| News Comment | Southampton V Manchester City The Verdict at 02:41:40
If you have high quality forwards but your coaching style overcomes their talents wherein lies the fault. Clough picked his best players in each position and played accordingly…..some critics say he wasn’t a great coach. The coach is to get the players there on time and pick them up after the game. To start a game without a goal scoring forward is not a winner mentality. With nothing to loose Ted Bates always went for goals…. He could lose but he could also win and sometime win big. |

I think the players are good enough. They need something new from management that seems to be missing……. Ralph may just have run out of energy. |
| News Comment | Southampton V West Ham United The Preview at 12:57:32
The side he picks is largely academic. The nature of play is paramount. Speedily moving balls forward (not back to the keeper from a corner) especially ones picked up by the press, need to be used to attack the penalty area ie defenders and keeper giving our forwards a chance to arrive at speed or so that they can take positions in clear space to get goals. |
| News Comment | Southampton Have Former RB Leibzig Coach On Radar at 19:40:34
Ralph has said before that he would not go beyond his current contract as he had other aims to achieve. That is the end of next season. Having moved a lot of dead wood replaced with young and very young highly talented players the priority must be to get through this season still in the premier league. Further astute player investment and a controlled move on the coaching front would be ideal. However belief in the coach is an important and ephemeral entity….. maybe Ralph is winding down unconsciously. He has worked like a horse with a lot of poorly motivated players and saved our club on many levels almost single handily on the playing side. One step at a time I guess ….. hard as a fan to watch paint dry! |
| News Comment | Southampton At Manchester City The Verdict at 19:28:25
Sure it is getting harder every season. What’s new? We have always been up against it….. 1966-7 and a forward line of Best, Law and Charlton coming at a loose ball in front of goal!! Putting all that aside it was a case of tactical awareness. Teams know our high press and City will be especially aware. Yet we sleepwalk into the game with no real change. Look up and switch to the far post where a free oncoming runner has a free shot. Stuart Armstrong and Walker-Peters played to far up and without a big front player to get onto a relief ball we never got the second ball and it came straight back. Plus players hanging on to the ball meant we were playing through a hugely talented and organised team rather than catching them. It proved hugely difficult to penetrate to a shot at goal. This also is a fact against the lesser teams by the way. We lost big in the old days but we could also win big because we carried genuine goal threat ….. no such threat currently exists. The team played really well apart from that and should be proud of their efforts to play them front on and never giving up. |
| News Comment | Southampton Said To Want Nottingham Forest Manager To Replace Hasenhuttl at 02:31:23
It’s is a simple problem currently. Ralph allows the ball to be played backwards too early in the repossession. The result especially with KWP is constant back play before coming forward ta a fully formed deep defence. Further causing moves to be ponderous with players taking way to many touches whilst looking for a pass. Front players finding little space and having to do way to much to even get a sight of goal. They will penetrate only with moves of the absolute highest quality. Let the players and the ball off the leash Ralph. We have in Adams and Armstrong two finishers who flourish when arriving at speed in and around the area.play to that end product. |
| News Comment | Southampton V Newcastle United The Verdict at 07:10:09
We have become too predictable and correspondingly slow to adapt to teams who attack our style of play. We need to move the ball more quickly. To many players wanting two three of more touches. Borja has wanted an extra touch several times this season when an early shot was on. I wanted to rest him and brought Armstrong in up front who has looked sharper and ready to play. Adams doesn’t need to batter the shot when less would have scored. Guess we are a little tired and teams have bought in better players in January.. Great run up to now and it is a tough league. |
| News Comment | Ralph Hasenhuttl Charged By FA Over Mike Dean Comments at 22:30:18
Saints had progressed from being behind to looking the more likely to win V Chelsea and we are trying to say the sending off was Ralph’s fault. He failed to respond against a free spending club at the summit of the European game with a bench that arguably cost more than our entire club. It has failed to be pointed out that when Broya scored v Leeds he got deliberately taken out with no booking or review or subsequent slowmo dissection. Further in the man city game two clear No contact dives in the penalty area were completely ignored. Prowsey was clearly looking at the ball and showed no intent toward the player came across at high speed and despite an earth shattering scream was up and at it seconds later. Blaming Ralph for the inconsistencies of refereeing decisions which have forever shown demonstrable bias towards the big clubs is, in my view, widdling on ones own shoes. Saints have bounced back and beaten a Leeds side who were supposedly weakened....interestingly Saints had a similar number of players out but were not weakened? Ralph has had to work with relatively poor squads and is managing to turn even Redmond round. He is not without his blind spots but is without the top class players the the big guns have in abundance. Give him and yourselves a break! |
