Rams Olympic Update: Down To The Wire For OZ & U.S
Rams Olympic Update: Down To The Wire For OZ & U.S

Both Rams players involved at the Beijing Olympic Games were again in action on Sunday in the second round of their respective group stages.

Ruben Zadkovich was moved to right back in a defensive formation for Australia as they took on defending champions Argentina. A backs to the wall performance nearly saw the Olyroos steal a point as they withstood fierce attacks from a start studded Argentinean team that included the likes of Messi and Riquelmi.

Unfortunately the dam finally broke in the 76th minute when Lavezzi Ezequiel shot truly from close range after desperate defending failed to clear the danger.

Zadkovich had a serviceable game making some very timely interceptions in dangerous positions when Australia was under heavy attack. He also managed a few shots in the dying stages when the Olyroos began pushing forward looking for an equalizer that never came, the match finishing 1-0.

The Australians face the Ivory Coast in their final group game on Wednesday and a win would see them progress to the next stage if Argentina win or draw with Serbia.

I think all Aussie football fans would like to see a bit more tactical flair from manager Graham Arnold whose game plans have been as underwhelming as many of his squad selections. After already losing his position as Socceroos number one last year, he will be under heavy fire should the Olyroos not progress past the group stage.

The other Rams player taking part in the Games Benny Feilhaber, again was used as a substitute for the U.S in their game against the Netherlands.

The Americans looked to have the game sewn up at 2-1 when Feilhaber entered the match on 80 minutes. That was until a last gasp equalizer in the 93rd minute allowed the Netherlands to grab a point as the game ended at 2-2.

The U.S should progress to the quarter finals with either a draw or win from their final game against Nigeria who they are tied with in their group on 4 points.

Medal favorites Argentina, Brazil and Italy have confirmed progression after wins in the second round. Japan and Honduras became the first two teams to officially drop out of the race for a medal, with final group matches to be played on Wednesday.

Good luck to both Rams as they attempt to book quarter final appearances!!
