Retraining on 21:42 - Jan 20 by fbreath | I was aircraft techie in RAF on VC 10 regards repairing/servicing them bit like working at Heathrow airport. Every so often we would have to do ground crew duty, marshalling in aircraft to their stand, connect ground power when they stopped etc. The only thing 5he firemen did apart from sleep, paint white lines and polish their engines was deal with smokey brakes. There would be about 12 of them around one aircraft all excited that they could take control of the situation. Roll out their hoses try and boss everyone around then put it all away and go back to their normal routine At Brize Norton if there was a fire somewhere on camp they would have to stand down when the civvy fire brigade turned up |
I am ex RAF MT driver. I was about to say that we weren't that much different. But I don't remember not being busy. Worked bloody hard. Boring tour down the Falklands where I drove the ambulance for 2 months and refuelled Tornados for the other two months. We have just started a family now, two kids. My boy is 2 years old. As long as I got air in my lungs he will not be joining the military who are controlled by todays politicians. My son would be the first of 5 generations in my family that I know of to break the military mould.

Do you have a big yellow helmet? If so I’ve got some anti fungal cream left over from the athletes foot incident.

Retraining on 16:46 - Jan 21 with 1271 views | BarrySwan | In regards to airport firefighters. During the Summer of 1997 I took on a 4 month temporary summer shift as a baggage handler at Rhoose airport as work was generally slack during the Summer in my self employed trade. Obviously the whole point of the firecrews is that hopefully they will be never called into action but clearly have to be on standby for every landing and takeoff and quite rightly so. However it must be said that the firecrew at Rhoose spent an inordinate amount of their time working out on the weights etc, the odd practice speeding dash parallel to the runway and assisting wheelchair travellers onto the plane. There was one chap on the full time baggage team who had transferred over to the fire crew when a vacancy occured but had transferred back after only a couple of months describing his time over the other side of the runway as the most boring time that he had ever spent in his working career and that he couldn't take the monotony of doing nothing or the clank of lifting gym weights from the rest of the crew for any longer. I suppose on balance that I would prefer that they carry on with the old body building and crosswords rather than have to deal with an emergency.

Your right of course. Might have been an option 30 years ago, not now. It's not an issue for me, however, if I had my time again, that's what I'd do.👠

A test? F*ck me the only test you get there is how to carry the same spanner / piece of paper / light bulb, for 12 hours whilst looking busy. The tie breaker is how quick can you fall asleep in the messroom Craig Bridgeman and Neil Dummer nagged me for 10 years to work for them, and Mike Wixey asked me twice.
