both seem to be trying to be too clever and keep getting caught in posession. The lad from Wigan is hopeless based on what I've seen from him so far, and Hendo drifts in and out of the game. Can't put my finger on it but it still feels like there is a huge cloud hanging over the whole club. There is certainly something not right this year. Tricky game again on Saturday. Lets hope Hilly can get the lads playing again, because MK will surely have scouted us recently and will probably come at us from the off.

I made a valid point and the only thing OTT was your response. Our recruitment has been horrendous thus far. Please let me know if you disagree on that one. The Logan signing was also a strange one. Again, let me know if you disagree with that. If you really think what I posted is 'all hell breaking loose' then your internet must have been disabled for the last month or so of last season. Some of your points are valid JR I agree, it was more of a generalisation of some of what I think are over reactions so early in the season. Hill must know by now what the weaknesses are, but it will time to sort it out, should have it been sorted it sooner? Possibly, but that's the way it's gone.

I think last night was a million miles from being very poor. No one is pretending it was just one of those games, or we were unlucky, but for me very poor would be losing 3-0 at home to Southend, not losing out narrowly to a side that had took four points from their first two games. We had a good first half display that we failed to take advantage of, yet second half wasn't good enough yet still could have seen us snatch something. IMHO Our issue at the moment is not scoring when we are on top - it cost us Saturday and it cost us last night. Had we gone 1-0 up last night, I think we'd have won it at a canter. But when you don't score, you always leave yourselves susceptible to conceding.

In the 2013/2014 promotion season we managed just one win in August, losing three and drawing two. We've made a slow start, nothing more, nothing less. The season has hardly kicked off and although I agree that the signings of JT and RNL are poor ones, suggesting there's something 'not right' with the club at this early stage is a bit of a knee-jerk reaction for me. Due to work commitments I haven't been able to attend a game yet but by all accounts we more than matched both Sheffield United and Peterborough and last night has been the only poor performance so far? Two big home games coming up in the league. Four points from them and we'll all be looking up the table again. Even if we don't manage that though, there's still a whole season to turn it around. Maybe that Southend result at Sheff Utd puts our performance into context. Seems the blades have been over hyped aga in. Tricky one Saturday, we need our boys to stand up and play to their potential and not wallow in self pity at the poor start. The Chesterfield game aside( since I doubt they took it too seriously) we need focus and good man mangement now to quickly redress the mini slump. But players like Skippy Thompson and McNulty and the wigan lad aint going to help. Give others a chance.

So far this season, we are relying on our attack to bail out our defence. The only time they have successfully done so was against Chesterfield in the League Cup. We do have goals in our team, but I don’t think any of our forwards have it in them to be consistent. Hendo did once — and maybe will do again — but, right now, I definitely think we need an out-and-out striker. Even then, though, the defence needs to do its bit. We’ve analysed the weakness of depth there already this season and I have no doubt Hill and co are as frustrated by it as we are. It remains to be seen who is available to us before the end of August. I don’t believe for one second that Hill was happy to wait until the end of August to sign players either, as I know for a fact he tried to sign players over the summer who went elsewhere for more money.

Good post. We have a bit of an history of starting poorly, but this time round there's a strange sense that the management of the squad, both in terms of personnel and deployment during games, has almost been deliberately designed to produce the effect that goes with the very clear message - don't have any expectations. Right from the moment the starting XI was announced against Peterborough, it's been a case of - why? As others have said, to release a player like Rhys Bennett and sign Joe Thompson as a squad-filler appears to be a serious misjudgement, compounded by our obvious defensive frailties that L1 sides will be only too eager to exploit. With a player as captain who takes all his emotional energy just containing himself, there's no leadership on the field and our subs, usually early in the second half if not before, shows we're getting it wrong right from the outset, with injuries only exposing already gaping gaps in the squad even further. I'm concerned about morale. Lillis knows he's on borrowed time, since we wouldn't sign Logan to have him sitting it out for six months. Too many players have taken a dip in form: McNulty, Canavan, Camps, McDermott among them but starting games with what seems like one foot tied behind our backs doesn't help them to regain what we know they can do and i just don't think these things together are just a coincidence. It's happening as a result of mismanagement and it's as if things aren't right behind the scenes. [Post edited 17 Aug 2016 11:43]

Southend's result at Sheffield United is irrelevant. They had lost eight consecutive matches before that and were given the fillip of an early own goal and another defensive slip to get them going. Last night is the only game so far in which we got what we deserved. To say Chesterfield didn't take it too seriously (because they were obviously willing to miss out on a potential second round game against the likes of Everton, Chelsea or Liverpool) is typical of someone who takes zero pleasure in Dale winning.

Joey T wasn't brought on to change the game. Cannon was on a yellow and looking more and more likely to get a second and had to come off. Looking at the bench it was a coin toss for me between Lund and Joe. Beechy went with Joe and to be fair he played very well unfortunately I think it was him that gave the penalty away. If it wasn't for Cannon being on a yellow I think you would have seen Bunney come on.
