Swansea City 1 Wigan Athletic 2 15th April 1989, Att 3,800 13:59 - Apr 15 with 2089 viewsjackharris

The Day I will never forget, standing on the East Terrace with big metal fencing in front of me, listening (on my Sony Walkman with add on radio) to the BBC’s coverage of Nottingham Forest vs Liverpool in the FA Cup Semi Final from Sheffield. I just listened and cried.

Very proud to be voted Planet Swans Poster of the Year 2017 by my fellow posters. Especially on a site that nearly had 20 million impressions last year.

Was on the North Bank JH. Had recently bought a Walkman with a radio. First and last time I took a radio to a game. Felt physically sick that evening. Still haunts me if I walk past the memorial in the city in front of St George’s Hall. Was a lovely warm day on holiday from university. A horrible memory for us all

I was on the North Bank too. News filtered through that the game had been abandoned and everyone assumed there had been a riot.

Got back to Neath train station after the game and bought the Sporting Post to check the scores in all the other games as always, and the headline read along the lines of "35 dead in cup semi".

Something I'll never forget.

Initially Radio 2 (which for younger posters used to have the sport on Saturday) were reporting as a disturbance caused by Liverpool fans. By half time it was apparent this was not a riot but a tragedy and a tale of negligence and incompetence. A great shame it took 25 years for the truth to come out. I noticed last night on MOTD2 that Kenny Dalgliesh embraced Margaret Aspinall ( campaigner who lost her son) after Salah's goal.

As a father of teenage children I can't imagine what people like her and Trevor Hicks (who lost both daughters) felt and still feel today. I was 21 at the time and even as a fat middle-aged man feel sadness and anger over that day.

I was on the north bank and my mate's brother had his radio and was saying there was some kind of trouble at Sheffield as the first reports were filtering through.

My ex brother-in-law was on the terrace. They sensed problems and moved to the sides. We watched it unfold not knowing if they were ok or not. It was hours before they could get to a phone to tell us they were safe. Truly dreadful.

I didn't go the Swans match that day and remember watching it unfold on Grandstand in utter disbelief and horror.
Every time I see any tributes or tv clips about it, it makes me angry and upset for those who lost their lives and their families.

I was on the east terrace that day, my mate had a radio and at first he was laughing about how Liverpool fans were on the pitch causing a riot.

Then it became obvious somthing wasn't right.

Yes that was worst because I watched that live in my grans house and I was only nine.

Both horrific and unnecessary, as indeed was Heysel. Poor infrastructure and governance throughout the game then. One has at least improved.
