At some point in the game SKY put up a stat I hadn't seen before and it blew my mind - can't quite remember the specifics but it basically had us as 2nd or 3rd in the League for shots and chances created and bottom for chance conversion at something like 6% - it summed our season up so far in a very telling way. Woeful.
That said I don't think I've ever seen so many of our shots blocked before - it seems like every game there are at least 5 good shots that end up being blocked and not even deflected - no luck with anything going our way. I've only managed to watch on TV but I've been incredulous at the amount of times tackles and half blocks have fallen incredibly kindly to the opposition in all the games as well. Feels like the hex is back somehow.

Mind you a lot of those were in the seconds before Alfie’s goal at Sheff Wednesday. .
Agree with you though. We are having a huge amount of shots blocked and not benefiting from kind deflections, whereas defensively many of our deflections seem to result in opposition goals as per again last night.

Another stat that emphasises how unlucky we've been. Amazing that a football club can be so unlucky for so many seasons.

The main theory being because we're behind so much teams are set in defence more. Which does match with the single digit percentage of time we've been finding ourselves ahead.

Many times we also seem to want to take a touch rather than hit it first time. A confidence thing I assume.

We are behind and we move the ball so bloody slowly in the build up

Not helped by lack of strikers with the pace to finish chances. How many times did Smyth get crosses around the 6 yard line, but nobody was arriving to stick it in the net. I remember Beckham saying that if he put crosses in like that, he expected the striker(s) to bust a gut getting to them.

There's no hex. What you've neglected to mention was the reason Sky brought up this stat. They explained that most of our shots were from distance, hence the low conversion rate. This was particularly evident in yesterday's match. The game stats show a decent number of shots on target, particularly in the first half, however the majority were from distance and didn't really trouble Coventry's keeper. Chair, in particular, had 3 or 4 efforts from outside the box.

Saw something that said the chances of a goal from a shot outside the box was about 4%: seems about right. Chair in particular specialises in weak long distance shots that end up safely in the goalkeeper’s hands.

[CURSE intensifies]
Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

Some poor finishing and many good chances spurned.
But yes agree. Apart from the last minute scramble put in by Alfie, the blocks seem to be multiple and the ball not quite falling right for us this season.
Definitely noticeable !!
The so called "rub of the green" not falling for us at all. I heard this bloke called John Terry decided he doesn't like our club and has put a voodoo curse on the club as a consequence.
Not saying I am ITK, but if you know, you just know !! 🙃
I would say this has more to do with the type of shots we're having rather than a broad 'unlucky' brush. We missed a couple of great chances against Portsmouth but other than that have really struggled to create clear cut chances all season. THe vast majority of our shots (I'd imagine) are from outside of the box when the opposition has 6 defenders between the ball and goal.
We've found it almost impossible to stretch the opposition, we rarely counter, we haven't played many balls into space ahead of attackers. The vast majority of out attacks are slow, deliberate and in front of a structured and organised defensive shape.
That pretty much is QPR right now.
That also probably aids our poor defending, because we end up with 10 players in the opposition half so often, moving the ball so slowly, across the lines rather than through and between them which leaves a huge space behind us and we end up defending as individuals desperately throwing themselves into tackles as we're attacked at pace.
It also probably partly explains why Celar has looked so weak. He's basically never had the ball in the box in any sort of space.
I was pretty delighted with Varane's performance on Tuesday as he played 3 or 4 very simple yet clever balls between the lines. One a simple header that set Chair or Saito free down the left. One excellent pass to Smyth between the centre half and the right back. This for me is exactly what we've been missing. He was decent off the ball on Tuesday but showed flashes of brilliance on it. If he can keep that up I think he could become a very important player for us. It was also really, really nice to see him embracing Morgan at the end. My opinion on Varane is rapidly changing for the better.

In Chair's case the percentage will be low because the opposition know he's our only genuine goal threat and the entire stadium knows what he wants to do when he picks up the ball outside of the box. The boy really deserves to be playing in a better side where he won't be marked by 3 players.

Genuine goal threat...marked by 3 players...lol
Before Willock returned last season I think he'd registered 2 goals in maybe 30 odd games,
Just can't understand why Real Madrid hav'nt come in for him, for his pin-point accuracy in finding the 1st defenders head with everyone of his corners....
My favourite ever post on this forum is 'Chair does'nt pass to our other players because he does'nt rate them'....absolutely brilliant bit of mind reading.
