Today at the JCS we welcome 23rd placed team Morecambe and manager Derek Adams. Earlier in the season I was present to see Colchester throw away a 3-1 lead with minutes to go and we drew 3-3.
Today there can be no repeat of such profligacy and I expect to see a 3-0 home win with Simpson opening his goalscoring account.
However, on Tuesday night 2,284 were present at the Exercise Stadium Harrogate with 162 of the faithful to witness and attritional 0-0 draw on a heavy pitch.
My eldest son drove me to the game and there were additional bonuses with Gerry making the journey from the East Coast and Noah present as one of the regulars on the CUSA coach. You will all have read by the now the scandalous treatment of those passengers who were not allowed to disembark outside the ground (contrary to previous years). This also made things incredibly difficult for the less able supporters to gain access to the stadium. Lyle Taylor generously paid for the taxi to transport one of our regular supporters to the ground from the drop off point some 0.5mile from the ground. The treatment of the spectators was simply disgraceful.
Once inside the ground we invested in one of the pies. Now Harrogate have pies, hot dogs, burgers and frankfurters. The pies are steak and come in what can only be described as a doggy bowl and we paid the extra to include mash and gravy. £8 might be seen as expensive but it really does offer VFM and on a cold and damp Harrogate night was very welcoming. Coffee, tea and Hot Chocolate were also enjoyed during the evening.
DC had selected the following starting XI
Macey Egbo Kells Flanagan Iandolo Bishop McDonnell Anderson Payne Edwards Taylor
Subs Read Thorn Gordon Simpson Smith Goodliffe Terry
I was disappointed not to see Tyreece Simpson starting up top with Lyle Taylor. It was not a night or a pitch for a single isolated striker but DC stuck to his guns.
Read and Simpson came on after 64 minutes for Bishop and Taylor and Thorn and Gordon on 81 minutes for Edwards and Anderson.
I used the word attritional because it was that sort of a game. One fan told me after 10 minutes this has 0-0 written all over it and so it proved. I am of the belief that had we shown more attacking intent particularly in the first half we could have won the game.
Will Greenidge and Matt Jay have both left the club this week. In Jay’s case I feel so sorry for him. Not only did things not work out for him but in two years he only managed 35 appearances and one goal for the U’s. He has now moved onto Torquay and we all wish him good fortune as a Gull.
Jack Tucker has also joined on loan from MK Dons. A left sided defender I wonder if he will replace Ellis Iandolo who has been shocking recently. He looks to offload the ball immediately refusing to carry it and his normal pass is a lofted clearance rather than looking to set off an attack.
The saga of Samson Tovide need to be brought to a conclusion. First is he really still injured. Second what valuation are these so called Championship clubs prepared to pay for his Services and third can we please retain him and get him playing once again with Lyle Taylor. After all we don't have to sell. Come on if we are serious about a top seven finish then ST needs to stay.
Now that we have 31 points which sees us in 14th place this is the time to step up the pressure on those teams above us.
DC needs to get more adventurous in his selection:
I would like to see the following today:
Macey
Egbo Kells Flanagan Tucker
Bishop Payne McDonnell
Simpson Taylor Edwards
Sub Smith, Read, Thorn, Gordon, Anderson, Iandolo, Goodliffe
Sadly, he will play Iandolo and Anderson instead but if only he went for it we might experience another handsome home win to set us up nicely for Port Vale on Tuesday night.
Colchester weather will be 7 degrees Celsius with sunshine and cloud and only a gentle breeze after Storm Eowyn decimated parts of the country yesterday.
Attendance likely to be just over 4,000. Enjoy the game.

It's not so long ago that Iandolo was linking brilliantly with Edwards, so I think you're right that he'll start. To me, he's always looked much stronger going forward than in defence. We started with Taylor and Tovide at Morecambe so I expect DC may well start with Taylor and Simpson - I certainly hope so. Too many cautious substitutions were made toward the end of the previous meeting when we should have been looking to put 4 or 5 past them when they were down to 10 men.

You are absolutely right about the negative subs used towards the end of the Morecambe game.
Let us see what Simpson and Taylor can do as a strike pairing this afternoon.
There is a rumour that Tovide is fit, if true and he is not part of the match day squad then sadly he will be on his way out of the club.
Either way that leaves us with a problem, Simpson is only on loan and so we still need another striker in this window.

Not good enough guys. We played a team in total turmoil, bottom of the league and down to 10 men for the second half; and we "thrashed" them 1-0. Suspect it was a performance on a par with Harrogate on Tuesday, abysmal.

We made hard work of it against a very defensively-minded Morecambe, but we got what we deserved in the end. Another 3pts, another win, another game unbeaten and another clean sheet, and now we're officially top half of the table - up the upwardly mobile U's.
Btw, is anyone else having problems getting on to the U'sual? It's taking an absolute age to load for me, and on all devices too.

Not quite top-half, thirteenth, but a healthier picture certainly.
They were lucky not to have someone sent off earlier in the first half, for a two-footed lunge on Egbo near the corner flag. I thought Simpson did OK but no more - there was more threat from Taylor. Inexplicably, DC persists with the ineffective Anderson. It was no surprise that we posed more of a threat on the right side when he was replaced by Thorn, who looked sharp and provided the assist. We were again much too cautious after our goal - I started to worry that there might be a repeat of the match in September.

Should have been done and dusted in the first half with two headed opportunities wasted. Not enough endeavour before Taylor came on . Ugly three points banked, something that sometimes is a requirement but vital in keeping positive momentum.
In the first half we struggled to break down an eight man defence that was time wasting from the off and content with a draw (or a snatched 0-1 win). It got tougher after the sending off as it then became a nine man defence. Newcomer Simpson offered little and soon had me thinking bring back Hopper and Jay!
Things changed with the introduction of Taylor and Thorn. But we still lack quality in the opposition box. If Tovide does depart, another reinforcement is desirable up front. However, three points was welcome, but I didn’t jog home with the usual spring in my step after a win. Frankly, I felt weary and a tad frustrated.
