Southampton V Ipswich Town The Verdict
at 10:04:53

Definite progress. We have the nucleus of a really good team. Shame that a fluke unstoppable defection took 2 points from us at the death.

It was always going to be tough coming up. Going up to 18th with a draw was an eye-opener.

We should be in with an excellent shout if we can field 12 players. I'm guessing you really mean Ramsdale and 2 from 3 CB's tho?

Awful match. A win though and good performances from several players so I can't complain.

Southampton V Manchester United The Verdict
at 13:06:49

I expected this season to be tough and am prepared for the team to be learning on the job in the early season. The initial team set up was exactly what we had all been requesting, barring Stephens getting an automatic pick, however in Martin's defence on this THB has been off form and ABK looked rusty against Cardiff.

We played really well first 30 mins in particular Midfield had the right balance between defence and attack, we were stopping Utd and turning them round.

Then came the penalty and again Stephens is missing, he should be organising and even as other captains do, disrupting the delay so that the pressure is eased for the penalty taker. Go and push Onana back FFS! But Jack is nowhere.

As you say the game deflated rapidly after that. Good to see Stewart getting a run out. If Archer can't take his chance, then Stewart needs to start ASAP.

Next game I hope we stick with current formation, just THB or ABK replacing Stephens.

In the first 30 minutes, there was real improvement over the performances in the first 3 PL games. I'm not getting too despondent as we knew we had to step up a level and, as they say, progress is not a straight line.

These games are win- win really, either someone on the fringes plays well and stands out, or, you lose and can concentrate on the real prize - staying up.

At least everyone seems to have watched the same game!

I can't get too upset until the squad is settled. We always start slow. Quite clear that some things need to change tho, got to trust RM to work on these like he did last season.

Southampton Nearing Cash Plus Player Transfer Deal
at 12:25:06

I like Charly but I struggle to think of occasions when he has actually done anything of real note in a game to justify that opinion. He clearly has a spark about him and I'm convinced is one for the future. Sorry to see him go but again like Mara, if the transfer fee helps to improve the squad, then it's for all parties benefit.

Southampton Still Have Two Irons In The Fire For A Goalkeeper

Either looks an upgrade. Although £8 million for a season looks crazy money for Ramsdale. Bijlow looks more suited to how we play.

Team Bijlow for me.

Sekou Mara Departs
at 10:42:44

If ever there was a player who you could see desperately needed game time to improve it was Sekou. Clearly a talented player and just starting to bulk up for the role. I would have preferred a loan out but if that wasn't on the cards then a move is probably best for all sides.

Best of luck Sekou.

James Ward Prowse To Be Allowed To Leave West Ham United

Where does he actually fit in our first team? Played as a DM but better as an attacking midfielder but we have several of those. Surely it's just the same old JWP conundrum good player but we don't know what his best position is,?

Southampton V Oxford United The Verdict
at 12:07:22

I'm not so down on McCarthy, however we need a settled back 4/5 in front of him and we need to accept he doesn't play well with his feet or he will struggle.

A lot of players clearly put on last night just to have a look at/ get some minutes.

As you say a lot to be learned last night. Which is the whole point of pre season.

Southampton Have Dortmund Centre Forward On Their Radar
at 13:23:30

Being in the PL is worth so much money that spending £100 million on players almost seems the only course if action if you want to try to reach critical mass and break out of the yo-yo model that some clubs seem to have accepted.

I agree a first choice keeper at least on loan for a season seems a necessity. However not seeing too much indication that this is even on the cards.

Must be some sales coming up to balance the books?

Southampton Ready To Break Transfer Record In Next Week

Selling Shea would be a bit of a risk. He is our only other specialist DM and we saw last season that Flynn can be a bit injury prone. Perhaps Nick's long held ambition for Jack Stephens to move into midfield is about to be fulfilled.
