Tony Mowbray had a very young Sunderland team playing exciting stuff last year and early this year. if the club wants to bring through some young players that's a good option. |

attacking subs and playing on the front foot at 1-1 and 2-1 when the opposition were clearly committing too many men forward and vulnerable was great to see. in previous years they would have just thrown on Naughton and tried to get a point. [Post edited 7 Oct 2023 17:22]

just an observation, not about this specific guy, but why do the academy kids never seem to get a shot in the first team anymore until they're past 20 years old? you see other teams increasingly giving chances to 17-18 year olds, but here it seems like they're always a couple years older. just not good enough?
players can always improve but 21 is old for a prospect. see that a lot. |

"he doesn't fit in Duff's system" is a fairly ridiculous take only 3 games in when it's still not overtly clear what his system is, or how the player could adapt, but i think this is a fair outcome. imo Yates was always signed to be the Piroe replacement.

the money should be spent on a central defender and another winger or left sided player.
think Yates, Kukharevych and Cullen is a good enough striking situation. and then could Morgan be bedded in if needed? don't know much about him but he seems to be getting rave reviews. |

so i haven't been paying close attention to this, but what's his story?
cautiously optimistic but the fact he doesn't have senior experience (only 1 game?) is slightly troubling if he's going to be dropped right into a starting place. |

i think i'd rather a bad preseason friendly so the manager can have a better idea of weaknesses. i think this can only serve as a positive.
if things aren't looking more cohesive by the final friendly and needs aren't being addressed in the transfer market then you start to worry |

Will never begrudge a player or manager for moving on. That said, the perception of Martin right now is strongly colored by the stretch at the end of the season when there was absolutely no pressure on him. I have no idea if he's the kind of manager who can get a result when he needs to. I think his first 10 games at Southampton will tell us more about what kind of manager he is than the last 2 years. |

in fairness, there will be about 22 teams having the same thought right now given that there may not be a "great" team in the division this year and lots of parity.
realistically anybody who goes on a long run of form could make it. i question whether there is sufficient depth in this squad. as in most years, the teams with the most resources (usually from parachute payments) will start to separate themselves around the turn of the year. however, the world cup this year is an unknown element. it's really hard to make a guess at this point. |
