Surely if Jones' problem was his lack of PL experience, then how is appointing a guy with no experience at all supposed to work? Sometimes clubs make the mistake of appointing someone with no managerial experience because he was a top player. But Selles didn't even have any playing experience either. The only reason Selles was appointed was because SR made a complete fvck up of their attempts to sign Marsch when they suddenly insisted on a 6 month contract. No decent manager would have taken the job on a 6 months contract so you're left with people who aren't really managers at all.

Im not sure Marsch was the man. after all what did he achieve at Leeds ? just about kept them up last year and then in the relegation scrap this year. If we had signed him to a long term deal and we had still gone down, then everyone would be moaning about the club doing this and having to pay off another manager

Marsch was a desperation attempt at getting a "name" in as much as we'd heard of him and he'd worked in the PL. But as you say Nick, certainly didn't set the world alight at Leeds and got the sack for the same reasons as we've had 3 managers. At the bottom of the league and likely to go down It would have been another mistake that at least we missed this time Splash the cash this summer, but on a proven, experienced manger

I'm not sure Marsch was the right man either. That wasn't the point I was making. The point was that NO decent manager would take the job on just a 6 month deal and clearly if that's all they offered to Marsch who was their main target, then that's all they'd be offering to any new manager. That left them with Selles as the only option because they'd boxed themselves in to a corner and he was the only way out. All this after giving Jones a multi year contract. With geniuses like this in the boardroom, it's no surprise we are where we are. p.s. wouldn't be at all surprised to see Marsch in charge next season anyway. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Where has it all gone wrong? on 13:56 - May 11 with 4488 views | MattFinish | Where has it all gone wrong?? I don't agree with the consensus of people who say that our squad isn't good enough. I think with a couple of additions our squad is easily good enough to finish in the top half. It's been clear for the last three or four seasons, that our two problem positions are striker and goalkeeper and we’ve failed to solve those positions. We've spaffed £284m on players over the last 4 seasons and failed to get a decent striker or keeper (yes we had an interested Ings for 1 season and a disillusioned Ings for another season). If you look at other clubs strikers over the last four years you can see how hamstrung we have been. Apart from 2019/ 20 season when Danny Ings scored 22 goals our strike force has been appalling and our keepers no better and this is the reason we're where we are now. Our current striker's lack of mobility, ability to hold the ball, ability to find space or a dangerous position and more importantly ability to put half chances away (or even full chances) means our midfield or defence frustrate the crowd by passing sideways or backwards because there are no other options Leaving Tall Paul aside because he hasn't been given the chance to show what he can do, the following is the scoring record of our current strike force and in particular Che Adams 2019/20 - Che scored 4 goals in 30 games. Of the relegated teams Pukki scored 11 in 36 for Norwich, Deeney scored 10 in 27 for Watford and Wilson scored 8 in 35 for Bournemouth 2020/21 — Che scored 9 goals in 36 games. Of the relegated teams Pereira scored 11 in 33 for WBA, McGoldrick scored 8 in 35 for Sheff Utd and Cordova-Reid scored 5 in 33 for Bournemouth 2021/22 - Che scored 7 goals in 30 games. Of the relegated teams Pukki scored 11 in 37 for Norwich, Dennis scored 10 in 33 for Watford and Cornet scored 9 in 26 for Burnley 2022/23 - Che has scored 5 goals in 28 games. Of the teams in the relegation fight Barnes has scored 12 in 31 for Leicester, Rodrigo has scored 12 in 28 for Leeds, Maddison has scored 10 in 27 for Leicester, Johnson has scored 8 in 35 for Forest, McNeil has scored 7 in 33 for Everton, Awoniyi has scored 6 in 24 for Forest and Iheanacho has scored 5 in 26 for Leicester. Apart from Che, Adam Armstrong has weighed in with 3 goals in 4 seasons and Mara has one league goal for Saints. Broja scored six in 22 games on loan. This means that in the last four seasons the strikers we have at the club now have contributed 29 goals in 180 games between them which equates to 1 goal every 6.25 games. We'll all have our opinions but I think that the view that all would have been ok with a different striker is the most simplistic view of the lot. I could give you chapter and verse on our appalling defending, our stupid tactics, our lack of experience and leadership, our very questionable fitness etc, but instead of all that, just look at Monday night. We conceded 4 goals to a pretty poor Forest side. What do you want this striker to do, score 5 goals every game? We cannot afford top level strikers because we can't afford their wages. Even the likes of Ings will be tempted elsewhere. We will have mid level strikers at best, so the idea that a top level striker will arrive and cure our problems was always a fantasy. The only way for a club like Saints to survive in the PL is to be a well managed side that is more than the sum of its parts, not less than, as we are today. We need to be a side that can get results with the likes of Che playing at centre forward because, apart from brief cameos from rising stars, that's all we will ever have. As for this list of strikers you give like Pukki, Calum Wilson etc, yes they maybe better finishers than Che, but what good did that do for those relegated teams? How did it help them? Did it make the difference between them staying up and going down?

