New Year’s Frey delight for resurgent Rangers – Report
at 07:30 3 Jan 2025

Alternatively, they had too many presents or too much Christmas pudding?

The coldest/wettest you've ever been at a match
at 19:27 2 Jan 2025

Ah. I have remembered the coldest one. That was at Swindon, too, on 12 January 1963. The big freeze of 1962-63 had started at Christmas 1962 and the thaw did not arrive until early March 1963 (off at a tangent, but, how prepared are you for another winter like that?).

The pitch was covered in hard-packed, frozen snow. At the 'warm'-up, it was clear that the Rangers players could hardly stand up. Our hosts, however, had been taken by their manager Bert Head, to the 'Bata' shoe shop - to buy basketball boots - on the morning of the match. They were much better able to stand up and play.

Only a tiny handful of games were played that Saturday. This one should not have been. But it was and Swindon won 5-0.

I had recently moved to a school in Swindon. That Saturday was miserable. So was Monday morning.

Not sure about coldest but the wettest was probably on Stratton Bank at the County Ground, for Swindon v QPR, in the League Cup, in 2008. We won and I remember that Ledesma revelled in the conditions, but, there was no cover and it chucked it down for the whole match.

I suspect that Jack would have thought that, with the added time, that would be plenty of time to pick up a red card

Yes. The test for the Rs is how they manage the game, 3-1 up with about 15 minutes to go. Saito and Madsen coming on to help - we hope.

Jimmy needs to be careful, card-wise.

Injuries

Our best team ever (1975/76) suffered occasional injury problems, but, with poorer pitches, a heavier ball, tougher tackling and only one substitute allowed, it was pretty consistent in its line-up.
Why, with the facilities available, the huge number of substitutes allowed, so many tackles penalised, the better pitches and the advances in medical science, do we (and other teams) have so many injury problems?

Marti - Norwich

'One game at a time', of course, but when we look at our last nine matches, we can see four wins, four draws and one defeat; 12 goals scored, seven conceded, 16 points gained. If we were to we maintain that form until the end of the season, we would end up with 64 points. These figures guarantee nothing regarding the matches ahead, but they do, at least, put in perspective that Christmas Pudding performance at Swansea.

Thank you. I thought that it probably was. So, which airline would like to pay a fortune to advertise on the roof of the Bhatia Stand and the Stanley Bowles stand?

After Boxing Day and after a radical re-shuffle to cope with injuries, it surely tells us something that so many of us are actually disappointed with a 1-1 draw at Norwich!!
Well done Rangers. Yes, it could have been three points but we appreciate that effort that went into that (and Marti's management of the resources).

Did we use to do that (ad for KLM?), or, was it Brentford's roof that carried an ad?

QPR v Ride A White Swansea Match Thread
at 10:18 27 Dec 2024

I was not there. I watched the club stream. So, forgive me if I am missing something.
I think certain things can be forgiven. Almost certainly, there was a game plan to let Swansea pretend to be Barcelona, dispossess them and attack on the break. Already harder to do than usual, because of Steve Cook's absence, this was badly disrupted by Morrison's late withdrawal. The last-minute patching up meant that Swansea found themselves able to do more than play their possession game - they were actually able to threaten our goal. But, we did win the ball from time to time. Trouble was, we promptly gave it away; so often that I think Swansea concluded that we were no threat at all and they could enjoy themselves. We seemed to have noone to play the ball out to and that reinforced the 'defence versus attack' mentality. There was no 'transition'.
For spells in the second half, we were far more positive. A change of personnel made a difference and I imagine, so did the team talk. But, it was to no avail. We were never going to climb out of a 3-0 hole.
My guess is that, before Norwich, a lot of thought will be given to how to make the best of a damaged defence (Marti earns his keep here) and how to be more threatening on the break. Chair and Frey will surely start the game?

Agree about the risk to SC's career, Philo, but it need not be quite as bad. Didn't Ebere Eze rupture an Achilles when he joined Crystal Palace?

Was Prestons goal totally against the morals of the game
at 19:49 21 Dec 2024

It was correct to play on. Players today feign injury so often that an attacking player might have assumed that there was nothing wrong with Steve Cook.
Perhaps there should be a weekly TV programme featuring the players who had fallen clutching their heads, when the head had not been touched and the others who cry out and fall around when they get the slightest knock (or even no knock at all).

End of an Era?

It is exactly what most of us would want if we were living there. Football fans, en masse, do not always appreciate what other people think of them. Some do, but do not care. It will be those who triggered the gating-off.

Saving a team from relegation in the Championship is different from saving one from relegation in the Premier League. Surely, Southampton need someone with a track record in the PL?
