Promotion Playoffs: an idea from the IPL 08:43 - May 27 with 1281 views | wimborne_dale | Cricket's IPL has four teams in the playoffs. 1st plays at home to 2nd 3rd plays at home to 4th The winner of 1 v 2 goes straight into the final The loser of 1 v 2 plays at home to the winner of 3 v 4 and the winner of that game goes into the final. That way there is a greater advantage to finishing higher up. The top 2 get 2 bites of the cherry whereas the bottom 2 must win 2 games to get to the final. This would work best in the football league playoffs if each leg had just one game thereby giving home advantage to the team finishing higher up. The final could still be at Wembley but I would like to see penalty shoot outs dispensed with. If it's a draw after extra time, the team with the higher league position would take priority.

Promotion Playoffs: an idea from the IPL on 08:58 - May 27 with 1265 views | BartRowou | I've had a similar idea for years but slightly more radical: fifth play sixth at fifth's; the winner plays fourth at fourth's; the winner of that plays third at Wembley. 5 v 6 4 v 5/6 3 v 4/5/6 The argument against it would of course be a financial one which is the first consideration in any modern English football thinking.

Promotion Playoffs: an idea from the IPL on 09:56 - May 27 with 1222 views | TVOS1907 | What's wrong with the current system? The best 2/3 teams in the league get promotion. The next four get a second chance. Everyone knows the rules at the outset and it's worked well for 26 years (albeit with slight changes along the way). EDIT: And the current system keeps more teams interested up to the final weeks, leading to improved crowds. [Post edited 1 Jan 1970 1:00]

It was but that's not what Wimborne has opined. Back in the day, the play-offs involved a team who had just missed relegation and three teams who had just missed promotion. The winners went/stayed in the higher division.

This is the model currently used in Scotland (and if the SPL agrees, it will apply in that division too, as of next season).

3 sat around for three weeks since the end of the season. 5/6 bang in match form/confidence for the final after two win. 20/20 cricket can be played on consecutive days so the original format is ok, for football, as above, being straight through to the final is not necessarily an advantage.

Promotion Playoffs: an idea from the IPL on 18:05 - May 27 with 1048 views | ColDale | how about if a game is as dull as today's game was, everyone watching at home can vote via the red button and ensure that the team finishing 18th gets a reprieve instead.

Agree with you, a club in 9th, 10th with a month to go still feel they have something to play for. Pre playoffs the season was over for those clubs
