🔴 Likely candidates for the Swans job
at 20:24 24 Feb 2025

The club will be acutely aware that their last three managerial appointments haven't exactly proven to be stellar ones.

It's vitally important that they get this next one right. If that means not rushing things, taking the time to look through all the reasons why the previous incumbents failed, understand and acknowledge why attendances have fallen and basically reconsider the thought processes that led us to appointing the likes of Martin and Williams in the first place, then so be it.

Sheehan has given them a bit of breathing space to do so.

The performance was just as important as the result on Saturday. Might well have been our best 90 minutes of the season. That Sheehan can raise the levels that much with the same players will probably convince the club that they don't have to rush into appointing a replacement.

Exemplified by surviving because of another team's points deduction a couple of years ago. They weren't good enough to stay up on their own merits yet still managed it.

A baked in shitstain on the Championship toilet bowl.

And a totally polar opposite approach from his predecessor if what I'm hearing is true.

Don't need to read anything into it. Sheehan discusses Joey's presence in his post match interview.

Leeds away is undoubtedly the hardest game we have left, closely followed by Sunderland. Escaping those places without a shoeing will be an achievement. If we can play like we did yesterday though we're capable of claiming points in our other four away games. There really isn't much between most of the teams outside the top three or four.

Our away form all season has been quite respectable. It's at home where we've struggled. Pick up 7-10 points from those games and that should be more than enough.

An important reality for those responsible for appointing our new manager

Absofrigginglutely.

Square pegs in square holes. Pick a style to suit what you have, not try to squeeze unsuitable players into the tactical model you've decided to play anyway.

Swans crush Blackburn : Was it just a coincidence ?

We could also be sensible about this and acknowledge that Sheehan made a deliberate point of mentioning how isolated Vipotnik has been in his post match interview instead of trying to maintain the fantasy that his struggles are entirely self inflicted. If we had been giving him anything like the support he had yesterday all season and he still wasn't cutting it then I'd probably be damning him also.

You may be right that he's ultimately not good enough, but I certainly don't blame him for his struggles under Williams any more than I blamed our defence for regularly conceding stupid goals under Martin because I understood that they weren't being coached very well.

Next few games will tell us a lot more. Fresh start for him. As indeed it is for all of our players.

There have been a lot of people desperate to write off basically all of the attacking players we've acquired under Williams, and some of those brought in just before.

The simple reality is that if you're forming any kind of definitive opinion of any of them based on the kind of nonsense LW has been serving up, then that's on you.

It may be the case that Yates, Vip, Bianchini, Eom or whoever will ultimately prove themselves to be lacking. The point is that none of them have had anything even remotely approaching competent management during their time here.

If I thought Grimes was a poor player I wouldn't loathe him half as much as I did. If I thought he was genuinely performing to the best of his ability like say, Fulton then I could get behind that.

Most of us understand however that he's capable of more than we ever saw from him on a consistent basis. A lot more. Problem is that we almost never saw it. The odd game here or there. One season under Potter. And that's it. Despite that his cheerleaders spent years declaring his essential status to our side.

Anyone miss him today?

Coventry are on a good run of form but it's already being noticed that they're not moving the ball as quickly as they used to. We'll see how highly they think of him when that good run of form stops.

Coaches and how they ruin players

If I'm being nit picky I'd have brought fresh legs on up front a bit sooner, but otherwise it was refreshing to see subs that actually made sense rather than complete lunacy.

Guardiola football is on the way out. The absolute last thing we need is more Martin/Williams possession obsessed sh*te or we're just going to get left behind.

Today was a perfect example of that. Nobody gives a sweet FA that we only had 46% possession. We did more with it at the right times than in games where we've dominated the ball. That's what matters going forward.

Nobody wants kick and rush, but pass and wait has failed. Time to move to a sensible mid point.

In April we play both Derby and Plymouth at home in the space of a few days. We play a critical role in deciding who survives, possibly including ourselves.

Those figures are pretty damning evidence against the Martin/Williams approach. May we never be subjected to it again.

Incidentally, my mate who I sit next to at the football works quite closely with an office in Coventry. Naturally they chat about the football now and again. Apparently they're really dominating possession at the moment but don't counter attack as quickly as they used to. They're not sure why.

If nothing else today seems to confirm that our biggest problem this season was not and never has been the squad. It's also strong evidence to support the idea that we're going to be just fine without Matt Grimes.

Must admit I was a little concerned when Vig tipped that header over early on but after that we grew into the game with confidence, pace and aggression, never letting them settle on the ball and working hard for each other. The tempo of passing and movement was also a massive upgrade on much of what we've seen before.

Who would have thought that just letting players play instead of chaining them into unnecessarily complex and tedious systems would pay dividends?

Swansea City : Ramsay out of next Swans head coach position ?
at 13:21 22 Feb 2025

We've paid out compensation for four of our last five managers. We did that despite there being plenty of out of work coaches in the game. I have a pretty hard time getting on board with the idea that cost is a major factor in who we choose to appoint.

You can argue about the quality. Certainly I wouldn't be claiming that the majority have been good appointments, but sometimes it seems like people are looking for stuff to grumble about even when history simply doesn't match up to it.

Yates at Derby
at 23:39 20 Feb 2025

Considering how poor Derby have been all season, it's remarkable how highly their fans rate Yates regardless. It's almost as if they believe that performances are just as valuable as goal tallies.

Certainly his Derby career casts into significant disrepute the kind of nonsense spewed about him by some of our own based on Luke Williams' incompetence when it comes to attacking players.
