Nope. A long, long community service and some form of re-education programme would make more sense to me. I assume you’re white Sogs (no slight intended) but would you expect someone to be jailed for calling you a cracker (unless they were a recidivist)? [Post edited 31 Mar 2022 0:17]

Someone Calls Rashford a nasty name and goes to prison for 6weeks! on 07:01 - Mar 31 with 2496 views | Saintsforeverj | Whilst they ought to look at the relative responses to other crimes, it's about time they did something that will have an impact against this problem. I have always been of the opinion that taking the knee and various other campaigns won't stop the determined, nasty racists, and has therefore not stopped the problem. Like everything (nuisance yobs, football violence whatever) in the end, it looks like they have realised there is really only one way to stop them. This will make an example of what will happen if a racist tries this again. I have always said that if they want to stop this.problem, actually stop it robustly, instead of pussy footing around. So.I agree with this. [Post edited 31 Mar 2022 7:02]

Someone Calls Rashford a nasty name and goes to prison for 6weeks! on 08:53 - Mar 31 with 2378 views | kingslandstand1 | I think we all know that both racism and burglary are wrong and I'm sure there are criminal definition Acts that confirm this, and correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Butty agreeing with that and only commenting on the degree of punishments handed out which could be deemed as either too soft or too hard for the crime? Surely any punishment that is petered out should depend on the affect on the recipient of said crime? I know of someone that had their house burgled and actually wanted to move house and all that went with that as they felt personally violated as someone had rifled through loads of very personal affects. Cost value of material taken was comparatively minimal but the feeling of disgust every time they went in to certain rooms hurt them for a very long time I've never been racially abused but I'm sure the recipient of that sort of abuse can also be affected if you are not strong enough to just brush it off. In the Rashford incident, did the abuser get that punishment because of who the recipient is and is therefore being made a political scapegoat?

Words too often give rise to violence. That's how the Nazis convinced whole swathes of the German population that eliminating minorities was the right thing to do.

Someone Calls Rashford a nasty name and goes to prison for 6weeks! on 09:30 - Mar 31 with 2346 views | saint901 | Crime and punishment - would be good title for a novel? Society decides what is or is not a crime. Most societies have fairly clear definitions for major crimes such as murder or insurrection etc. When we get to less serious crimes, we see cultural influences come into play. Punishment for crime is the same. The UK has a tendency to lock up murderers for long periods and attempts at rehabilitation are at best weak. Germany believes in rehab and even capital crimes seldom result in sentences stretching over decades. The US - parole for capital crimes is very rare and if you're black even less likely. Punishment for minor crimes in many Western societies is designed to "send a message". Racism is repugnant and vile and those who are guilty of it must be seen to be punished. Burglary is perhaps seen as a crime that is visited upon all shades of color (although I suspect certain ethnic groups suffer more than others), is more often reported and therefore needs to have an associated "clear up" rate. It's also not a fashionable crime and many police officers think that so long as insurance is in place there is no real harm done. That is of course untrue on many levels. Nonetheless there is a general acceptance in the population that burglary is a less heinous crime than racism. So proven racists get jailed - to show everybody that it's unacceptable. Proven burglars are often seen as the product of a broken society and treated more leniently. That's not right and it's unfair and it's inconsistent and it's frustrating and painful to victims but it's what happens when real life impacts laboratory models of society.

He’s supposed to set an example. My garage got turned over and some expensive bikes nicked. The police weren’t interested until one turned up online for sale. And then months later I got a call saying they weren’t progressing. Crime does pay after all. The country is falling apart.

I’m glad that there has been a consequence to his actions. Perhaps there will be some kind of education programme for the person when they are serving their sentence? Hopefully it will act as a deterrent and make people think twice before engaging in racist behaviour. As for the original point, the problem with all criminal acts is getting enough evidence to bring the case to court and get a conviction. Often with the case of burglaries that is not possible. In this case it was an easy prosecution to bring as the evidence was right there for all to see. It doesn’t mean that a priority is given to hate crime over burglaries. The maximum sentence for aggravated burglary is life, which shows you how seriously it is taken. You want get life for using a racial slur against someone.

The point is this guy has only gone to prison because its Marcus Rashford. You could argue all the crickters should have done time. As for for the burglar case that i highlighted - this guy admitted 40 cases and they had another 30 on him. Yet he didnt get sent down.

Community Service would have been an adequate consequence of his actions. If you were racially insulted would you feel this was appropriate? And answer me this. Is racism worse of equal to sexism? If it's on a par, by your penal yardstick there would be hundreds of thousands of men in need of locking up as I'd be very confident that there are a lot more cases of serious and life affecting/limiting sexism. And no-one goes to prison for that (I'm talking verbal, not physical abuse). All this pious sack cloth and ashes and wringing of hands is all very well when it comes to race, but as Lennon said, "woman is the slave of the slave..".

Any hate crime is wrong whoever it is aimed at. It isn’t my yardstick. I just said that I was happy that his behaviour had consequences and the more people who get dealt with for anti social behaviour the better. If it makes others think twice before behaving like this then all well and good.

I'm not woke at all by any means, but racism is totally unnecessary. Call someone a complete t0sser for missing a penalty by all means, but this racist stuff needs to be stopped. People who can't help what colour they are, shouldn't have to put up with this nonsense. I'm not even sure what he said or typed to be honest, but this example will have more power at stopping racism than people taking the knee or campaigns. People know they shouldn't use racist language online or in real-life. I have no sympathy with the culprit.

Perhaps the guilty comment was only because of the missed penalty. Whatever, the prison sentence is way over the top, probably because the player was a celebrity and Man Utd. As others have said community service would be a more useful way to make the point. Btw Bending the knee is tokenism and pointless, especially since we often have to endure it on the motd on woke tv. Before anyone wants to accuse me of anything, beware I could be a trans black socialist!

If other racists get less of a sentence because the victim isn't famous, then ofcourse that is wrong too. But, these racists mentioning colour of skin, surely need to be stopped. It's just not on. Rashford didn't miss a penalty because he is black. And how stupid are these people? Typing racist language for all to see. [Post edited 31 Mar 2022 20:31]

I’m always reminded of a game we played at Arsenal before the cup final against them. The one we lost 1-6. Anyway,we were in the Clock End and the usual Arsenal crew (including a fair amount of black guys) were agains the fence exchanging pre-match insults with the Saints fans, one of whom must have made a racist remark. Anyway, the Arsenal lot went nuts calling for the old Bill and stewards to root out the offending racist. Fair enough. Not ten minutes later, a couple of female Saints fans turned up late and were walked along the touch line to a chorus of sexist abusive chants and cat calls from the same recently offended Arsenal fans. Hypocritical or what? So I ask again. Which “ism” is worse, because I can tell you from the look on the faces of those two women they were deeply upset.
