It is my firm belief that there is no such thing as Time as an entity -- in any sense that it can be located or identified.

It's a system of measurement only.

Let's look at some similar units of measurement that do not exist.

Miles, leagues, acres, feet, yards. Where will I find any of them?

Kilograms, grams, ounces, pounds?

Hot, cold, luke warm, or more specifically zero degrees Celsius, or 32 degrees Fahrenheit?

Hours, minutes, days, years?

I don't care. I'm old. I don't have to.

Its the only other dimension, other than the three obvious ones, that I can conceive of. I can be in a location defined by x,y and z coordinates. Then with the addition of time that gives me the ability of movement within that co-ordinate system. It makes sense to me.
What I don't understand is how there can be other dimensions, even though we are told that there may be.

Time is another dimension, in the sense that we can move in any of the three spatial directions, we can also move forward in time (maybe in future even backwards), there are many theories that time does not exist, I think there's a through the wormhole episode all about this, and I seem to remember them discussing two dimensions of time which seemed a little farfetched but who knows. Time is also a personal thing, as we get older we perceive time to be running faster than it used to when we were younger, and I saw somewhere that one man was driving along one day when the whole world just sped up and time seemed to be going incredibly fast, but what really happened is that he had a neurological problem which made his brain process information much slower and his body had just slowed down which gave the same effect. All I know is that treating time and space as one and the same is fundamental to general relativity and that theory is still standing.

Well I don't mean anytime soon, in a few centuries, harnessing the power of black holes, it's believed to be possible to create a wormhole which going through would take you to a different co-ordinate in space and a past point in time. But that'll happen well into our future, we're no where near capable of doing it at the moment, but then just a couple of centuries ago people thought our Solar system was all that existed.

The passage of time has been described as the subjective sense of flow, Dav. The passing of which is mourned universally.

That's as deep as I go on Sundays.

Time is a term currently split between two camps. There's Newtonian law that prescribes that time is the order of history throughout the universe, a measurement and a dimension, allowing the categorisation from the beginning to the present, and beyond.

Then there is Nemenz law, which it appears Davillin is prescribed to.

However, you need to consider the fact that everything ages. From a cellular and atomic level, degradation will occur over 'time'. From a philosophical point of view, if time, as a spatial dimension did not exist, then would there be motion even?

We know that space is space, because it is a vacuous expansive area without population apart from a very sporadic sun and planet cluster. However, how do you get from planet A to planet B and work out how much fuel you need accurately? Afterall, time is also very much tied to distance too. As you move in any direction, you age. You do not get younger by moving in a certain direction, and we can remember the past but not the future, and we can therefore establish that 'time' is one directional. We cannot deny that there are forces at work that affects everything we do.

Sound is not heard straight after a distant lightning strike, and will appear to be even longer for people further away than you. Additionally, even light is not instantaneous. So how do we explain the differences if not for time?

Then we need to consider if anything else will effect time, such as gravity for instance (as The theory of relativity).

It's a very difficult concept to answer and that's why research continues.

Regarding your first sentence, The definition works perfectly for me. I'm not so sure about being mourned "universally."

Regarding your second, I'm sorry to hear that. [It could get lonely down here with no-one but drizzle, ape_shit, and Feyman's for company.]

Surely that should read that the system for measuring is a system of measurement only, it's not actually time. No?