Where has it all gone wrong? on 08:41 - May 12 with 4223 views | davidargyll | Very interesting stats about strikers. But every team that gets relegated always has a dreadful GA record. And that is really where our problems spring from. Yes Bazunu is pretty average, but good GKs always have a top defence in front of them, which we simply don’t. As for a lack of GF, I am sure that the confidence of a forward is only improved if he knows he’s got a solid back line behind him. Whereas it drops several notches if he sees that he’s always having to fight that much harder because we invariably go one or two goals behind.

Agree with what you say, but the style of football has contributed to that statistic also - the defensive style, dropping deep, playing the ball sideways and back, the keeper feeding it out slow from the back. Strikers hardly getting a sniff of the ball in the opposition's half and not only that, quite often losing the ball in our own half while pissing about with it sideways/back and putting the defence and keeper under immediate pressure, resulting in panic. I can remember Ings' frustration when Hassenhutl changed it all about and he was hardly seeing the ball...not any different now.

Absolutely. When I saw Marsch being touted as a replacement, the first thing that came to mind was what has he actually achieved? Not a lot is the answer to that, and he probably never will. The same with Gerrard, he did well with Rangers (in a similar context, Elynoussi was a star at Celtic) but did nothing at Villa in one of the toughest leagues in the world. If the club were looking at a short term fix to get themselves out of trouble until the end of the season, I'm sure the vastly experienced Sam Allardyce would have been happy to step in and may well have saved the situation. Problem is whoever gets mentioned for the job will very likely have some sort of downside.. ie Marsch or Gerrard for their previous sackings, questionable records. Then you could go to Chris Wilder.. Experienced in the Championship, got a similar sized club promoted back to the Prem, but a mixed record since. Do we try our luck with an up and coming manager like Dahl Tomasson... yet to fail but does he have the experience to change the mindset at the club where there is a culture of defeat? It's a bloody lottery!

Correct, as we all knew last summer, Saints needed a proven striker to improve the team. We should have kept Romeu and made him captain. Forster should have been the GK we retained or we should have signed Pope. We also needed an experienced leader at the back. So that's 3 signings we needed, plus keeping a few of the good ones we already had. Instead we signed 6 inexperienced young players, and sold the decent players we did have (Romeu / Forster). I wasn't at all surprised, after such appalling decisions when they appointed Jones as Ralph's replacement. Cheap, cheap, make a profit, develop, improve, data driven boll@x. The problem is the decisions coming from the very top. It's no surprise to me we are down.

Nothing wrong with that but when those youngsters are thrown in the first team with untried erratic managers it was always going to end in relegation. Selles and Jones were terrible appointments but as in any organisation the buck stops with the people making those decisions to appoint them. Personally I couldn’t give a toss about being in the Premier League. It’s pointless competing against clubs owned by oil rich states.

Where has it all gone wrong? on 11:54 - May 14 with 3413 views | Monksway | Rather than this year's recruitment of youngsters with potential the problem surely lies with the quality and development of those players that have been here a few years. If Forster, Bednarek, Stephens, Romeu, Redmond,Tella were to go then McCarthy, Perraud, Salisu, Diallo, Elyanoussi, Adams, Djnepo and Adam Armstrong had to step up and become first choice with JWP and KWP. This would have enabled Baz, Bella -Ketchup, Lavia, Larios, Edozie and Mara to settle in and play the odd games from the bench with Walcott and Maitland- Niles as some extra experience. Surely given his experience Caletta- Car should have been Salisu's regular partner. Adams and Adam Armstrong should have developed in the same way as Watkins, Benrama and Bowen in theory.
