Direction of our squad 10:05 - Feb 4 with 651 viewssdm1508

I think the approach of getting younger players in is a good one and hopefully will help us to go back to the model that we were for years. By a player at a cheap price, develop and then sell at a profit.

With players to come back from injury and the recent signings, I am starting to wonder what our first team and squad will look like next season. With Vale coming in we now have quite a few players in the attacking positions off the striker. We also have Dembele to come back. We are hopefully going to have a young, attacking forward line next year but I do wonder what Marti is building and who he potentially see's as surplus to requirements going forward. I do think in the summer, Andersen will go. Sadly he is well off the pace this year. I think Madsen might be gone to.

We have a nice dilemma in the fact that Morgan has come in and done well, probably ahead of schedule. I wonder if they see him as the deep lying midfield player next to Varane, who can pick a pass. Personally, despite his limitations, Field starts every game for me when fit. You can see he is slowly developing his attacking play.

A attacking trio of Chair, Dembele and Smyth/Vale looks good.

What is most important though and despite his faults, Nourry has decided on a playing and recruitment model that we will use in the long term. They are trying to recruit players, to play a particular style of football, one which Marti wants but at the same time you feel as though if Marti went, we finally would have the situation where we would recruit the manager based on the type of players we have and the type of football team we want to be

I’m pretty happy with the squad and the way we are recruiting. I’d like us to get Jimmy tied down to a 3-4 year deal though.

Of our best 11 last season, 3 have left (Begovic, Willock and Dykes/Amstrong), 2 out injured pretty much all season (colback and jcs) and 1 injured & out of form (Chair). I think to sit 14th is good achievement given all those changes. And especially to have done all that without Chair and JCS is remarkable, given their performances last season.

Yes I like this direction as well - clearly youth is the way to go certainly in terms of future development and sell on value. Although from a first team perspective you do still need a couple of older heads to guide the younger ones.

Focus on the 18-21 age group, hopefully it means we can be more ruthless in terms of who we keep and let go, and we're not stuck with those players aged 22 and older who clearly aren't going to make it at Championship level.

Poll: How old is everyone on here?

Did I also read somewhere, that young players (early 20's) that don't look like there are getting anywhere near the first team are probably going to be let go or sold? Stops us having young players who we constantly send out on loan and don't get anywhere near the first team.

I think with the way we are going we are going to have a very competitive first team squad. I wonder how much longer Steve Cook has on his contract? He is one of the older heads that will help guide the younger players and drive the standards. Saying that I thought Sam Field has done very well when he was captain and I think Marti said in an interview he is a player who see's being a manager one day. I think Sam tactically is very strong in terms of his understand and his almost like Marti's general in midfield. With this influx of younger players it will be interesting to see what our midfield and attack will look like next season. The risk we are taking with Vale and the fact we signed him whilst injured suggests to me, we see him as a first team starter. I think if we play 4-2-3-1 a three of him, Chair and Dembele would be pretty interesting, plenty of rotation. I think if we play 4-3-3 he could quite easily play in the advanced midfield role. Just harsh on Kieran Morgan, but what a player to bring off the bench. Or maybe Marti sees him in Sam Fields role and developing play for a slightly deeper position.

Nice problems to have though. Starting to show some continuity, and long term thinking in our recruitment.
I know the new Brazilian left back is going into the development squad to start, but they way it was worded, if felt more like to get him up to speed with English football etc.

I actually now wouldn't mind us finding a way to sign Edwards if at all possible. I did think if Dunne went, the money might be used to do that. Steve Cook doesn't have much longer to go and I do worry about JCS, and if he can't get fit regularly again does the club look to move him on. Edwards and Morrison at the back, would work I think
