General Election? on 14:10 - Apr 18 by johncharles | Master stroke ? No it's not, it's stupid and irresponsible. Playing games when we're in the middle of one of the most crucial episodes of recent British history. Arrogance supreme. |
IMO you have it the wrong way round . The Spectator list 5 occasions when she has said she would not call an election early so this was not her Plan A The other partys have attacked her for not being elected (SNP) thrown her a curve ball of another independence vote (SNP) announced that they will employ delaying tactics to "grind Brexit to a halt" (Lib Dems) and will vote against any deal that doesnt suit their agenda(Labour) ... all of this posturing while she is streets ahead in the polls and her personal popularity ratings are 3 time Corbyns. Who is playing games during this crucial episode and if you were her under the same circumstances what would you do ? [Post edited 18 Apr 2017 16:24]

General Election? on 16:26 - Apr 18 with 2450 views | easthertsr | Austerity has been a complete disaster. The poor, disabled have paid a huge price over the last decade. The NHS and the education system are suffering not due to the number of immigrants but to the lack of funding from the Tories. As always the Tories seek to divide the less well off and those without the power.

General Election? on 16:09 - Apr 18 by essextaxiboy | It was the Labour party who introduced PFI intitiatives into the NHS plunging some trusts into Greek like debt , requiring a bail out and no hope of repaying . The NHS remained viable under Thatcher , the current government are not as right wing as that IMO . I am sure that the care in Spain is very good but the fact is that many Ex Pat pensioners come home and avail themselves of the NHS (with every right) when they need more than routine care .Maybe to recuperate with family or the need for follow up care They come home for pacemakers , joint replacement, chemo , and specialist hospital care from Moorfields and the like IE .. the expensive stuff . That is why we hold back on the full payment because we still have an unquantifiable liability of the expensive care . Austerity has not all but killed the NHS , there is a squeeze on routine care agreed especially GP services and we need to rethink that a bit , but have an accident ,a heart attack or stroke , a serious illness and they come up trumps every time in my personal experience . Yes that's right, it was a right wing Labour Goverment that passed the buck to the next genertion on PFI. The Tories have not changed it in 7 years so are eqully culpable for PFI. On Thatch, she decried any idea of privatising the Post Office, declaring it would be mad to do so, which Camron did, and May is somehere to the right of Ghengis Kahn and Cameron. The NHS is not currently viable and is likely to collapse next winter making privatistion inevitble if May wins. Yes, the NHS has an exposure to old folks returning which cannot be measured against, but already paid for through lifes long tax and NI payments in advance. So in terms of payments inwards the NHS has no exposure as it has already been paid, or at least the Exchecquor has, but have failed to fund the NHS properly for 30 years. Quality here in my experience is excellent, and I know folks that have pacemakers and hip relacements, knee replaements etc. Some go back to the UK for end of life care at the insistence of there families. Many also refuse and die here. One neigbour had bone cancer and refused to go back and died fairly quickly. The point is those that may call on the NHS at end of life have already paid for it. The Tories have loathed the NHS since its inception and this is there chance to kill it. You must of missed the continous reports of crisis levels throughout the winter in hospitals. They could not free beds for incoming patients because there was no paliative after care required to nurse a person back to good condition and health post critical intervention as a direct result of cuts to those service through Local Government settlements and no new funding over a 7 year period of Austerity, which was predicatable and predicted at the outset of Dumb and Dumbers coalition. It certainlydid not happen over night as is directly attributable to the disastrous policy of Austerity. We're never going to agree so I sincerely hope for you if you vote May some health care provision will provide for you after the General Election or you have sufficient resources for Private Health Care. On current funding and May mantra of 'no more money for the NHS' it will collapse this winter, then watch a neatly prepared plan for privatistion wheeled out on a trolley.

My daughter is a midwife and I can't see this happening. She doesn't come home moaning about imminent privatisation or a massive lack of resources or about anything much at all most of the time. Do you actually know anyone who works in the NHS who thinks that this is going to happen?
General Election? on 16:54 - Apr 18 with 2376 views | derbyhoop | It's a political masterstroke. Very simple explanation - in 2 parts. The Tories are 21 points ahead in the polls. The opposition is weak. It's a brilliant opportunity to ensure there is a Conservative government for the next 5 years, probably with a greatly enhanced majority. At the moment, she has a majority of about 12 (couldn't be a**ed to check the exact number). 2 years of complex Brexit negotiations would give the opposition together with the sensible wing of the Tory party too many opportunities to overturn May's wishes. And we all know her will should not be challenged. By anybody. The only thing I can see going wrong is if the 48% who voted Remain vote en masse for the anti-Brexit opposition party most likely to win the parliamentary seat. The chances of that happening across the country are minimal.

I agree .. Hurrah However there are other issues other than Brexit , all of the parties that could possibly create a grand anti brexit coalition are in the case of the SNP and Labour all for scrapping Trident and the Lib Dems 2015 manifesto says they would scale it down to one sub patrolling only in times of "tension" That may make a few people think our security with Trump, North Korea, Russia, and China,s activities recently .. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Bloody hell. That's the first time we agree on something in the last 2 years. I would also add that the downside ramifications of Brexit, e.g. higher inflation, companies (and jobs) relocating, will probably become more apparent as the year progresses, Therefore going to the country sooner rather than later, gives Mayhem a better chance of unchallenged rule.

The clear and obvious reason for the sudden call for an election is tha so many Conservative constituencies are being investigated (by the police) for spending irregulations. In most cases this would mean the results would be void and the Tory winners would have to stand again and might wipe out May's majority. [Post edited 18 Apr 2017 19:05]

I have watched BBC, Sky and listened to LBC and none have even mentioned the police investigations as a reason. A resounding win now in those constituencies without a battle bus visit would snuff that one out too

The fact that she has said 5 times she wouldn't do this is exactly why you know that the reason she is doing so now is narrow political advantage. As to why she has suddenly done so: CPS saying they are considering charging 30 individuals over cheating on expenses in last General Election. Enough seats involved to overturn her majority, all marginals, quite a lot LD facing (so no escape by playing the Corbyn card if there have to be by-elections.) Basically she's scared that otherwise she will be finalising Brexit one year before the scheduled election in 2020, with sh*t hitting the fan all over the place, and quite possibly a minority government or wafer-thin majority subject to Tory rebellion. Get in now while Labour are in the sh*t and buy herself two more years to get down the Brexit road.

Why is every media outlet and every non Tory MP I have heard interviewed today totally ignoring this angle . We are not talking about election fraud here just allocation of campaign expenses . How do you quantify the effect on the vote of a few thousand pounds in the wrong column . All of yhe votes were genuine . She wants a bigger majority and sees that conditions are favourable now ..and thats it IMO

I believe you that that is your opinion, but the CPS are in fact talking about election fraud, there is actually a possibility of 30 MP's losing their and/or the possibility of them being disqualified from being MP's even if the constituency results are upheld. It was announced today that all of the above are live issues and must now be closed out before the 8th June due to the newly-announced General Election. I have no idea, none of us have any idea what the Tories' motivation for calling a General Election now but it does seem at the very least fortuitous that this snap decision which was up until recently denounced as insulting to democracy will now lead to the end of any possibility of the Tories losing their majority due to the CPS's election fraud investigations and will also neatly truncate 30 investigations that could end up in criminal charges.

Bri, not that I don't believe you, but have you got any links giving further detail on this story? Assuming it's true, it not being reported in mainstream media is absolutely shocking. And it's shows beyond all doubt how the electorate's "opinions" are controlled by media outlets. Electoral fraud, by the governing party, in the U.K. should be a much bigger story than a snap election!
