Defensive reinforcements. 11:19 - Jun 28 with 4445 viewsDoudou87

It's clear based on our defensive record from last season we need defensive reinforcements.

Centre back is my main concern especially with injury prone JCS being the only senior player to partner Jimmy Dunne. A player I would like to see given a chance is Deon Woodman, did very well at Dulwich Hamlets, which is a combative league for a defender, great way to gain experience of mens football. He'd definitely benefit from another year on loan but if our finances are that tight we might need to look to our youth. Gubbins has never done anything to suggest he's good enough, alternatively we look at the lower leagues or dip into the free agents market. Few names below that come to mind.

CB
Jack O'connell (Free- think he'd be on too high a salary)
Lloyd Jones (Free - Cambridge player of the season)
Mads Juel Andersen (Barnsley, probably can't afford him!)

RB
Fankaty Dabo (Free - Pace and power)
Junior Tchamadeu (Colchester young right back for the future)

LB
George Cox (Free- almost signed him last season, apparently out of contract now!)
Josh Ruffels (Free - Experienced defender good back up for Paal)
Adam Lewis (Free -was good at Newport before picking up a hamstring injury)

Poll: Preferred rumoured CB

I must admit my knowledge of the lower divisions is pretty poor. Two who i do know that could be worth looking at are

Terry Taylor, DM who has learnt his trade in L1 who happens to be free and Regan Poole(free again) CB who was player of the season for both the seasons he was their.

Deffinately agree we need competition at full back and cant understand why we havent gone after Cox yet as he was on our radar a few years back.

I'd be very surprised if Ainsworth didn't try to bring Chris Forino from Wycombe

I'm amazed not a single person has mentioned Balogun given he has appeared in many of the training videos. Yes, I know he had a bad last season through whatever you may want to believe but he would be cheap and bar the horrendous finish to his campaign, his early stuff allowed us to get up rather high in the table. Do not be surprised when he is signed.

I think you may acquire a better knowledge of lower divisions in a few seasons.
Sorry…..🥴

I won't be surprised but I will be disgruntled. He will have to work pretty damn hard to gruntle this observer.

'What do we want? We don't know! When do we want it? Now!'

I think you'll find it's ungruntled.

But I agree - plus any hint of disapproval and you'll be getting a 10 minute lecture off him on how hard things are and how sincere he is about those things.

Then you'll have to report to Heston on the Monday to hear it all again with studio lights and full make-up - make-up which you will be required to provide yourself.

I'd like news of a good hungry right-back - maybe one of the Colombians.

Regan Poole R/B from Lincoln would be a very good signing. His contract is up and he’s free to go. No rumours just yet but must surely be on GA’s radar given his links with Lincoln.

Don't think there will be many signings but we will take our full allocation of 5 loans.

I’d heard that name mentioned as well.
And I still think Balogun will end up staying.
I’d sign Cox and push Paal further forwards personally.

Think he may prefer Tafozolli he’s 31 but still got a bit left in the tank. He’s a unit tbf and Forino is only early twenties I think so still early days for him.

Clive did wonder when people would start asking about him.

I won't be surprised to see him sign and I will not be surprised when he and JCS again contribute no more that 30 games between them. If we sign him, that's two CBs we need - no way is Woodman or Gubbins going to cut it alongside Jimmy Dunne.

Signing Drewe means that we should not expect another RB in - Kakay first choice, Drewe backup *gulp*. Another one would be seen as excessive.

Not seen Nico in the training videos and am hoping he left silently alongside Les because otherwise, people, there's our back up LB.

Can we go out yet?
Poll: What would you take for Willock if a bid comes this month?

Can't see us signing another RB - Ozzy and Aaron it is! On our budget, three would be excessive...

True, unless Aaron goes out on loan

If we're still using a 'B' team, then I'd like to think players like Drewe, SDM and Jude-Boyd are being retained with that in mind, with a view to them training/being around the first team to come in as injury cover.

RB has to be a priority position, with Kakay being used as a utility player to cover LB, RB and CB when needed.

I know budget limitations and all, but I'd like to see us pick up some of these developing, almost-there talents from L1 and fringes of other teams for whom the move to us IS the challenge and goal for them.

I thought he looked class early doors but I don't think he has managed to play over 30 games in a single season. For 35yr old that's a worrying stat and just can't rely on him.

Woodman may or may not turn out to be any good, but he's definitely going to need a loan somewhere above Dulwich Hamlet's level before stepping up to the Championship.

Went to a Hamlet game last season, and the best defender on the pitch was a noticeably overweight Sam Magri, formerly of this parish, which should probably be instructive.

Balogun is fine if he can actually stay fit for any period of time. However, based on his record over the past few years that's an enormous if.

Even when he was fit at Rangers they would spend most games with 75% possession so he hardly would have been overworked. I remember being at a Celtic game v Dundee back in the 90s and Tom Boyd looked like prime Franco Baresi because they were so dominant.

I went to a couple of Wycombe games as my mate lives there and has a ST and I was pretty impressed by Forino, especially given he'd just returned from injury. Was comfortably their best defender. And as you say still young so I think he's on an upward trajectory

Leon Balogun will definitely sign a 1 year deal 'when fit'. I'd be staggered if he didn't. Don't believe they'd have him in training if this hadn't already been discussed with him and plausibly even agreed.

I'm sure he'll manage to look good and fit and willing until September, get his contract, then play less than 15 games all season. He's made a career of it and I think he's managed to pull the wool over GA's eyes.