| News Comment | Southampton At Manchester City The Verdict at 13:41:03
Redmond is the most insecure personality ..... fails so often to shoot, falls over and looks around for reassurance. Just effing shoot man. The more times I watch the pen it becomes increasingly like a take down from behind ..... not a technical “ walker got his leg acrossâ€. Took him coming from behind at a rate of knots to make up for a mistake. |
| News Comment | Southampton At Manchester City The Verdict at 10:58:22
Stephens has stepped up in quality especially with being more assertive. The game ending pair certainly look better within the team framework. Stephens has earned his chance and his place in the squad. Re the penalty. Walker clearly came from behind and through the back of Armstrong. What really mystifies me though is two clear Man City dives with no contact. Yet not even spoken to? Dives in the penalty area should be a sending off offence in my opinion. |
| News Comment | Southampton Need To Sort Out Central Defence Pairing For West Ham Clash at 20:49:19
Bednarek has blocked more than anybody....he has hardly scored a plethora of own goals surely? Look at the recent goals conceded. Stephens is critically neutral when running against the opposition facing his own goal or “to nice†as Ralph puts it. Were he to develop this part of his game then he becomes a serious defender and player in my opinion. I agree with teamster1 re new contracts and player quality but they are useful squad players currently. It does bother me that McCarthy will not attack and make the ball his with players coming at him. |
| News Comment | Southampton Need To Sort Out Central Defence Pairing For West Ham Clash at 13:54:12
Experience counts at the back. I like Stephens as a player. But as a last line of defence .... forget it. He is the experienced hand with blessing of the manager. His confidence and leadership should be at its highest. He has to take responsibility for the players around him and be the man that blocks the shot by his own efforts or in organising others so to do. It is not hard really. Old players have done a great job for Saints in the past and it is not a bad idea to have them in the squad. But we have the solution but somehow refuse to use it at critical times in the game. |
| News Comment | Southampton May Yet Make It 9 In The Transfer Window ! at 11:20:54
Bertarand was on autopilot over the las 18 months .... speeches about wanting to spend the rest of his career etc is a sign of running a contract and making a kill. Ok but he was below par for at least a season. Saints were good to him ... make that clear .... Saints owed him nothing. Ings barely made half a season over his contract time with his injury record especially during the tough times in a season .... let’s not overplay his contribution ....which was worth more in the selling. Lemonade was a tool .... potential is only such if it produces .... lazy ... arrogant ... self entitled. Buff said! Big lumbering centre halves Who can’t leap or turn quickly are of little value in this league .... made some money back .... excellent offload. Gunn was never convincing from day one. Swiss attitude problem .... moving swiftly on. Some considerable monetary positive result from this lot was a good job! Already the air felt clearer .... the new players are a breathe of fresh air ....plus plus plus |
| News Comment | Southampton Still Have A Central Defensive Crisis at 12:58:02
A full on defensive coach has been a standout for a good while. Ralf is a forward by nature. We have GK coaches? We also need more voluble leaders on the field. Real driving players who know when to bollock and when to organise and support. To many players in defence are not really at the races when the opposition step up. We knew that Everton were going to come out different. Ralf should have altered things there and then not wait to see what the players do ..... that implies he doesn’t know what is coming. He needs to set the agenda and be big enough to bring some more dominant players in even if it makes it harder for him to manage. |
| News Comment | Southampton Accept Jannik Vestergaard Bid From Leicester at 09:21:36
Excellent business. He will be fine for the foxes. They have more class players who can cover his inability to jump, turn or run. All to clearly we cannot carry one single player .....everyone must be on board. Well done Rolf and the crew with your outgoings. Much leaner and hungry looking with more to come and surely will be attracting more class and ambition into the club. Clever trick to say we don’t want to lose any of them whilst taking the money anyway. Positive energy abounds. |
