Yet another Rams player with Preston connections, Ben joined his hometown club as a trainee and came through the youth system, being awarded his first professional contract by current Rams manager, Billy Davies.

Having impressed in the reserves, Ben was allowed out on loan to Kendal Town and Tranmere Rovers during the 2006/7 season to gain some first team experience and made his league debut while with the Rovers.

Ben and fellow keeper Lewis Price joined the Rams as replacements during the summer of 2007 when Lee Camp and Lee Grant were both allowed to leave the club.
