FWIW I agree with the OP with regards to Lillis' shortcomings but today is definitely not the time to bring it up. There's almost always a reason why a player's playing lower league football and it's usually because they fall short in a couple of areas, whilst players further up the footballing pyramid are more rounded. It almost has to be accepted that a keeper will make errors these days (as does any player) and for a large majority of the season Lillis has been extremely solid. If we did bring another keeper in (which we don't need to and won't) then it'd probably be a trade off with better commanding of the six yard box meaning shot stopping of said keeper would be of a lower calibre than Lillis'. Anyway you should be celebrating our promotion so stop being a moaning tvvat and get a beer down you! |  | | |

Rochdale fans like many others have/ and will always pick on keepers for lacking a certain attribute ie gilks and his kicking. We have to expect we won't ever have a petr cech or de gea. We have to accept an occasional mistake from our players because they aren't 'world class', they are very. Good players in their own right and better than we will ever be. They have fought courageously and against financial odds to get promoted over money bags such as fleetwood and Oxford. I will always accept mistakes but I won't accept lack off effort and all our squad and management have not only delivered the effort required but also shown they have talent required ( even gorgeous George) |  |

Is Lillis really considered "not the tallest"? You can obviously pick fault at some aspects of his game, he wouldn't be at Dale if he was the perfect keeper, but his height has never been an issue.
Lillis has gone from being a capable goalkeeper (during his loan spell in L1), to a keeper who was struggling along with the rest of his defence (under Coleman, but Gordon Banks would have had problems behind Ryan Edwards), to one which has improved to the point he's now deserving to be ranked along with the club's other great keepers.
Defensively as a whole we haven't got set-pieces right this season, Mansfield was the exclamation mark on that, but that's something the whole team need to work on - Lillis included of course. However his handling and distribution is now so good that he's become a vital part of the way we play. You never know who's posting and although I've only played about five games in goal in the Rochdale Sunday league, I reckon that Lillis is as good as anyone in dealing with shots straight at him and launching an attack straight away. Those low efforts you see some keepers spill are collected effortlessly and the ball is out within seconds to a player in space.
Right now I'd put Lillis on a par with Keith Welch, both capable of match winning saves and players who their team mates wouldn't swap for anyone else. |  |

I was skeptical of Lillis before the season started, but he has been absolutely superb all year long. His distribution is the best i've ever seen from a Dale goalkeeper. Sometimes I do wish he'd command his box a bit more, but if he's not confident of getting the ball, he's got to stay on his line. He never really gets caught in no mans land with the net completely empty.
It won't cost us next season either, that's a load of rubbish. |  |
