Essentially all the teams in PL play a possession game with a build from back and a side or backwards pass if player looks like losing ball. This results in a lot of passes and high possession. Ralph had Saints play that way. But since Jones -it has really dropped. Examples - Brighton 590 passes(66% possession), Saints 254 ( 34%), next game Fulham 590(62%),Saints(38%). Saints did better versus NF, NF 180(38%), Saints 365passes (62%). The Man City-Chelsea game had 471 passes Chelsea and 548 Man City.
Bazuna on every goal kick or punt kicks upfield and Central Defenders kick low passes all straight to feet of opposition who build from back.

There is a time to go long, we all know that. But like you say not every time the ball comes to you. I consider this to be a confidence thing. The back three don't want the ball for fear of making a mistake (which they will sooner or later) and the keeper knows this so just bypasses them. The ball comes straight back, the manager has no clue, heads drop when they look to the line for help from the coaches & all they see is NJ throwing his arms in the air. NJ is a puppy in a dog fight and will inevitably lose horrifically. | |

Absolutely true. Not sure it's entirely NJ, I think Sport Republic and the new coaches were pushing "more direct!! on Ralph. Really frustrating as in JWP and Ori we had two players that could really maintain possession. Add Lavia and we had a potentially really strong midfield playing 4-3--3. We are now playing championship football in the EPL with the inevitable consequences. | | | |

Possession does not win you matches.
Premier lge stats suggest that teams that dominate Possession do not necessarily win the matches.
Teams with less quality are happy to let the opposition have Possession, invite them to come forward then hit them on the break.
A very good example was Brentford stuffing Liverpool this week, Liverpool had approx 76% Possession & lost 3-1.
Ralph had Saints dominating Possession but we were unable to score & win games.
Exceptions to this are teams with real quality like Man City that can keep the ball for fun & still win games. | | | |
